The Blacklist Renewed for Season 9
Raymond Reddington isn’t hanging up his fedora just yet. NBC’s crime drama The Blacklist has been renewed for a ninth season, the network announced Tuesday.
Across this season’s first three episodes (which spanned a nine-week holiday break!), The Blacklist is averaging 3.5 million total viewers and a 0.4 demo rating (in Live+Same Day numbers), down 19 and 28 percent from its Season 7 averages. With DVR playback and such factored in, however, NBC reports that the first two episodes amassed a 1.2 demo rating.
During the Jan. 22 winter premiere, Megan Boone’s Liz attempted to kill James Spader’s Red by causing him to perish in an explosion, as revenge for Red murdering Liz’s mother, Katarina Rostova. But Liz’s plan went awry — and not only did she fail to kill Red, but she further damaged her relationships with colleagues at the FBI.
Thus, the upcoming Jan. 29 installment (8/7c) will put Liz herself at the top of Red’s titular list of criminals. (Red, meanwhile, is contending with some serious health issues that have now hospitalized him more than once.)
“Liz and Red are going to war,” executive producer John Eisendrath told TVLine after Katarina’s demise. “The death of Katarina makes Liz more resolute than ever about getting answers to questions she’s been asking for seven years. She’s willing to burn every bridge and cross every line in search of the truth. Her resolution, plus all she’s learned from Red over the years about thinking like a criminal, makes her one of Red’s most formidable adversaries.”

This show just keeps on ticking! I checked out after season 3, but amazing how it survives year after year. Is the quality still there, or should they announce a final season sooner than later?
The quality is still there, and I would watch Spader read a shopping list.
What happened to season 8? I see on google , there is mention on season 9 Love the show.!!!

Season 8 just came back Jan 22nd after a winter break after only three shows aired, I believe. As far as I know, there aren’t any other “breaks” but who really knows…

I totally agree! James Spader is a wonderful story teller. If you never watched Boston Legal back in the 1990s, look for it. Spader was in the same law firm as William Shatner(from Star Trek) They (the firm) were always getting really strange cases. Like the man who wanted to divorce his wife so he could marry his cow. One time he took a case against God. I can’t remember what that was about. Betty White would show up from time to time. Spader was at his peak with those shows. Do yourself a favor and find those old seasons of Boston Law.

Totally agree. Liz is annoying and the storyline is so unbelievable that if it weren’t for Mr Spader (and Dembe), I wouldn’t be watching any more. I love the idea of James Spader doing audio books. He could read his shopping list and I’d be hanging on to every word. I love him in everything he’s been in. But I think it should end or write better scripts which concentrate on Red & Dembe more than moaning Liz. She’s so stupid she didn’t know her husband wasn’t what he seemed and the silly woman married him again after he tried to kill her! She will never be forgiven for causing Red to go to jail and minutes away from being executed. Bad Liz. More of Red in season 9 please. Does anybody know how we can get Mr Spader to consider doing audio books? Who do I pester?
If you had to contend with Liz’s parents and godfather, you’d be a little annoying too. As for Jimmy? I see him playing Franklin of Springhill (look that up) – with blue contacts, thinning hair to replace receding, darker brows – but the same mischeiviousness enabling great good. He could also inhabit the great screenwriter Dalton.

The quality is definitely still there. I’m glad they’ve committed to a 9th season. That takes that question off the table at the end of the 8th.
i checked out after S3 as well. they teased the red/liz relationship for too long, i lost interest. based on these numbers, i’m not the only one. the quality hasn’t been there in years i imagine.
I guess NBC keeps renewing this low quality show.. ha…

Well Derek, sometimes the show is like foreplay. There is a long build up but the payoff comes in multiples. 😬
SPADER MAKES THE SHOW WORTH WATCHING. He is the master. I don’t care for Elizabeth’s roll. I hope they write some sense into her roll.

agreed. they used whoever was saying she was katarina as a patsyused the memory guy to impant memories of her being katarina and really red is her which is why is broke doms heart as he always said and said katarina AND red both have the m13 file.

To be honest, getting tired of reading that ridiculous suggestion. REALLY! I love this show from the moment it was aired until now. Except for the odd plots at times. I love the character of Samar. Kaplan’s relationship with Liz as a child was very intriguing. Tom’s past could have been explored even more. Never liked the idea of Liz and Ressler together.

And, why was the DA Sima hell-bent on burning the Taskforce along with Reddington? Was he working for Ana McMann (may she burn in Hell)?

I think that may be the problem. At this point I don’t think they have any idea where to go with this so they just keep going and going and going. There is no way the pay off will be good at this point. They’ve let it go to long. Time to cut the cord.
They should have the husband (Tom? liked it when he was on board) still be alive and tie it up with threads to and through him. That would be fun.
I’d totally watch a 2 hour episode on that! Tom was a far more compelling character than Liz.

