CBS likes what it’s seen so far from its crop of freshman series: The Eye network has renewed dramas Magnum P.I. and FBI and comedy The Neighborhood for a second season, TVLine has learned.
“Each of these distinctive shows has made their mark in a variety of ways,” CBS entertainment president Kelly Kahl said in a statement. “Our goals this season were to introduce new series that audiences are passionate about, add more strength to a winning schedule and create more inclusive programming.”
Magnum P.I. — a reboot of the ’80s Tom Selleck hit — stars Jay Hernandez as the titular private eye, a former Navy SEAL who uses his skills to solve cases in sunny Hawaii. The supporting cast includes Perdita Weeks, Zachary Knighton, Stephen Hill and Tim Kang. Averaging 5.9 million total viewers and a 0.9 demo rating (live + same day) deep into its 20-episode season, Magnum ranks 10th out of CBS’ 14 dramas in total audience and ties for fifth in the demo.
FBI, from Law & Order franchise boss Dick Wolf, centers on the New York field office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with Missy Peregrym starring as Special Agent Maggie Bell. She’s joined in the ensemble by Zeeko Zaki, Jeremy Sisto, Ebonée Noel and Sela Ward. CBS’ biggest freshman hit, FBI is averaging 9.3 million viewers and a 1.1 rating thus far, ranking second in both measures among all the network’s dramas.
The Neighborhood stars Cedric the Entertainer as a gruff African-American dad who gets surprising new neighbors: white couple Dave (Max Greenfield) and Gemma (Beth Behrs). The supporting cast includes Tichina Arnold, Sheaun McKinney and Marcel Spears. Averaging 6.4 mil and a 1.1, The Neighborhood ranks No. 5 among CBS sitcoms (behind Big Bang‘s farewell season, Young Sheldon, Mom and not-fully-tested midseason launch Fam).
The renewals leave the Murphy Brown revival, comedy Happy Together and drama God Friended Me as the only CBS fall freshmen whose Season 2 fate is still in limbo. TVLine’s Renewal Scorecard has been updated with the news.
Magnum is a bit of a surprise… I’m still shocked they haven’t done a Hawaii 5-0 cross-over yet
they will, maybe not this season
The producers had initially said they would do one in the back-end of this season but haven’t heard anything yet. With them getting a 2nd season, they may now do it.
I’m a bit surprised at Magnum as well considering it’s weak ratings.
They did have a bit of a crossover with some supporting staff like the coroner. But it’s likely they want to make it an event crossover for sake of ratings.
It is a surprise. I’m thinking Swat is definitely cancelled then. Of course this could mean they are waiting to see how the Michael Weatherly Bull thing goes down, and then Seal Team is also pretty low. Madam Secretary probably moves to summer, and NCIS NO will probably go to Sundays.
İ have no problem with S.w.a.t being cancelled but i love Bull and Seal Team. İ will really get upset if they cancelled them. İ thing Bull’s ratings going well.
I love Bull and I’m hoping they don’t cancel it over a bunch of crap!! It’s such a great show and Michael Weatherly is so good in it, as are all the cast!!
Swat is so-so to me! I LOVE BULL and they better not cancel it over some stupid crap!! Michael Weatherly and the whole cast are great! I really like Seal Team and hope it gets a renewal too. If NCIS:NO goes to Sundays, it’s doomed. Madam Secretary is just ok!
Noelani’s been in two or three eps, and Kamekona’s been in a couple of eps, and they’ve mentioned Five-0 a couple of times. So while there hasn’t been a full-on crossover two-parter or whatnot, they definitely have had some.
I’m sure it is coming. They have already establised the two shows share the same universe with Kamekona apearing in a couple of espisodes
Happy Together is the only one of these I kept watching. That pretty much guarantees it will be cancelled.
I like that show. It just needs better writing. The talent on there is amazing. Hopefully they get renewed. Happy about the neighborhood and magnum p.i.
IS MAGNUM PI COMING BACK I LIKE TO KNOW THE DATE MY KIDS ARE VERY SAD ABOUT IT PLEASE LET US KNOW, THANK YOU
Magnum promotes good principles, moral ethics, and in a corrupt society, we need good role models for viewing audiences,
I’ve never watched The Neighborhood but what I like about Magnum and FBI is that for the most part they are case of the week shows so you can miss an episode here and there. You can’t really do that with shows like AMLT, etc.
