The 118 is on the move. Though 9-1-1‘s current sixth season will be its last on Fox, the procedural has been renewed for Season 7 on a new network — ABC!
Season to date, 9-1-1 is averaging 7.3 million total viewers and a 1.0 demo rating (with Live+7 playback) — numbers that are not only good enough for No. 1 among all Fox dramas, but that would also qualify as the most-watched and top-rated entertainment program on ABC this TV season.
“Thanks to the creative drive of Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear, as well as the talented cast, 9-1-1 has been one of the most defining and original dramas on network television over the last six seasons and we are honored to bring it to the esteemed group of series on ABC,” Disney Television Group president Craig Erwich says in a statement. “It’s a privilege to keep 9-1-1 in the family with 20th Television producing, and we look forward to telling more heart-racing and uplifting stories about these beloved characters on our air.”
“It has been an honor to be the founding network of 9-1-1 and we are grateful to Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear, together with Angela Bassett, Peter Krause, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Oliver Stark, Aisha Hinds, Kenneth Choi, Ryan Guzman and the rest of the cast and crew, and 20th Television for delivering such an impactful series to Fox,” Fox adds in a statement obtained by our sister site Deadline. “We wish them well after 9-1-1’s final Fox season concludes.”
Meanwhile, 9-1-1: Lone Star has been renewed for a fifth season, but unlike its parent series, the spinoff will remain on Fox.
9-1-1 stars Bassett as LAPD patrol sergeant Athena Grant-Nash, Krause as LAFD Station 118 captain Bobby Nash, Stark as firefighter Evan “Buck” Buckley, Hinds as firefighter/paramedic Henrietta “Hen” Wilson, Choi as firefighter/paramedic Howie “Chimney” Han, Hewitt as 9-1-1 operator Maddie Buckley, Guzman as firefighter/paramedic Eddie Diaz, Corinne Massiah as May Grant, Marcanthonee Jon Reis as Harry Grant and Gavin McHugh as Christopher Diaz.
TVLine’s 2023 Renewal/Cancellation scorecard has been updated to reflect 9-1-1‘s surprising news. Your thoughts on the procedural’s big move? Drop ’em in a comment below.
This is so weird! Does this mean we won’t have cool crossovers anymore?
Crossovers are usually determined more by the production studio than the network it airs on. For example Chicago PD crossed over with FBI
That wasn’t really a crossover, it was one character moving to a different show temporarily. A crossover requires multiple characters on both shows and one story across both shows.
Who was the Chicago PD/FBI character who crossed over? I don’t ever remember a crossover between these shows — just CPD and Law & Order: SVU, both on NBC. I have been scouring my mind to try and think of a CPD/FBI x-ing and am coming up blank…..
Tracy Spiradakos’ Haley Upton guest-starred on FBI for an episode.
Upton crossed over to FBI a few seasons ago. From Chicago PD.
Actually no. A crossover requires one character to move over to another show for one episode or more. For example, there was a season 16 episode of SVU that was technically a crossover with P.D because Erin Lindsay showed up in the last couple of minutes.
That was a crossover by every definition of the word. She was playing the same character and she was sent there at the end of the Chicago episode. It doesn’t have to involve characters going back and forth.
Who from PD crossed over to FBI? I don’t remember that. Shows RARELY cross network lines. I remember a Chicago PD cross over with Law & Order: SVU (both are NBC shows) but not with FBI (a CBS show). Curious who it was as I watch both shows. LMK!
Tracy Spiridakos

Totally forgot about this one. Wow. Thanks for the reminder. That said, I actually don’t remember the episode at all and I thought I never missed one. LOL
I am just glad they are somewhere Fox or ABC it does not matter I just did NOT want to lose them all together!
Hailey Upton from PD was on a FBI episode.
It was Law & Order SVU, not FBI.
No, there was an FBI one too. See Matt’s note about it being Upton.
The Rookie and 9-1-1 are now both LAPD…I wouldn’t be mad. 😝
Honestly, I kind of would be. It’s been really obvious up until this point that The Rookie and 911 exist in different universes.
