A trio of fan favorites from Star Trek: Discovery are boldly going towards their own series.
CBS All Access has ordered Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, a spinoff with stars Anson Mount, Ethan Peck and Rebecca Romijn reprising their Discovery roles as Captain Pike, Spock and Number One, TVLine has learned. The series will follow the trio “in the decade before Captain Kirk boarded the U.S.S. Enterprise, as they explore new worlds around the galaxy,” per the official description.
Discovery and Star Trek: Picard executive producer Akiva Goldsman will pen the series premiere from a story by him and his Discovery and Picard colleagues Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet. Strange New Worlds becomes the fifth Trek series at CBS All Access, following Discovery, Picard, upcoming animated offshoot Star Trek: Lower Decks and a spinoff starring Michelle Yeoh as Discovery‘s Philippa Georgiou that is currently in development.
Mount (Hell on Wheels), Peck (Penny Dreadful: City of Angels) and Romijn (Ugly Betty) debuted as Pike, Spock and Number One on Season 2 of Discovery, which aired last year on CBS All Access. (All three characters were first introduced on the original 1966-69 Star Trek series.) Fans clamored for them to continue, but Season 2 ended with Burnham and the Discovery crew traveling a thousand years into the future and leaving the rest behind. (Season 3 of Discovery is set to premiere later this year.)
“Fans fell in love with Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn and Ethan Peck’s portrayals of these iconic characters when they were first introduced on Star Trek: Discovery last season,” CBS All Access executive vice president and head of programming Julie McNamara said in a statement. “This new series will be a perfect complement to the franchise, bringing a whole new perspective and series of adventures to Star Trek.”
Watch an announcement from the cast below, and then hit the comments to share your thoughts on the big Trek news:
yesss!!! i was just thinking about this again the other day, wondering if maybe they weren’t gonna go ahead with the spin-off after all. this makes me so happy!
Ehhhh, hopefully it’s better than Discovery. No more massive story arcs, gives us stand alone episodes.
I wouldn’t mind a mix but keep in mind, streaming is not broadcast. With broadcast, they just want you to watch whenever, and watch the ads, which is how they make money. So they did episodic shows so as not to dissuade you from ad watching because you are behind and don’t want to catch up.
But streaming is about subscriptions and to keep people from cancelling, they need to hook them into a storyline. Streaming is always going to be more serialized than broadcast because of this. It’s just the business model.
No! I want some story arcs, stand alone series get boring and fast.
So will this take place before or after the events of Disco season 2… How much time is even left before Kirk takes over for Pike… That said I loved Pike and Spock.. Number one seemed competent… But didn’t exactly leave a huge impression one way or another… I feel this series will be Loose when it comes to overall story arc and a tad more episodic which I’m good with…
Likely after, and there’s about 10 years before Kirk takes command.
Hell yes! More Star Trek! And with my three faves!? Well actually Spock.
Shall always be my fave..any portrayer of that character is my fave! Woohoo! ❤️❤️🖖🖖🖖
Best TV news of 2020 so far. They were SOOOOO GOOOD on Discovery. I’m looking forward to the big changes on Discovery, of course, and Picard turned out to be as great as I thought it would be (certainly it was the best TNG movie ever). But I’m really, really interested in seeing some TOS-style Trek.
I’m actually really excited about this!! Loved Pike, Spock and Number One.
Yes deserve. I love them 3 on Discovery
Yes!! I will totally watch this!
This has made 2020 a little bit less of a terrible year. After all the misery and tragedy, this is exactly what the world needs. But don’t make it dark, please. Just make it great, hopeful sci-fi with the brilliant cast we loved in Discovery.
I can’t wait.
In an announcement video on CBS All Access’s Facebook page (and I imagine other social channels) has them literally saying it will have a positive outlook.
Oh all right, maybe this will make me finally check out CBS All Access. With three Star Trek series going, there will finally be enough content to keep me happy for a month. Then if they want to keep me for another month, well I’ll check out what else they got….
I love the fact that the fans are the ones who came up with the name Strange New Worlds when speculating on the possibility of a spinoff and it stuck.
This makes me insanely happy.
All three were SO good on ST:Discovery
Why are so many of these in the past of Trek? I know DISCO is going to the future for S3, but I assume they’ll return to their time because of temporal time line stuff established in VOY.
Don’t get me wrong I’ll sign up for Michelle Yeoh as Discovery‘s Philippa Georgiou in a second when it’s ready.
It’s a thing almost all sci-fi franchise do for some reason. Stargate has Origins: Catherine, Star Wars has the Kenobi and Cassian Andor TV series and the High Republic initiative, Doctor Who is doing refurb on its foundations, etc. etc.