True, it is nt like the original but who else could be Tom Selick but it is fun to watch.
I watched the original Magnum and Tom Selleck is iconic. What I like about the reboot is they aren’t trying to copy Tom’s Magnum and letting Jay Hernandez be his own version Magnum. I also love that they went with a female Higgins. This adds a whole other level to their characters’ chemistry.
I am enjoying that this Higgins has so much more going for her and she gets in on the action where as when I watched the original Higgins was just at the estate with the giant dogs. You never really saw him out in the field and helping. Its a nice dynamic
I agree about Higgy. The sexual tension between her in Magnum is a great added dimension. I find I’m really starting to like this show.
I’m going to say now what I said about the original.
When Higgins and Magnum start doing it I’m done.
Not surprised about FBI or The Neighborhood, but I really didn’t think Magnum would be renewed. H50 is basically getting the same demo rating with a couple million more viewers on Friday nights–and it’s in its ninth season! Why would Magnum get renewed with worse ratings? Does it have some sort of lucrative Netflix deal (a la Dynasty)?
Because Hawaii 5-O is ending sometime soon, whether it comes back for another season. Monday is the biggest culprit to Magnum’s ratings I believe. They can easily put Hawaii, MacGyver and Magnum on Friday. Blue Blood is also not long on the schedule or they can move it or reduce it’s episodes.. So it totally fits CBS mode. Also keeps the studio they have developed in Hawaii working assuming Hawaii 5-O does come to the end. It is not the same as the original show and no one is Tom Selleck but Magnum is fun. So I totally see why it’s sticking…
Blue Bloods does great in syndication, it can still last several more seasons and absolutely no need to reduce its episodes or move. Peter Lenkov’s mediocre remakes (he can’t even create an original idea) should not take over Fridays. And fake Magnum got no boost at all this week in Monday’s regular slot that was part 2 of what aired after the AFC Championship. And this was with a stronger Monday lead-in than usual. Bull, which has had controversy this year because of Michael Weatherly, did better an hour later. Magnum is a massive failure and did not deserve renewal.
I do wish people would say “in my opinion”, instead of making proclamations like their word was gospel. I enjoy Magnum and it’s entertaining–IMO, tell me Ben–do you own CBS? If not, then it’s not up to you to call it a massive failure not deserving of renewal. Wow…..
I agree with everything you said, from enjoying Magnum to amazement that someone is so confident that his opinion is the only one that matters.
It took me a while to warm up to, but I really enjoyed the last few episodes and love the dynamic between Magnum & Higgins- she awesome! People who quit watching after just a couple of shows have missed out.
actually someone saying “in my opinion” is a bit not only unnecessary but confusing .. as if they would have someone else’s opinion ?
clearly you can disagree with their opinions
I hate Magnum but really like FBI, so the renewal of Magnum is a surprise. I Love BULL and all I know is that CBS Better renew it!! I also love Blue Bloods and hope it continues for many more seasons!!
The only show I like on Fridays is Blue Bloods!! It’s one of my favorite shows, so I hope it goes on for a long time!!
Well, like the article says, in the all important demo, its tied for 5th out CBS’S 14 dramas. So, by my math, it is in the top half of CBS dramas. It is also comes from the folks behind H50 and MacGyver.
Great!! I’m really liking Magnum and the FBI show is top notch.
I didnt like Murphy Brown S11 that much. Sure, it had a few laughs but it just seemed a bit outdated. Happy Together was mundane. I really hope God Friended Me will get a second season. it reminded me of the old TV show Early Edition but then in a more modern setting. FBI is amazing and so is Magnum. Never really watched The Neighborhood.
I love The Neighborhood!
Me, too. It is one of the five shows my husband likes.
I love it too !
Yay… I love the new Magnum. The leads have great chemistry.
I also enjoy The Neighborhood. I hope to catch up with FBI. I thought the first two eps moved slow, but hopefully the cast found its rhythm.
I agree. I am enjoying the new Magnum. I also wish people would stop comparing it to the original, and enjoy it for what it is meant to be, entertainment.
God Friended Me will definitely see S2. I’d be floored if it doesn’t get picked up. It’s doing well for a Sunday show.
I don’t know about that. It could still get renewed, but you would think the renewal would have come with these three shows.