A crossover would imply that all of the ridiculous plots on 911 (the earthquakes, tsunamis, dam breaks, etc) also happened on the Rookie and just… no thank you.
Please, please keep them separate.
Like the Rookie does not have ridiculous plots? LOlL
There’s a difference between ridiculous plots like an unbelievable story about an escaped serial killer that wouldn’t have needed to be mentioned on 9-1-1, and a tsunami that killed literally thousands of people but somehow didn’t affect the characters on the Rookie in any way. Not to mention the pandemic never happened in the Rookie universe, but was the focus of an entire season of 9-1-1.
Crossing them over creates giant plot holes for absolutely no reason whatsoever. The shows for the most part have different fan bases. Keep them separate.
The rookie is A silly show. 911 is way better so no crossovers please.
Agreed
it would be interesting if they could have some crossovers with the Grey’s Anatomy universe. they also have some rather strange plots, so it could work. right?
Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel managed to still have crossovers when Buffy moved from the WB to UPN.
Not at first. During season 3 of Angel and season 6 of Buffy (the first on UPN), there were no crossovers at all. They even tried to avoid mentioning the other character as much as possible.
This was relaxed for Buffy’s final season, which saw Willow go over to Angel and Angel himself appear in Buffy’s final episode.
Well, a crossover. But, still.
To be fair, we haven’t had many crossovers with OG and Lone Star. We had one major crossover and a couple of tiny ones.
Actually, The Practice and Ally McBeal, did it way back when. The shows were on ABC and FOX, respectively. They were both created by David E. Kelly.
9-1-1: Lone Star blows chunks. It has never had the quality of its parent show.
I’m glad it got saved I like the OG way better than Lonestar only reason I watch Lonestar is for Natacha Karam. ABC is my favorite network too so it’s a win-win for me.
Its A great show and does the parent show proud. Rob lowe rocks as owen
Agree I find some of storyline s hard to watch
I have liked Lone Star better than the original during certain seasons.
Probably but not out of the question. Networks generally do not want to help promote shows on other networks. Picket Fences and Xfiles were aiming to do a crossover but the networks objected. But there have been a few exception to this: Ally McBeal and The Practice pulled it off as well as Buffy and Angel.
Ally McBeal and The Practice were both David E Kelly shows and both set in Boston, as was Boston Legal.
Maybe a The Rookie/911 crossover…🤷🏼♀️
I’d be okay if there weren’t any. They always seemed to happen on LS and not OGs time anyway. I feel like LS has more than plenty of characters they can service better than an OG crossover.
Dang, I am surprised! But since I usually watch it on Hulu, the station it’s on doesn’t matter too much.
It’ll get better numbers on ABC than on FOX. That and ABC could use another strong scripted performer.
Why do you think it’ll do better on ABC? It’s unlikely to gain new viewers just due to a network switch.
You’d be surprised how many people are set in their ways and will not watch a show because they don’t like the network.
I agree. My mom just seems to stick to ABC, CBS and NBC. I think it’s because she knows all the “cartoons” she’s seen while going thru channels and just stays away thinking all their shows won’t be her kind of show. I guarantee that she will end up watching 911 when it moves thinking it’s a brand new show.
Very true. A lot of viewers have lost faith in FOX because it cancels shows out of boredom and call it too expensive to produce.
Many refused to even chance investing in 9-1-1 because of FOX.
FOX needlessly puts viewer discretion labels on most of their shows. That alone could stop some people from watching.
Interesting as we have Station 19 in place at ABC. Maybe 911 could help on Tuesdays if Feds is let go. Slot it between Rookie and Will Trent. ABC needs Sunday help. Maybe 911 plays straight thru September to February until American Idol starts.
No, 9-1-1 should continue to lead off Mondays where it has been for a long time. The garbage Bachelor franchise should be reduced to January and summer with its Paradise spin-off cancelled. It was only in fall because of the 2020 shutdowns. Fall Mondays on ABC can be 9-1-1 on its new network, The Good Doctor moved an hour earlier, and The Good Lawyer following its parent show.
