The new tight 10 is a firm five (seasons): The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel will end its Emmy-winning run after its upcoming — and just-ordered — fifth season. [pmc_inline_gallery]
The renewal/end date announcement comes just hours before Amy Sherman-Palladino’s dramedy about the titular 1950s stand-up comedienne kicks off its penultimate fourth season on Prime Video (the first two episodes drop Friday).
“Amy, Dan [Palladino, executive producer], and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel have blazed an unparalleled path, elevating the stories we tell about women, challenging the norms in our industry, and forever altering the entertainment landscape with their one-of-a-kind storytelling,” Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios, said in a statement. “The dozens of awards cement Maisel’s legacy in many ways, but what’s even more enduring and poignant are the characters Amy created and the joyous, brilliant, singular world she and Dan brought to life.
“This series has meant so much to Prime Video and the effects of its success will be felt long after its final season,” the exec continued. “I can’t wait for fans and our worldwide Prime Video audience to savor each moment as we embark on the culmination of this groundbreaking and unforgettable series.”
Production on Maisel‘s fifth and final season is currently underway in New York.
In a 2020 Q&A, Sherman-Palladino weighed in on the series’ eventual endgame. “We don’t want don’t want to overstay our welcome,” she maintained. “Midge has a journey she has to take. It’s the struggle that is fun [as opposed to] ‘I’m sitting in a penthouse and I’m really rich and I’ve got a lot of chihuahuas.’ We know emotionally where we want to end her and at what point we want to cut it off, we just don’t know how many episodes it’s going to take to get there.”

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
It’s nice to know that they’ll know it’s the final season far in advance so they can plan for a great ending. Of course it’s a great show (will miss it), but better to end it on a high note than to risk stretching the story too much. Now we can all remember the show for what it was/is: one hell of a story!
You’re absolutely correct and I totally agree with you after my initial response above. There are so few quality shows these days that I love but I’m glad they will be able to write S5 as a final season.
Totally agree. Always leave them wanting more, as they say. How many tv shows or movie sequels have we watched where we wished they would’ve stopped sooner? I’m loving this trend of 4/5 seasons and it’s done.
Nooooo
This was one of my favourites on television at the moment. I don’t want to see it end so soon. I was not expecting these news today.
I was. This is SOP for streaming services. They will end shows after 5 seasons, because that is when contracts expire. Union rules in the entertainment industry stipulate 5 years for all regular acting roles on tv shows (streaming included). After that, the producers have to renegotiate, and Brosnahan would command a FORTUNE. Ergo, the streaming service had no intention of letting this go more than 5 years.
Interesting choice of words, TVLine usually writes – and insists – that shows with this scenario are “cancelled”, but not the almighty Mrs. Maisel. Ugh.
This is absolutely… not true? What are you talking about
It’s not a cancellation if it’s an ending chosen and decided by a show’s creators.
B is right that, more often than not, TVLine includes shows that are ending, whether the announced reason is that the network/platform, the studio/production company, or the people actually creating the show are the party ending it. Not always. Not in all articles. But on scorecards and lists as well as in some articles, they get thrown in with the shows being cut because of ratings, quality, or costs. The breaking story article like this one will use the word “ending,” but others here may not. Of course, we don’t always know the real story. Here, it would not surprise me if the Palladinos knew from the start, or soon thereafter, that this was a five-season show, or at least made certain they could control its end, unlike GG. But, we don’t know for certain. For those of us who have been following TV since the 70s and 80s, we never heard the word “canceled” when shows like M*A*S*H or the Mary Tyler Moore Show ended, so it will always sound disconcerting when applied to shows that the producers, rather than the network or the studio, decided to end. Cancelation is (or at least was) a term that applied only to shows where the network either had the option to renew at set price and decided not to or needed to come to a new agreement with the studio to renew it and failed to do so.
It’s so crazy to me that this will be the first show that Amy and Dan get to end themselves.
They got their intended ending for Gilmore Girls with the revival years later and Bunheads was cancelled after it’s first season. I’m eager to see what masterpiece they’re gonna cook up for Maisel!
As much as I love this show, I think this is a good move. Go out on a high note!
I am also super excited to see what Dan and Amy do next. And, while I know it is not going to happen, I would love to see them revisit Bunheads. A great show that ended way too early!
I’m sad that this story will end, however, I understand why.
It is a masterpiece of the small screen. Well done!
I’m glad that they’re putting a cap on it. Gilmore Girls went on at least two, if not three seasons too long. And I LOVE Gilmore Girls. But its best years were not its final ones.
Just book Lauren Graham for something.
Can we get back to Gilmore Girls after this ends? I’m sure all the cast would return and the miniseries was left on a cliffhanger. We need resolution and closure. Also, Rory is in desperate need of some redemption arc because her character was absolute garbage in the revival.
Have they announced how many episodes Season 5 will be? I guess Lenny Bruce will still be alive when the show ends.
In the previous article promoting Season 4 TVLINE asked about a Season 5 and said there was no word yet and now, a few days late,r TVLINE says they have already started filming Season 5. I guess they knew more than they could say in the earlier article.
10, according to the first line of the article.
Nooooooooooooo 😳😢😢
I absolutely love this show and I have been impatiently waiting for it to come back! Now you tell me this is the end!!! Noooooo
Awe, that’s a bummer. If they end it good I might be ok with it. :(
Are you kidding. It’s the best 👌 show I’ve ever seen. I have followed every season since d
I SO MUCH enjoy MRS. Maisel! Every character is smart, a hit, perfectly fitting, and every scene is wonderful. Some critic gave this Season a bad review, and after watching both episodes, HE IS WAY WRONG. Both episodes are very good, and for where everyone is in their lives at this point, it’s plausible. GREAT SHOW!!! Okay, they’re going to close out after the 5th Season. Glad they gave us advanced notice, to prepare my mind and heart. I’ll miss them all. But I’ll rewatch every season time and again. As I’ve been doing. As far as the ending… I’d like to see Midge and her ex husband come back together, and for them to have their own entertainment club, after she has a run with it, gets it out of her system, and she could write for other’s, have a talk show, something, get to know and raise her kids. I’d like to see them have the best of all their worlds, come to grips with it, settle in, and her parent’s to land back on their feet. With their strong support system, and the love they have for each other. They can find their way to express their creative selves, and Midge is smart enough to reach a peak of respecting other’s & still being funny, and still be herself.
I’m not one to want more seasons of any series, most of the time, and a very American trend, but this is one of those rare instances where I would not mind watching Midge grow into further maturity and even middle age. Great show.
This is finally the best show on tv. Every cast member is great.
I can’t tell you how much I look forward to every show.
I too want more
We do so enjoy watching this show and are very disappointed it has to end. But everything that is good must end. She should end her last show at Carnegie Hall on top of the world.
Going to miss this show so much. The final will be like the novel one never wants to end. The story, cast, time period, all just mesmerizing. Sure hope the last season gives us diehards a great feeling.
The acting, the amazing period re-creation, the wonderful jokes, the visual treat in every way, with the beauty of Mrs. Maisel at the center, all come together for a compelling tour de force. Even the look-alike Lenny Bruce is brilliant, and even touching in the scene at Madison Square Garden. And my husband loved the strippers! What is not to like? Or rather, to love!
OOPS Carnegie Hall.
