Well, this is pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty… inevitable: The end appears to maybe-possibly be nigh for Curb Your Enthusiasm.
In a since-deleted tweet, Curb producer Jon Hayman pseudo-announced on Tuesday that the upcoming 12th season of HBO’s Larry David-fronted comedy will be the series’ swan song.
“Maybe you love the show. Maybe you hate the show. Maybe you don’t give a s–t,” Hayman wrote, alongside a behind-the-scenes photo. “In any event, shooting the last scene of the last episode of the final season.”
HBO has not yet commented on Hayman’s tweet.
It was back in August that HBO and David jointly confirmed that Curb would return for Season 12. (The show’s 11th season wrapped on Dec. 26, 2021.)
With tongue planted firmly in cheek, David said, “Playing the role of Larry David has been the greatest honor of my life. In researching this multi-faceted, multi-talented man, I discovered that there’s more to him than I ever could have imagined: He speaks six languages, brines his own pickles and spearheads a national movement to install a bidet in every home. I’ve also been told from numerous sources that he is the most generous of lovers. I am so excited to once again transform into this force of nature. I only pray that I can do him justice.”
HBO is staring down the imminent end of two other Emmy-winning series: Succession and Barry.
It is long overdue. It is not that the show isn’t funny, but it has become a parody of itself.
It used to be funny to see Larry and a random stranger argue about real life situations. Now everything feels so fake and they force those shouting matches into unnatural scenarios.
When you get to the point where Larry David is dating Julie Bowen and Elizabeth Banks, yeah, it might be time to wrap it up.
I know a lot of people who love this show (although the humor is too cringey for me to enjoy). But it makes sense that at 75, Larry wants to slow things down a little. (On the other hand, I wouldn’t be surprised if he got bored and decided to make a few more seasons 5 or 10 years from now.)
I always sort of liked HBO’s attitude of “any time Larry wants to make another season, we make another season.” If Larry himself really wants to end things, fine, but otherwise I hope they keep that attitude.
Curb has given me the most enjoyment of any show in my life, bar none. T.V. timer on 30 minutes, any episode any season, I curl up and go to sleep with a smile on my face.
I’ve read that its a healthy way to end the day.
Thanks Larry, I mean that.
P.S. I’m 77 and still loving my life, even when I have a” Larry David moment”LOL !! I also respect the hell out of wood!
I’m sure that Larry David will get bored in 5 years and so another series. Wait and see.