Not gonna happen! No one seems to realize this but ABC has Monday night football again in the fall. That means no Monday programming till after the new year.
ABC is also bringing DWTS back from Disney+, so they’ll have to put that in the schedule somewhere too. May Sundays would be a good night for that. Non scripted shows may be pushed back into the season anyway because of the WGA strike..
You know, I just saw that Fox picked up a first responder show set in Hawaii and I wondered if this was going to happen! I find it shocking but also not. It makes sense because of Disney’s ownership, but my understanding is that switching networks is nonetheless tricky. I can only hope that moving networks will also means creative changes that fix some of the issues in recent seasons…
It’s alright as long as they don’t change the storylines and have the same people on board. I love the show. Great actors.
This could be good or bad for the quality. I’ll be optimistic and hope it’s good. Let’s also hope that they change showrunners while they’re at it…
It always cracks me up when people say Kristin Reidl is ruining the series – when the ratings were always the best on Mondays, vs Lonestar’s tragic and embarrassing decline this season. Which show is really being ruined??? If you look at the ratings, Kristin is doing JUST fine, it’s Tim Minear as the showrunner for Lonestar who needs to be replaced.
911 ratings have also declined since Kristen took over as showrunner, especially when you compare it to shows that have been on for much longer than 911 (like Chicagos ). The deadline article mentioned the decline too. But I don’t know how much it matters when all ratings are down and they are changing the way that they measure/value. Anyway, my main complaint about Kristen is the “creative” – which are usually the opposite of – decisions that she has made. Certain stories and characters are now frequently unwatchable. I never had that issue with the show before season five. And I don’t watch Lonestar.
The problem with your logic is that 911 isn’t the only show seeing a decline – every single show has seen massive declines in ratings. However, 911’s declines are proportionally to the overall trends in the industry, and as I mentioned, it regularly is the #1 scripted show on Mondays. In fact, it has ratings that are even better than The Rookie’s. Other shows, like Lonestar, have had massive declines that are much steeper than the industry standard, and indicate that viewers are stopping watching the show for other reasons than just declining interest in network TV. So besides your whiny Royal highness, Kristen hasn’t ruined the show at all. She’s holding it steady in the face of declining TV.
Uh, I explicity noted “ratings are all down” and that I didn’t know how much it mattered. You are snapping at me about ratings when I specifically said that my MAIN issue with Kristen is the many non-sensical and poor quality stories since she took over, not her effect on ratings. And I’d argue that the STARS of the show, like Angela Bassett, are the ones responsible for keeping it steady in spite of her. Finally, you seem oddly fixated on Lonestar and, as I said, I don’t watch it so I don’t care! Take it up with someone who does!
Here’s the thing George – if her plot lines were real you that bad, and nonsensical, people would stop watching. And they haven’t. So your argument that she’s ruining the show is shown to be untruthful through actual hard data.
Yes!! I am also crossing my fingers that this means Kristen will be out or at least moved back down to just a writer/ep. Her creative decisions have all bombed and she has zero sense of pacing or how to plan and execute arcs. Good riddance.
I don’t really consider being the #1 scripted show on Mondays to be the sign of any creative decisions – your critique sounds a lot like misogyny! Since there’s no actual data to back it up.
Misogyny? 🤣 Eventually the 9-1-1 fandom will stop throwing that word around like a 19-year-old who just learned what it meant after taking their first Women’s & Gender Studies class (and this is coming from someone with a dual major in WGS). People are allowed to not like the decisions that she has made or the things that she has said, and they’ve given ample, well-thought out reasons why! Women are not immune to criticism and claiming that they are because of… what? Their gender? Is actually way more misogynistic 🙄
What’s more misogynistic is writing four (so far) female characters just to be Buck and Eddie’s love interest and nothing else. Ana is a blank slate. Taylor’s personality has to be rewritten to be a generic girlfriend and THEN her original personality came back when it’s time to let her go. Lucy’s primary presence on the plot is to kiss Buck to create drama with Taylor, and her writing after that is a Mary Sue and Kristen’s pet. Natalia is so far only interested in Buck’s death while being completely bland and Buck’s character is already damaged because of this plot.