Well Discovery is now in the future.. and Picard is i guess also
This is the absolute best news to hit the Star Trek universe in years! So happy!
(…and showrunners, please make it lighter than Star Trek: Picard. That was a dark drugery of a disappointment.)
Oh, yes! Oh, yes! Can’t wait for Strange New Worlds…would follow them anywhere!
This is the best news of all of 2020 right here. Seriously. Okay, so 2020 makes for a low bar, but still, I am SO. HAPPY.
Yeah, 2020… the lowest bar (other than the last election year ever. But absolutely amazing news!
Bring it on!!! I’ll watch ever single Star Trek series’ that comes out. And they can rename CBS All Access to Star Trek Universe (or S.T.U.) while they’re at it😂
I am a little mixed on this because there will be a certain lack of suspense as there’s only so much you can do with the time period or with Spock and Pike’s history. But the new Star Trek TV-verse needs a classic style exploration series and this should be it, plus the three leads have already proven themselves.
It’s not like the Enterprise was ever going to be destroyed on TV no matter what happened. The only characters we know what becomes of them are Pike and Spock who likely would never die on TV either. There’s loads they can do with the rest of the cast. I just hope it’s not depressing and miserable like Discovery and Picard. We need some optimism in these times.
I’m not sure how much the (few) rules matter. We’re always assured that the care characters won’t get redshirted. If they follow the TOS line, we know how Pike and Spock end up, and of they go 2009 movieverse, we know Pick, Number One, and Spoke are fine. The Enterprise doesn’t get destroyed (like it does in every movie… pfft). Other than that, there are no real limits. Are you telling me that you don’t want to know anything about the Andorrans, Tellurites, and the other hundred or so cultures of the Federation? That there isn’t enough adventure in the entire Alpha Quadrant?
This is awesome news.
Great news. Except for Akiva Goldsman writing it. No offense to the guy. But all Trek shows take about a season or two to actually get good. He has this tendency to write darker material. But making something dark doesn’t make it good. I just wish they’d put this stuff on regular CBS. So it would have more episodes/time to figure itself out.
In the article you credit Romijn with Ugly Betty? I don’t even remember her on that. You know she is better known for the X-Men and probably even The Librarians?
And she is a brunette in this?
The character she plays was a brunette on the original Star Trek.
That’s right – Thanks for the reminder. It didn’t occur to me as I wrote. I don’t think I ever saw her as other than blonde in anything, so that partly stuck in my head.
I really tried to like Discovery but gave up watching about a third of the way through season 2. The only reason I hung in that long was because of the Pike and Spock characters, and Number One to a lesser degree. I’ll definitely give Strange New Worlds a try, but won’t miss Discovery for a second.
Not gonna hold my breath. CBS All Access is going under. Netflix and Amazon didn’t seem thrilled with their investments in STD and Picard. Merchandising isn’t anywhere near where it should be for these new Trek shows. And the writing of these shows have alienated a lot of Trek fans. Pike and Number One were stand-out characters (on a series with few memorable characters at all), but I could do without new Spock.
Please pay no attention to well known liars like Midnight’s Edge and Doomcock. They’re the Alex Joneses of fandom.
It isn’t a conspiracy theory to say that CBS All Access is struggling. That is just fact. It’s also fact that Netflix passed on Picard. Why would they pass if Discovery was performing well? Especially with the Picard name attached. The merchandising issues are also observable. I grew up on a steady diet of Star Trek merch. It isn’t anywhere near where it should be, especially since people today probably tend to buy more merch than before in general.
None of what I said touches on the gossip or rumors, just observable facts. Not even much of my opinions in regards to New Trek. Feel free to prove me wrong if other facts exist that I’m unaware of.
WOOT! I said I’d be all in for a “Pike’s Enterprise” series, and I am!
The true revenge of the nerds! I was 9 when the original series premiered. My friends and I loved the show, even if we didn’t always understand or appreciate it’s more adult aspects. Our parents thought us silly. For years there were snide comments by some schoolmates. So many jokes about “trekies”. But look at legacy of StarTrek 54 years later.. Wow!
YES!!! YES!!! YES!!! YES!!! YES!!! YES!!! YES!!! YES!!! YES!!! YES!!! YES!!! YES!!! YES!!! YES!!! YES!!! YES!!! YES!!! YES!!! YES!!! YES!!! YES!!! YES!!! YES!!! YES!!! YES!!! YES!!! YES!!! YES!!! YES!!! YES!!! YES!!! YES!!! YES!!! YES!!! YES!!! YES!!!
Definitely the most anticipated new show coming up, by far! Anson Mount is GREAT!