The difficulty with the Liz character is that Megan Boone is an awful actress. She is the female version of Scott Bacula (NCIS New Orleans).
Cannot change now, too far into the show, but James Spader may be the best actor to have appeared on televison.
Agreed on Spader. Completely disagree on Boone. Don’t know how you can even justify that assessment, but to each his own I suppose. Especially awesome scene for her was when she was interrogating Tom while he was handcuffed or zip tied to their dining room chair. Many other awesome performances as well.

I have loved the show, but it’s time to end it. Years of waiting for all the answers Liz needs and it feels like we’re no closer to ever having them. I might have stayed thru season 8 to see all scenarios answered, but after hearing it’s going to be around for another season? I’m done. I don’t care what happens to any of them anymore.
Where is this show going? Another year of Liz going after Red? Come on now, this is just getting boring and I loved this show at the start.
I completely agree. I have watched this show from the beginning and was really hoping this season would be the last. This is not the first time the two of them have “gone to war” and when a show starts to repeat major storylines, it is a sign that it needs to end. I’m honestly not sure if I am going to keep watching or not.
We have watched this site from the beginning and loved it. Not so anymore. After last week’s episode my husband and I both said we would be fine not watching it anymore. Same old, same old. Redington’s character always had enough humor that it would crack us up. There isn’t even a chuckle anymore. Plus, Liz’s character has gotten so dark. We’re done.

I don’t. I stopped. My problem is that I really liked the show when it started, and got invested in it. But after several years, it got to the point where the show seemed (to me) to be spinning its wheels and just started repeating itself. It got to be a chore to watch, so I stopped. However, I still want answers to the questions the show started asking in the very 1st season. And they haven’t really answered any of them. At this point, they probably won’t until the final episode or two. So I (selfishly) want the show to end so they’ll answer these questions. But I guess others still like the show, so they renew it again and delay answering any questions for another year or two.
One of the major questions was answered on the Feb 19 show. But it left even more questions to be answered. I’ll be watching it to the end. Spader is great. I’ve been following his career since Manaquin. He was the best character in it.
As much as I have enjoyed the show, I was ready for the big answer and the ending. I will continue to watch, but it’s really time to get this over with.
Why ? Original way of show hunting serious criminals………………………………was Great ! Now, not so much. Liz & Red’s tiff. Who CARES !!!!

Shocking. I would think the cost to produce after this long of a run, diminishing ratings, dimmed reviews and NBC strong slate of shows would have worked against another renewal.
The thing blacklist has going is that it’s a Friday show rating expectations are lower on Friday and nbc doesn’t have anything else to place Friday. I wouldn’t be surprised though if over the summer nbc announce it will be a final season o think after 9 seasons they would announce a final season before cancelling it to allow for a proper send off and a chance to close storylines and give viewers a satisfying ending
NBC needs content for Peacock. I’m sure that was taken into account also. They can’t rely solely on The Office and WWE content.
But NBC doesn’t own the Blacklist. It’s produced by (I think) Sony, which means that there’s no guarantee it’ll end up on Peacock
it does end up on peacock, but that’s one of the few new tv shows that netflix can offer people to watch if they’d rather just binge watch a season, as netflix paid a boatload of money to have the rights
The current season is airing on Peacock so, I would assume that next season will do the same. At least while it is the current season. So, it’s still content for them. If they can kill two birds with one stone, have a fairly consistent Friday night show and have a little content for their streaming service, then why wouldn’t they?
A few years back, the show creator/showrunner sold some of his ownership of the show to NBC which has helped keep the show on the air. So NBC profits more and has more stake in it now than they did initially. Sony still produces.
How many episodes will we have this current season?
At the rate they’re going, there will be four episodes to this season. There are so many breaks in between that I’ve forgotten anything that has come before. I used to love this show, but I barely think about it now.

Because Liz is the antagonist to Red’s protagonist. It was always leading to this.
I am ecstatic about season 9! I am a huge Blacklist fan! We have all seasons on dvd and are so excited to be watching Season 8 on tv. Sure wish I could meet James Spader! I like all of the cast, but he is by far my favorite!!!!!!

i never heard of blacklist until 3 weeks ago,i have now watched every episode up to episode6 in season 8 in just under 2 wks,i think its brilliant

Spader brings you back every week. Yes, sometimes hard to follow the story with all the breaks, and i do miss the week to week longer seasons, but he does such a great job. And his laugh! Seriously, it still has some answers to reveal, but has done some revealing along the way too. Liz is a little too much this season, thankfully Red is still there.
I do not see how some here are saying the show is boring! Liz wasn’t one the show this past week and it was very interesting! If you do not like the show now, then do not watch and keep your opinion to yourself…. ok?
I owned NBC in a prvious life and i’m actually not dead yet. Liz’s prolem with Ray is a kind of teen rebellion thing. We’ll have her get over it,.
We stopped watching 2 seasons ago. It just no longer interested us.
Don’t get me wrong, I love The Blacklist and will continue to watch until the final episode but I’m quite surprised it got renewed. They (the writers) have been stringing us along for a couple of seasons now.
They need to give us answers and end it. Boone is terrible as a “bad guy” doesn’t sell it at all, don’t want this to play out over another year. I just want answers, I’ve overinvested in this show