Wait! What!?!? Does this mean Lone Star is next (obviously not next season with their FOX renewal, but eventually)?
I think so. Better for the longevity of both shows.
I bet Lone Star’s cast is significantly cheaper than the OG. Rob Lowe and Gina Torres vs. Angela Bassett, Peter Krause and Jennifer Love Hewitt for the big names. And the OG has a more experienced secondary cast.
I’m so happy that this means no more even potential crossovers with Lonestar. That show was a drag – good riddance in my opinion! Looking forward to even better ratings than the good ones we’ve had so far.
I’m torn because I mostly love show and don’t want to see it cancelled but I hate all the revolving beds on the ABC first responder shows and am a bit worry they will start breaking up my favorite couples now.
that’s the showrunner choice more than the ABC and it will be a terrible decision.
That is good that the network can’t make that happen. Although I’m honestly not the biggest fan of 911 currrent show runner I’m just glad that she hasn’t killed anyone off yet.
The bed hopping on Station 19 is borderline incestuous, hahaha!!!
It felt like season 3 of station 19 was to erase season 1 and 2 events and reintroduce the characters.
Can this please be the final nail in the Rookie:Feds coffin? Let it go away, I’m begging
.
And yes I’m aware that it’s generally rude to wish cancellation upon a show that I don’t even watch. But not when the constant ‘crossovers’ diminish the quality (and the ratings) of the show that I actually do.
.
Congrats to all the 911 fans though!
Seriously. Agree 100%. Even the Rookie:Feds promos are hard to watch.
The strange thing with Rookie:Feds is IMHO it would be good if it wasn’t for Niecy Nash. Even if we ignore how unrealistic it is that she hadn’t been sacked on the dress code front alone or how the character is almost completely a Mary Sue (Atleast Nolan had his faults and weaknesses over on the mother ship, with her being a guidance counsellor apparently gave her this super power of being great at everything), the biggest issue is she just chews the scenery all the time and not in a Shatner kind of way that works, it’s in the way that’s so bad that Tommy Wiseau would fire her for). They should kill her off and either stick with everyone else or bring in a new Rookie Fed played by someone more capable
This just sucks for those of us with Directv who don’t get ABC and haven’t since October. I guess this will just be another show added to the list of great ones we can’t watch!
Just a suggestion but an indoor antenna on Amazon costs about $40 and will likely receive at least abc, cbs, nbc, fox and cw depending on your distance from the towers(there are sites to tell you how far you are and which channels youll receive). You can also watch shows on the ABC app(although the shows are a week delayed without a cable subscription)
The ABC app doesn’t work when DirecTv has removed the channel. And as far as a local antenna, we are in a rural area and not sure if it would work.
You can see what type of antenna you’d need to pick up diff channels here: https://www.antennaweb.org/
Good luck!
I live in the boonies. My antenna’s not fabulous, but it gets all the main channels. Like 20 bucks from Best Buy for a low/ mid range one (indoor). If you live in a land with no cell reception, you might be SOL, but that’s when you just return the product.
I’m not sure why the ABC app wouldn’t work unless your trying to access it thru your directv. Which yes it wouldnt work if your trying to access it thru that but you can download the ABC app on your phone or a mobile device(possibly your tv depending on the smart tv tv, i only use it on mobile though). I’ve got no cable/satellite/directv so the app is how I access ABC when not watching shows live. That said if your unsure if you’d get reception on an antenna and don’t want to waste money/time Ive use this site
https://www.fcc.gov/media/engineering/dtvmaps
I have DirecTV and get ABC. Must be the TV market you are in.
Where are you that you don’t get ABC with DirecTV? We’re in the Ocala area (our locals are in Orlando. about 100 miles away, which makes using an antenna almost impossible) and we get them.
.
Try calling them and see if you can get the national feed of the ABC broadcasts.
This … is wild. Sooo … will people be keen. enough to watch and follow both shows on different networks?
I have a feeling “Rookie: Feds” is going.
I can see a 9-1-1, Rookie or New Drama, Will Trent Combo happening on Tuesdays.
