A couple of faces familiar to Whovians will be around to bid Jodie Whittaker adieu in her final episode of Doctor Who, a new trailer reveals.
A promo for the Thirteenth Doctor’s last episode, which BBC America released Sunday, prominently featured the Doctor’s former companions Tegan Jovanka and Ace — both of whom appeared on the British sci-fi series prior to its current iteration, which began in 2005.
Janet Fielding played Tegan opposite Tom Baker as the Fourth Doctor and Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor. Aldred portrayed Ace during Sylvester McCoy’s run as the Seventh Doctor.
The trailer also showed the return of Jemma Redgrave (Grantchester) as Kate Stewart and Jacob Anderson (Game of Thrones) as Vinder. The spot aired during Legend of the Sea Devils, in which the Doctor, Yaz and Dan traveled to 19th-century China, where a small coastal village was under threat from both the fearsome pirate queen Madam Ching and a monstrous alien force. The installment was the second of three special episodes that will cap Whittaker’s run as the Thirteenth Doctor.

A bit unusual that they have kept the name of the next doctor a secret at this late date. The final episode with it’s regeneration scene was filmed last year.
Maybe they didn’t film the new actor then. They could do everything but, and then do a CG shot in a private studio a few days before airing with the new actor…
I think it’s a cool idea to let people see who it is live on the show. But also for someone like me who stopped watching at like the start of the second season with Whittaker, the lack of an announcement means I’ve forgotten to care. (TVLine to the rescue, lol)
They definitely didnt film the new actor at the same time, Whittaker mentioned in an interview that she was finished filming, had filmed everything including the Regeneration scene, but still didnt know who the next Doctor was. (I believe she also mentioned that she was never on the same set as Peter Capaldi when they filmed his Regeneration scene.)
Rachel Talalay confirmed that in a magazine interview. It was far from certain she was going to direct Whittaker’s incoming scene after directing Twice Upon a Time, but Chibnall took her out and confirmed he really wanted her to do it. There were a few days in between.
I reckon its because, my theory, she will regenrate into Tennant and it will leave it on a cliffhanger and he will be in the 60th and then the new Doctor will appear.
I honestly think they will regenarate her into him as a cliffhanger
I love that they’re bringing back the actors from the old shows, but then I see the cast of Whittaker’s seasons…especially that guy pretending to be the Master…and I emotionally do what I started doing literally during the final few episodes that I watched of Whittaker’s run, being drift right off…
I hope the people who still enjoy the show get a good finale, but I can’t be bothered until there’s a new direction and cast.
Funny you should say that because the Master is the only thing from 13’s run that I would say has worked out perfectly. Everything else has been wasted potential.
Maybe he got better after the episode I saw (part of; I literally could not stay awake for this show). I am glad to hear he worked for someone. I just had a strong feeling of “wrong” and “haven’t we done this a million times???” before I quit.
I really liked the first couple episodes/first season with the previous Master and tbh I think they ended up overusing even him, so I absolutely didn’t want another Master/more Master. And I just didn’t like this new guy’s vibe and where they seemed to be going with the character. Maybe if the rest of the show had been better, I would have formed a different opinion later, but it just wasn’t worth it when nothing else was working, either.
Hopefully, they will give Ace a proper send off then her original outing.
Yeah, they really mistreated her. Ace deserves a good send off.
Ace was my#1 companion I wanted to see return! YEA!!! (Please let her have the bat!)
Russell T Davis, who produced Dr Who from 2005 relaunch with Christopher Eccleston and then David Tennant is returning with the next series. So what comes next should be different from recent series.
As a kid, I pretended to be Teagan for reasons I can’t now remember, but I had no clue who either of them was without the article. Hoping Davies’ return improves the writing. I gave up on 13 and the warm hugs all around mentality of the current show. I read once that the new writer takes care of the new Doctor’s first scene, so it makes sense it would be filmed separately.
Loved the return of the Sea Devils. Looking forward to the centennial special, as well as the return of both Tegan & Ace. Looking forward to seeing who they cast as the 14th Doctor as well as the 14th season in general. Excited about what Russel T. Davies has planned. What about anyone else?
Tegan is in my ‘top 3’ list of companions, so I’m thrilled to see her back in the mix. She was the first companion I can recall who dished it back at the Doctor (“the mouth on legs”) when he needed it—ultimately deciding to quit traveling with him because there was too much violence/killing. And of course there is Ace, who was another “step forward” in pro-active companions who did more than just stand around waiting to be kidnapped or chased by the bad guys. Two great ‘blasts from the past’ that might function as a bit of a palate cleanser after a couple of years of…..well, uneven storytelling (to be kind).
I Hope Russel T Davis deletes all that mess. Even the doctor’s backstory they managed to destroy.
🙄
I’m just not ready yet. She’s my fav doctor since 10. I will put this off as long as I can. All I know is if they go back to a white man, I’m done. I’m hoping a female POC, then they can do whatever they want.
I hope Whittaker gets a well-written send off. She’s been great as the Doctor, but saddled with some truly horrible writing. Even the apologists who dismissed early criticism as sexism (which a lot of it was) have started saying the writing has been horrible.
maybe the opening season in 2018 was tepid but after that it got way better, especially with classic monsters back, ‘dr ruth’, a new master and the ‘timeless’ child.
Autumn 2022. Can’t she, like, go back in time to 2019 and end it there?
Looking forward to the return of RTD, who will hopefully retcon all the nonsense from the Chibnal run.
