The time has come for McGarrett and Magnum to say aloha to each other.
TVLine has learned that a full-on crossover between CBS’ Hawaii Five-0 and Magnum P.I. is officially happening, on Friday, Jan. 3, 2020 in back-to-back episodes.
In fact, showrunner Peter M. Lenkov tells us that the Magnum half of the crossover has already completed filming, and the Five-0 half is nearly done.
Though this merging of the Aloha State-based procedurals did not come to fruition during Magnum‘s freshman run, as initially hoped, Lenkov had told TVLine over the summer that he was resolved to making it happen this TV season. Weeks later, he updated us, “We have narrowed down a story.”
That story will find “our Five-0 guys kicking down doors” to track down a POI at a hotel — unaware that private eyes Thomas Magnum and Juliet Higgins are surveilling the same room. “In a way, Higgins and Magnum become witnesses that Five-0 needs to help them,” says Lenkov. “And our two worlds collide!”
Specifically, Magnum, Higgins, TC and Rick (played by Jay Hernandez, Perdita Weeks, Stephen Hill and Zachary Knighton) will appear in that Friday’s Five-0 episode alongside McGarrett & Co., after which Five-0‘s Junior, Tani and Quinn (played by Beulah Koale , Meaghan Rath and Katrina Law) will continue on to Magnum P.I.
“It’s a big-stakes story that really feels like a two-hour movie,” says Lenkov. And while the series’ showrunner feared he would have a hard time convincing Magnum‘s much smaller cast that the “double-ups” (filming two episodes at once) were worth it, “That was not an issue at all.”
The awaited crossover comes in the nick of time, seeing as Lenkov’s MacGyver reboot will rejoin CBS’ Friday slate on Feb. 7, forcing Magnum to hit pause on its sophomore season.
Lenkov’s Five-0 reboot previously has crossed over with NCIS: Los Angeles (not a show he runs) and, more recently, MacGyver (in a March 2017 episode that saw Daniel Dae Kim’s Chin and Grace Park’s Kono giving Mac an assist). In addition, Lenkov’s Hawaii shows to date have enjoyed several micro-crossovers, with Five-0 characters such as Kamekona (played by Taylor Wily), Duke (Dennis Chun), Noelani (Kimee Balmilero), Flippa (Shawn Mokuahi Garnett) and P.I. Harry Brown (William Forsythe) popping up on Magnum.

Is it really a Hawaii 50 crossover without Danny OR Steve??
I think this will be good. I like both shows. I’m annoyed they are chopping up Magnum’s season to shove MacGuyver in. Why not air MacGuyver in full after Magnum concludes?
I agree 100% Kath. Magnum P.I. is my favorite show. They’ve done an excellent job on the reboot and I know many people who also agree. This is very disappointing news.
I agree. Magnum is a great show that I enjoy much more than MacGuyver. I love the actors, story lines and the beautiful Hawaiian scenery! MacGuyver can air after Magnum concludes its season (in my humble opinion)!
I feel the same way..why cant we have both?
This is amazing. I was starting to loose hope, crossover will ever happen since the shows wont be together anymore. I’m glad they will make it happen before MacGyver begins.
So the main cast of Magnum goes on H50 but only the secondary cast cross over to Magnum? Is Magnum not worthy of having the main stars from H50 on it? Seems a bit rude.
I think you may be reading too far into the storyline, be patient 🙂
Given their current salaries, Magnum would have to pay O’Loughlin and Caan too much. Makes sense if you think of it from that perspective…
Would they get their current Hawaii Five-0 salary for being on the other show? I assumed that they’d get guest star rates. Which, based off of what they make per episode, would be a pretty big downgrade and not really worth their time.
It’s a shame Mcgarrett won’t crossover too.
I hate that Magnum has to hit pause. Hopefully it won’t be benched long and they bring it back while either H50 or BB are in rerun mode.
I agree just because hawaii 5 O got rid of all of the previous minority cast they have fallen in ratings and are going to ruin Magnum PI. I will not watch either program now. I hope others follow.
