We’ve known it for months, and now the fictional American people of the Madam Secretary-verse know it, too: Elizabeth McCord officially is running for president.
Sunday’s Season 5 finale found Téa Leoni’s Elizabeth resigning as head of the State Department in order to launch her White House run. The campaign to be Commander in Chief would be the focus of a potential Season 6, though CBS has not yet renewed the political drama.
“We feel pretty good” about getting another season, executive producer Lori McCreary tells TVLine. “I think, certainly, our audience is rabid about wanting to see this through. When we started this show, many moons ago, we had the expectation that in its success we would be where we are, and we could push her into a presidential campaign. So we’re doing a lot of deep thought about what that might look like. We have some exciting things planned.”
McCreary and executive producer Barbara Hall let us in on what some of those developments might be and broke down the finale’s major beats (is Owen Callister’s run really over?), ramifications for the future (did you pay attention to that political party talk last week?) and biggest overall surprise (Stevie kissed whom?!). Read on for the highlights.
TVLINE | We’ve reached kind of critical mass with where Elizabeth has been headed for the past few years. What comes next? Are we going to be focused mainly on her campaign? Will we be in the State Department at all?
HALL | What we’d love to do is get her on the campaign trail. We’d love to do a primary and an election next season. We’ve always been about pulling back the curtain on the State Department and showing the process of diplomacy, so this is going to be pulling back the curtain on a campaign and everything that that involves.
TVLINE | In the penultimate episode this season, the show addressed political party affiliation in a way that hasn’t been done before: After seasons of not putting a fine point on with which party the Dalton administration and Elizabeth identified, we now know she is not Republican. What made now the time that you felt that it was time to start addressing these party lines? Do we have a strict definition of what party Elizabeth is with?
HALL | We thought that if we were going to do an election year, we couldn’t really avoid addressing the party system. What we really wanted to do, since Elizabeth is an independent and that’s the party she’s running on, is that we wanted to name all the parties. I’ve always said the mission statement for the show is a place people can go to talk about politics that isn’t so polarizing. We wanted to come at our election from the point of view of you’re going to get to hear everybody’s policy differences and different platforms as elections work in a thriving democracy. The only thing that we ruled out of our world is extremism. So we just wanted to show a three-party election system, and in order to do that, we decided we had to identify the parties.
MCCREARY | I think it’s possible to actually have discourse on real-life polarizing issues. Some real discourse that helps people understand all sides of the issue, which is hard to find these days. The reason they’re polarizing is they’re not easy-to-answer problems. But one of the things I love about what we can do in the show is help unpack those issues for people, like we did last season with NATO, and look at some more domestic issues in a way that helps people really understand why there are “sides.”
TVLINE | Talk to me a little bit about Sen. Owen Callister. We see in the finale that he’s suspending his campaign, but is there a possibility he will un-suspend next season?
MCCREARY | We haven’t dismissed it as a possibility. As we take on this approach to a campaign year, I want to feel like we can go wherever we need to go. It’s a whole different world, as I said. Again, with the three-party system, who knows what can happen? We’re not closing the door on anything.
TVLINE | The terrorist group Knights of Western Freedom don’t seem like they are going to go away, either. How much of a threat might they be as we move forward? How much they’re on Elizabeth’s mind as she leaves the State Department?
HALL | It will come back into the story, because we’re trying to address the global issue of nationalism, and I think that it’s going to be an issue for her in the campaign because it’s an issue in the world.
MCCREARY | The fun thing for our show can be, we know at a certain point the presidential candidates get read into some [national security intelligence] that they wouldn’t necessarily be read into, so she’ll be a little farther ahead that most of them…
TVLINE | So to go from the very serious to the very frothy: Blake and Stevie’s pairing was something I did not see coming! Tell me about the decision to pursue a deeper relationship between those two.
HALL | I think that’s the beginning of the deeper relationship, certainly a deeper friendship. I really feel like anything can happen. I feel like you’re going to be focused on interpersonal relationships in the campaign year because everybody’s going into these high pressure situations. It forces everyone to deepen their relationship, but we’ll see what happens with them. I feel like anything is possible.
What did you think of Madam Secretary‘s season finale? Grade the episode via the poll below, then hit the comments to back up your choice!
That would be a pretty cruel cancellation after last night’s ending. At least one more season to see her elected president is really all they need.
Very mixed. If she resigned, continuing the MS series seems moot. However, fans want resolution. Perhaps a campaign movie wrap up would be more appropriate and it could serve as a pilot for a possible spin off.
We’ve seen season-long Presidential campaigns before. Twice on West Wing along. I’d be just as happy with a timejump to Election Day or even Inauguration Day. Rename the show “Madame President” and continue from there.
along = alone
Yes, please! I totally agree – as much as I enjoy this show’s approach to our political system, I’m exhausted of real-life presidential elections.
