Game Of Thrones' In-The-Works Sea Snake Series Now Will Be Animated
If and when the Sea Snake's storied travels become an official HBO series, they'll be animated instead of live action, George R.R. Martin says.
In an update to his personal blog Sunday, the Game of Thrones author/House of the Dragon executive producer gave an update on some yet-to-be-greenlit projects based on the fantasy series he created. Though none have officially been ordered to series yet, "I think we are getting close to taking the next step with a couple of them," Martin wrote.
He explained that of four ideas for animated shows, only two of them are still in contention at HBO, and work on those concepts "continues apace." In addition, Nine Voyages, the potential series centered on the Sea Snake, has been moved from live action to animated — "a move I support fully," he wrote.
Martin explained that because the exploits of Corlys Velaryon (aka the character played by Steve Toussaint in House of the Dragon) take place mostly aboard a ship at sea, and would feature different ports each week, "budgetary constraints would likely have made a live action version prohibitively expensive."
He added: "There's a whole world out there. And we have a lot better chance of showing it all with animation. So now we have three animated projects underway."
Update: A rep for HBO tells TVLine, "We don't have anything to report here."
In related news, HBO CEO and chairman Casey Bloys recently said none of the various Game of Thrones spinoffs in development "is close to a green light or anything... but we are always working on different scripts and ideas."
Those in-the-works concepts reportedly include a Jon Snow series centered on Kit Harington's character. Meanwhile, HBO gave a series order to A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, which is based on Martin's Dunk and Egg novellas, in April 2023. And House of the Dragon will be back with new episodes in Summer 2024. (See first Season 2 photos.)