I was looking at my online mailbox and found an email from TV Line. I was thrilled to read that Hawaii 5 O and Magnum PI is going to have a cross over episode. I had sent an email to CBS Audiences website a few months ago to ask them when will Hawaii 5 O and Magnum PI have a cross over episode. I told them that they are in the same state, island and the same Hawaii Police Department. After reading the email, all I can say is that I can’t wait to see it. It is going to be on in January 2020.
Magnum pi and Hawaii five o together that’s great
Just go for the Triple already. MacGyver+Magnum+5-0.
Pretty sure it was Mac offering assistance to Chin and Kono – not the other way around.
OK.
For a network trying to boost Magnum PI’s ratings, excluding HF-O’s two leads isn’t going to
help.
I’d like to see Commissioner Reagan from Blue Bloods (Tom Selleck, original Magnum) in the reboot. Maybe a commissioners convention in Hawaii or the new Magnum visits NYC.
Yes!
WHY???? DON’T DO US ANY FAVORS!!!!!!
You OK…?
Please, just try not to give away the entire plot and ending before the episodes air as has been happening lately.
That is awesome for Hawaii 50 and Magnum PI.
A very stupid move by CBS to halt Magnum half way through the second season. It would have been better to have Magnum complete the season & bring MacGyer on a summer show. i guess that was too sensible for CBS to consider. The reboot of Magnum is really starting to jell & hopefully CBS will support the show. I would like more crossovers between the 2 Hawaii based shows.Looking forward to the episode . I have not watched MacGyer. I was not all that impressed when I gave it a try. I doubt that I will watch it probably leave it on until 5-O starts at 9.
I agree. The characters are growing on me and the stories are getting better. Plus what’s not to like about more Hawaii on a dark dreary night..Having H50 secondary characters making regular appearances almost makes it like we’re seeing 2 hours of H50.
Agree. Magnum is one of our favorite shows, far better than MacGyver. Why pause it now? Seems like a foolish move. More importantly, I surely hope they renew Magnum for season 3!
Hey this is going to be a great crossover, I know PK is going to do a great job. I enjoy Magnum, when I was younger I watched the original Hawaii Five O and Magnum PI. Beautiful scenery and great crew and cast, thank you Peter, much appreciated
Wow, I love this! Two of my favorite shows are finally going to do a crossover. Magnum has become so much better this season, especially since they have officially made Magnum and Higgins partners in the p.i. business. The storylines have been great, lots of good writing, and I certainly am enjoying it so much! And what else is there to say about H50? McGarrett and company are always terrific, it is probably the best series that has been rebooted, and just may be surpassing the original’s run! I remember years ago reading that Jack Lord had only accepted doing the original H50 because he thought it wouldn’t last more than 3 years. Boy, was he surprised when it went on to be the longest running (12 years) crime show of its time!
Great idea. However, I’m saying again how ridiculous I think it is to stop Magnum in the middle of the season to bring on MacGyver, then bring Magnum back after MacGyver’s run. Finish Magnum, then bring in MacGyver. People will lose interest in Magnum.
Is everyone just going to gloss over the fact that they talked about the old Magnum PI show in an episode of Hawaii 5-0? Heck, they sang the song!
Season 3, Episode 19 – Hoa Pili
Good thing this crossover is being produced right now before CBS screws Magnum P.I. 2018 over by benching it until the Summer, all because CBS still wants to air a full season of MacGyver 2016 even though they benched that series to midseason. What’s next, cancelling Hawaii Five-0 without a proper send-off next Spring? CBS is quickly becoming “The Screwover Network”.
what episode of the series 10 will this take place???
I wish CBS would leave Magnum PI alone! It’s a really well done, fun show with great characters. I will not be watching until it comes back, have no interest in McGyver whatsoever!
Why isn’t Magnum PI on next Friday? Can’t stand McGyver. Magnum is a great show! Bring it back.
I’m so disappointed that magnum P.I. isn’t on the air!! This is the one tv show that iso look forward to watch! 😢
Magnum and Hawaii Five-0 have both aired new episodes the past two weeks. I’m not sure why you aren’t seeing them.
I want the new Magnum back!
I finally got my family to accept it and we really love it!
Get Magnum PI back on Friday night
