NBC is getting out of Indebted, cancelling the freshman family sitcom after one low-rated season, sources tell TVLine.
Across its 12-episode run, Indebted averaged a 0.35 demo rating and fewer than 1.6 million total viewers (in Live+Same Day numbers). Out of the seven sitcoms NBC aired this TV season, it ranked next-to-last in both measures, besting only the similarly cancelled freshman comedy Sunnyside. Debuting on NBC in February, Indebted wrapped up its freshman season with an April 16 season finale that will now serve as a series finale.
Adam Pally (Happy Endings) and Abby Elliott (SNL) starred as married couple Dave and Rebecca Klein, whose lives are turned upside down when Dave’s parents Debbie and Stew — played by The Nanny‘s Fran Drescher and Wings veteran Steven Weber — show up at their door broke and needing a place to live. Jessy Hodges (Barry) co-starred as Dave’s pet groomer sister Joanna.

Fellow NBC freshman Bluff City Law is also not returning next season, sources tell TVLine. The legal drama, starring Jimmy Smits and Caitlin McGee, wrapped production last fall after a 10-episode run.
TVLine’s Renewal Scorecard has been updated to reflected Indebted‘s demise. Will you miss the Klein family? Hit the comments below and share your reaction to the news.
Dang, was a good show. I liked it a lot, same with Man with Plan, Carol’s Second Act, etc. We need comedies!
Aw :( Glad you softened the blow with the Manifest news. This was better than Broke, but neither survived. Decent sitcoms seem to drop like flies these days.
Agree they dont give them a chance
This show, and Broke, were probably victims of the current situation. These shows were clever sendups of a “Good” economy. But they would, and indeed, will be, tone deaf once the full impact of the economic slowdown hits society. What was once funny, and worthy of mockery (losing all one’s money through mismanagement), will not be so amusing by next fall. This show might have survived without the pandemic and resulting economic slowdown.
.
Same with Carol. Comedies set in hospitals won’t be acceptable for a few years. Dramas at a hospital, sure. Especially if it is already a hit (Grey’s, Chicago, etc). But middling comedies (with an expensive cast) set in hospitals won’t survive. Hospitals aren’t funny right now, and won’t be for a few years. At least a few years. Possibly closer to a decade. Sure, some stand alone episodes set in hospitals will happen, but the hospital won’t be the prime setting for a comedy. If there were currently a successful comedy set at a hospital, currently in or very near reaching syndication riches, it would continue. But there isn’t one of those right now, so here we are.
Really sorry that “indebted” is canceled.
In my opinion it was a great, funny show and i enjoyed watching all of the cast.
i wish sitcoms would be given chances. 😔
I am so sorry that indebted has been canceled. We don’t have shows like this any longer they do not give them a chance and that is very sad.
Any intel on the pilots that were still being considered for the coming year? At That Age & Ordinary Joe among others?
Good. It was a terrible unfunny show. Fran deserved better
This.
The Nanny was her best by far. She should have stopped there. Her subsequent sitcoms (three, including the latest) and a talk show all tanked.
Now now, you can’t blame someone for wanting to keep working! :)
I agree The Nanny was the best, though I enjoyed Happily Divorce enough – more than I did Indebted, at any rate.
I agree, Happily Divorced was really funny, I got really upset when they canceled it.
There were 13 episodes. One episode did not air. Is there any plans to air this episode on television or on the website?
Only thing left on NBC is SVU, unless they give The Wall another season.
Saddening to hear for Fran Drescher is great, & should have a Great comedy sitcom! I don’t think it was given a fair shake–especially the time & night it was on. Yes, we definitely need comedy’s especially Now in today’s current climate of the world! Man with a Plan was another mistake to cancel as well! Matt Leblanc is great too!
I totally agree
I love Man with a plan, but i felt the last episodes kind of low energy, i didnt have a single outburst of laughter, different from previous seasons… However, i’m gonna miss it, we need to laugh more nowadays
Why??? This we a fun light show! Ans who doesn’t love Fran!! And Man with a plan. Bring them back!!! We need more fun in our libes! What’s the replacement..another news show? Ugh!!