I agree Dave! I enjoy the actors on this show and they should just start a new chapter. There would be so many story lines that would be new and interesting.

Oddly enough, I actually I thought about the possibility of Stevie and Blake, way back at the beginning of the series. And when we found out that he was Bi, I considered it again. They never had a lot of scenes together, so it was something I thought the show might have no interest in pursuing. Guess I was wrong.
I thought about a pairing with these two also. Not way back in the beginning but somewhere along the way I was wondering why they never put the two together. I will also prefer her w/Dmitri but we knew from the start that they were doomed.
I remember some point in season 1 thinking that they were going to pair them or that with their chemistry that they should. Kind of glad that they came back around to it. I’ve liked when they show more of Blake’s character outside of work, feels like he hasn’t been as focused on as the other characters until recently.
Same! I always thought Blake is a character that needs to be developed more. And him and Stevie just seems like such a balanced pair that the show should really put more focus on! It will be an interesting Season 6 with their romance blossoming! Also, would be nice to have Blake in the family knowing how much he respects and admires his “mother-in-law.” ;)
A great episode. Where is the poll?
Right below where the article ends, and above all these comment. (This is where they always are)
I am so keeping my fingers crossed for this show to be renewed. It is one of my very favorites.
AGREE 100 %
Hey was is tv line not showing us ratings can someone please tell me
It was a different article after this one. They are the live+same day only though.
So if the show comes back next season do we get a name change to “Madam Candidate?”
Crazy idea : why don’t we let MS show one more independent Presidential candidate win an election just to show Americans the possibility exists? Foster some independent thinkers for a change (no pun intended)?? So tired of the the winner being the one who raises the most money.
CBS should do a limited series run to refresh audience on this awesome series. Classic episodes, a season rundown, something to build up interest. Leaving to blow in the wind until September seems wrong.
The do… And they call it CBS ALL ACCESS. LOL
Although the ratings probably wouldnt warrant it, I think it would be interesting after season 6 to have the focus on the new secretary and make Bess a supporting character like Dalton
Tea is the star… Not going to happen…
Happened in the 7th season of the west wing. Would bring some fresh life into it.
This show has been sold around the world.. To dump it without its conclusion would not be smart.. I can see possibly a short season to finish up.. But who knows… We’ve seen other shows end like this.. Just not on CBS… They tend to give conclusions to long running shows..
The only long running show they’ve cancelled in a long time, without a curtain call season, was Scorpion. And that didn’t have as many years in as Madam Secretary does.
Surely we did get a resolution though. The shows Madam Secretary and by resigning thats the resolution to the show. While I would like another season it’s not like this isn’t a perfectly natural end of the show. A good ending to a show after all doesn’t have to wrap everything up, it can just fullfil the premise and leave it upto the audience to decide where the story goes after the premise is fulfiled
It was such an engrossing finale. We loved it! Please keep this show!!!
Completely agree !!
Knights Of Western Freedom. An international white nationalist group. Do the writers of Madame Secretary’s Progressive propaganda have an understanding of oxymoron?
I hope you’re right about the renewal. As far as watching the election? Please gods no. Maybe an episode or two but not a whole season. And then change the name of the series to Madam President.
Agreed, I’m so over campaigns and watching speeches and debates. Just put her in the White House with Henry and take it from there. Please!
Best show ever
Re the political party question: Dalton was Republican, but during the last election cycle, he did not get the Republican nomination, so ran as an Independent and won.
I need this show to remind me how our government should function. The three branches should respect each other’s raison d’etre, even if they totally disagree. The President does not abuse his power to do end runs around the law. Could we please renew Madam Secretary’s administration and cancel the current real-life one???
Amen to that.
AMEN !
Blake and Stevie? Ewwwww! .Now Stevie and Jay would be hot!
Because of the time changes created by innumerablesorts overruns making the program difficult to watch or record it is no wonder that this best program on TV has the ratings it does
Must be an east coast issue… We dont have overrun issues here on the west coast.
It would be awful to end the show where it is now, leaving Elizabeth announcing her run for the Presidency and never getting to see her do it. I have mentioned before that this is the BEST written drama on television! To see it evolve to this point has been incredible. The actors are just actors, but they are so good, you actually can believe they are the real government employees. Please give them at least one more season!
The last two episodes were incredible, inspiring, realistic. I find it heartening that Bess is second guessing herself even at the last minute before she resigns. It shows she is human, seeing all the tension it brings to her entire family. This is why showing the added burdens a woman who runs for pres has to bear. It also shows her strength.
I love the show and the family oriented SOS as well as a well grounded, knowledgeable President. Praying God will bring this county BACK to an Elizabeth McCord personality and POTUS.
I love this show and I’ve watched it from the beginning. I’d like to see Stevie fake her death and end up with her true love, the Russian defector. I thought they were awesome together.