I think they’ll probably wait to see how it does without a football lead-in before announcing any renewal, something they did similarly with Madame Secretary a few years back.
My Husband and I love God Friended Me so I really hope it gets a renewal.
Yes!!! I’m really enjoying FBI!! Glad it’s coming back.
Wow. Very early. Shame they seem insistent on messing up SEAL Team.
This is what I fear as well While I am not a fan Seal Team is pretty consistent for them but CBS apparently needs Magnum to work more which sadly wont. Moving it to Friday wont help If it cannot gain viewers after football what makes CBS think it will gain later? Stupid move CBS
Seal Team is excellent TV, I’ll be upset if they let it go since they’ve kept Magnum :-)
SEAL Team is great. I thought I read (here perhaps) that SEAL Team streams really well and has a following either via that platform, internationally, or both. I’m hoping that will save it.
Not surprising with criminal minds ending they would need a show with FBI agents as the focus. I tried to watch for Sela Ward but that main chick Maggie is just so off.
FBI and The Neighborhood are no surprises they are doing what CBS expects. But please tell me CBS WHAT!!! is Magnum doing for you? Not a whole lot. Unbelievable that they would renew this clunker who didn’t even retain a shred from its great Sunday numbers. Sadly I feel a CBS show that is doing much better( God Friended Me) will lose out to this shlock( And when I say much better GFM is on a terrible night and even without football does decent numbers Magnum on the other hand has a decent slot and is doing awful) Just stunning that CBS could be so stupid renewing Magnum
That is great news to hear about the renewals. Especially FBI , it is awesome I love Missy she is great.
I really laugh out loud at The Neighborhood. I surely hope God Friended me gets renewed. It’s one of my favorite shows.
I love the neighborhood… max greenfield who plays dave is the whitest character ever lol I like FBI as well
Magnum P.I. & FBI are really not worth it. kinda low mediocre. why would they do a new season. I watched FBI. but its not worth it. acting writing storyline. #There are better shows to keep alive for a next season
Because FBI does well in the ratings.
…as stated above.
I am so glad that Magnum PI is coming back for a second season. I really do like the show. It reminds of the original series that was on for many years and it was so good then as it is now. I just wish they would do a crossover with Hawaii Five-O. Hawaii Five-O did a crossover with NCIS: Los Angeles and MacGyver. Magnum PI and Hawaii Five-O are both in the same state, same island and connected to Hawaii Police Department and it would be awesome if Magnum PI and Hawaii Five-O have a crossover at least once.
God Friended Me better get renewed!!! One of the best new shows in a long time.
Yay! Magnum renewed! Didn’t think I’d like reboot, but hope it has a long run. Like it that much! Thanks
In my opinion, what really saves “The Neighborhood” are the guys who play Cedric the Entertainer’s two sons- those guys are scene stealers. Otherwise, it’s just Cedric making fun of white people, sort of a one-trick pony. Another surprise on the show is Beth Behrs, who I thought was awful on “Two Broke Girls”, but not as awful as Kat Dennings was (she SCREAMED her lines!), but Behrs has been pretty good this time. Anyway, the show is good for a few laughs so I was happy to see it get renewed.
Agree, Marty & Malcolm crack me up! Especially when they are hassling Calvin. Plus I am really enjoying Gemma & Tina’s friendship!
Those poo heads at cbs better renew God Friended Me!!!!!
Happy about the neighborhood FBI is perfect for CBS so it’s a perfect renewal but MI is really awful if they cancel God friended me for magnum that will be like the dumbest thing ever.
Really glad to hear Magnum was renewed. I know the ratings are not all that but I do enjoy it and love the Higgins character and the chemistry between her and Magnum and Jay Hernandez well he’s great to look at lol
The only one I have watched is FBI, I wasn’t really a big Magnum PI fan even with the original, and with The Neighborhood I’m just not into half hour comedies! I just wonder why CBS got FBI instead of NBC, seeing as Dick Wolf is the creator of all the Law & Order and Chicago shows, I would think NBC would have jumped at have another of his shows! Plus they could have tied it in with SVU and the Chicago shows too, do crossover events!
In any case I am happy it is doing well, hope it lasts for many seasons, so I won’t be as bothered by end of Criminal Minds next year! Though it will still hurt!
NBC was offered FBI first but passed on it.