It explains in the article that it had low ratings. That is why.
Bummer. It was a fun silly show. Fran D & Steven W put a smile on my face.
Such a great cast but storylines and writing weren’t up to par.
I hate to hear this, I really enjoyed this show and so funny and brought some reality into comedy shows. They should have given it more of a chance before they canceled it.
Love Fran Drescher, Steven Weber and Adam Pally, but this show wasn’t up to their tremendous talent. They deserve better writing, especially Fran, who I’ve adored since her Nanny days.
I love Fran Drescher, but I couldn’t stand watching the pilot! I got so frustrated after some minutes in front of tv… Better luck next time!
Sad to see this show is ending. It was funny with a great cast. It picked up momentum after the first few episodes. I wish more people would have given it a chance.
Have been watching The Nanny reruns late at night. Fran is such a funny comedienne and that show was perfect for her. Many laugh out loud moments. She deserves a sitcom that better suits her talents. Indebted was funny at times, but sitcoms are so different nowadays. But enjoyed seeing Fran and the understated Steven Webber back on TV.
Like somebody said, after the first few episodes, it found its footing and was actually funny. Networks don’t have time to nurture shows like they did in the past, because of the almighty ad revenue. Too bad. Sometimes I wished that all shows were just one season long, then we wouldn’t get invested in them.
This is a shame, I really enjoyed this, such a fun cast
I will miss the Indebted series. I was really glad to see Fran Drescher back on TV. Now I understand why NBC has the lowest ratings. You will keep Zoeys Extraordinary Playlist, which is good for high school age kids or immature adults and cancel Indebted.
The show had no depth, no worthwhile secondary storyline and always seemed to be missing something. Don’t know if Abby Elliott’s character was directed awkwardly or if that was just how she is naturally, but her moves were always jerky and she appeared to “over act” every time she was speaking. Just didn’t look or feel natural to the audience. Turned me off immediately. Adam Pally’s character was just a spineless mama’s boy always having to “smooth things out“ between his mother and his wife, which was also a turn-off. The lesbian sister role for Jessy Hodges could maybe have been an interesting side story but didn’t seem to fit at all with the show. Every time the writers had her doing something away from or separate from the rest of the family, we “tuned out”, it seemed, hoping it would be a short diversion and the regular story would resume quickly. Lastly, the writing was just awful. Short quips, stupid puns and very unnatural. It just didn’t flow. If I were blind and relied solely on hearing people speak during television shows to determine if I liked it or not, I wouldn’t even have made it to episode 2. Yeah, it was that bad. Went back to rewatching The Nanny to compare the shows and immediately saw, heard and felt the difference – the writing, the characters, the side-stories – all flowed and all were equally well-written and executed. It just worked. It still has a huge following! The developers of Indebted really should have done their homework before putting Indebted on the air. It could have been decent.
Also, WHAT happened to the kids/grandkids? Saw them in the preview and the little boy in one other episode? It was so confusing!
Yea that’s true! Kids were cute in the preview episode. Show needed children or something to make it more entertaining.
Fran Drescher was the reason I got into Indebted.I watched the first 10 episodes on NBC’s website, and this cancellation leaves me with no desire to watch the last two. I’m sorry it ended up with terrible reviews and viewership. If I ran NBCUniversal, I’d have moved Indebted to that new Peacock service in a heartbeat.
Spotted Indebted on hulu. After 15 minutes into episode 1, I was hooked. I will enjoy all episodes. Serious critics need to have their own website. I enjoy entertainment to be entertaining. Indebted is entertaining.
I hate when you get into a TV show like Indebted it was a great show they should at least let the show’s go at least two seasons then maybe more people can start watching they also didn’t show any advertisements about the show thank God I’m not an actor after one season you get thrown to the dogs .there are many other poor shows they leave on that should go off it’s to bad maybe even change its time slot like they do for other shows it was a great show to bad
I’m not surprised but still disappointed. I really loved Steven Weber and Fran together they are hilarious. The actors playing the younger cple and the ones playing the kids should have been overhauled and recast. They were not good. The kids did not act well. And then they disappeared. Move Steven and Fran to something new. They are awesome together!
