UPDATE: The words “series finale” in a promo for next week’s batch of Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin episodes had everyone — including Team TVLine — wondering if this was really the end of the road for Imogen and her fellow PLLs.
But TVLine has learned that the use of “series finale” was merely a copy error, and the finale is only being considered the end of Season 1. No decision has been made about future seasons of the HBO Max drama.
ORIGINAL STORY BELOW:
Immediately following Episode 7, which is now available to stream on HBO Max, viewers were treated to the usual promo for the next batch of episodes. What they were not expecting to see, however, were the words “series finale.” Yet there they were, written in blood:
An offshoot of the franchise previously seen on ABC Family and Freeform, HBO Max’s PLL: Original Sin follows a new generation of Liars — Imogen (Bailee Madison), Tabby (Chandler Kinney), Faran (Zaria), Noa (Maia Reficco) and Mouse (Malia Pyles) — in the Rosewood-adjacent town of Millwood, Pa. And in typical Pretty Little Liars fashion, the seemingly quaint small town is quickly turned upside down by the arrival of a menacing, text-happy stalker intent on making these new girls pay for their mothers’… original sin.
The final three episodes of the season drop on HBO Max next Thursday, Aug. 18. How are you feeling ahead of next week’s Original Sin finale? Drop your own thoughts in a comment below.
If they get a new season the will just come back with another name. They can’t name it original sin anymore if there will be closure at the end of episode 10. This doesn’t mean, that there couldn’t be a new mystery.
That’s a really good point. “Second Sin” or “Another Sin” could be good.
OOO! OOO! or “Here We Sin Again” swapping out “go” for “sin” ahahah.. I’m a genius.
I wouldn’t mind, especially if the ending is semi closed. The original PLL is still my favorite (I do think it had slightly better actors and the chemistry between the leads was a bit better), but the story got a bit ludicrous because they kept changing the identity of A. Would be nice to have the identity of A within the first season for a change. Without any crazy twists, so they would have to come up with more A’s.
Very disappointing because I’ve loved this spinoff of PLL, unlike the previous ones. However, if it just means there would be a new spinoff version with a different story that’s just as good as this one, that would be fine.
Copy error it wasn’t canceled
their decision or Warner Discovery decision?
Copy error decision in the promo —it was supposed to read Season finale.
No I don’t want it to be the end it’s just now getting really good!!
Oh c’mon…
David Zaslav is the real serial killer. There, I solved it.
Ha! I can see it now! Terror grips the hearts of directors, casts and crews as they realize there is a mysterious masked Phantom of the Opera-esque Slasher let loose killing projects. But when the face of the Slasher is revealed it is not the menacing intimidating visage expected but rather the face of a guy who looks like the friendly neighborhood softball coach!
They better not cancel this show. I’m not sure how a “copy error” happened. Maybe they were people ready for what they thought Zaslav was going to say a few days ago.
Either way. THEY BETTER NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT CANCELING IT.
Because internationally like in the UK, “series” actually means season. So it IS the “series finale” if you go by that, but not the “show finale”.
I do not buy that this was an error, so many people so these things before they are uploaded to streamers. Since HBO Max is moving all programing under HBO, I cannot see a path forward for shows like PLL or Gossip Girl since they dont fit the HBO brand. Its really unfortunate, HBO Max content is more fun and less up tight.
It is very likely just an international version of the episode and most other countries call seasons “series” so it’s the accurate wording outside the US
I really hope you are wrong, but you make good points. They even said they saw their scripted programming as “male skewed”. Unfortunately I don’t think Pretty Little Liars or Gossip Girl fir it into that category. It’s a shame because they’ve both been enjoyable, but particularly Original Sin. I would love to see these characters grow and develop over a couple of seasons. I really hope they reconsider and keep it going.
I’d say there’s a 99% chance it’s canceled and the error is us finding out so soon.
Exactly my thought
A copy error? Lol, please, that is bs and we all know it. Stuff like that goes through so many people and so many hands before it gets uploaded to HBO Max. The only error was that it was seen before they officially announced it. Lol I don’t buy that for a second.
I wouldn’t mind. I am a fan of the original PLL, there was more chemistry with the actors. With this series I find it hard to tell the characters a part outside of the Imogen. I would love for them to get another season to get some things that were done wrong this season right next season. I like something like “here we go again” as a title card.
Isnt everything supposed to end on HBO MAX with the new deal? Still angry over that and i hope they will transfer over shows like this and Hacks.
Fake rumor. –Mgmt.
Degrassi better show up next year
As someone who watches and loves British TV – I’m wondering if whoever wrote the copy is more familiar with UK terms. They call a season a series over there.
The dumpster fire that is WBD didn’t have them listed as a core franchise (or whatever they called their favored IPs) when they presented to investors recently. And at the rate WBD’s been cancelling any and everything that has even a whiff of a diverse cast, I just hope everyone involved in Original Sin has seen the writing on the wall and updated their resumes.
Because it is not. It was one basic cable successful show followed by two spin-offs with crappy ratings. But this doesn’t mean this show doesn’t have good ratings for HBO Max (and much better reviews than the original show)
The show ISNT cancelled. They made a mistake. It hasn’t been renewed but it hasn’t been cancelled. The ‘series finale’ in the promo was a copy error. https://twitter.com/tvline/status/1557757425087913984?s=21&t=OQGrlSTEK7TSQyjLx1Cgcw
Phew. I binged the first five last week and love it. I have never seen any of the other PLL but wanted to try this one because of the horror angle. It’s so much fun. I really hope it continues.
I really they continue this series give some people a chance to get to watch it I’m sure it’s going to get more interesting I love this show come on season 2