Wonder what will happen next …
I’ll watch both shows wherever they are. Any opportunity to devote fewer synapses to Faux is a good opportunity. Wish ABC would by Lonestar, too.
Are you in my brain? I was thinking the same thing. The only other shows I watch on Fox are Crime Scene Kitchen and Gordon Ramsey’s shows, plus the occasional Yankee game when Fox grabs one on Saturday (with the sound off. I can’t stand their announcers).
I’m guessing FOX was looking to either cut costs on the show or cancel it outright. Shooting in LA is probably not cheap, and with this being season 7 I imagine a lot of contracts are ending or already ended. The show probably still had good enough ratings and brought in enough money for ABC to justify bringing it over to their network.
It wouldn’t surprise me if a lot of contracts were up after six seasons, not just original cast members and writing/production staff but between 20th Television (Disney) and Fox, and Fox did not meet Disney’s price.
Going by what I’ve seen elsewhere, Fox just cancelled it.
I believe Lone Star shoots in LA for the most part, as well.
well … maybe sets but plenty of Austin location shots… A recent episode was in front of the famous Texas state Capitol Building which would be tough to duplicate and even fake out with CGI
I totally saw this coming, said no one ever, lmao!! I don’t care where it airs as long as it does. Usually watch on Hulu anyway. But it is kinda weird.
There was actually an article about a month ago (I can’t remember where) that talked about how ABC was looking at acquiring 9-1-1 and that was the reason why the network was taking so long to announce a Rookie season 6 pick up. They were still figuring out budgeting and that was going to be a big factor on whether or not the Feds spinoff would get a second season.
So it didn’t come completely out of nowhere. And yes the reason that was given was the huge budget that 9-1-1 requires. Considering that ABC/Disney has also been going through massive budget cuts, I’m curious to see what the show ends up looking like after the move.
oof i had a minor heart attack there, but thank god ABC is picking it up! i’m not ready to say goodbye yet to this marvelous show!
What the what? Very strange!
Whoa ! 911. Is the cast moving too ? All the actors ? It’s my fav show. And I love the cast !
We need more comedy shows like Mrs. Browns Boys, now that is a comedy. Get something new.
I don’t care what channel it comes on as long as it’s renew its a great show
I don’t understand why you all are moving 911 to ABC but, I love the show and I will follow it to ABC. I am glad that 911 Lone Star will remain on NBC.
Fox not NBC
I can think of a similar situation in the 1970s: The $6 Million Man stayed on ABC, while The Bionic Woman spinoff moved to NBC for its third and final season.
Shades of Buffy and Angel.
I’m assuming cost was the factor here if Fox was willing to throw away their most-watched show. It’s almost like networks want to kill themselves.
Will they change cast members or actors?
This show’s writing and creative direction has suffered with KR and her mean merry band of insipid writers. Ever since S3 it’s gone down in every way. She needs to take her crazy band and go back to fan fiction. No one cares if she screws that up. Don’t bother to defend her ( or is it her in a fake account?) Too many of us can track when this show started bombing. Take her girl crush on Buck and move it elsewhere. There are plenty of actors on this show that deserve more and better storylines. Too much creative talent being wasted so she could put the spotlight on her boy Buck. Oliver might enjoy some decent material also. Go back to the roots of this show and give us some quality. It will never happen with her within a million miles of the studio!!
So…… the whole blood thinners/lawsuit/seeing Abby/tsunami in s3, was KR’s fault, even though she wasn’t on the show at that point? The show has always had a focus on Buck from the very first episode, and trying to blame that on KR is just straight misogynistic. Also – if she’s ruining the show, why is it continually the #1 scripted show on Mondays when LS is getting series low ratings every week, even after viewers should have adjusted to the switch of nights? Just say you don’t like women and go ❤️
Another person completely misunderstanding and trivializing misogyny. Awesome. Grow up and stop minimizing the very real harms and discrimination that women experience in society because some people don’t think that this lady is good at her job! (And FWIW, while it’s true that Buck has always gotten more attention than he deserves, those storylines are not in any way comparable to the absolute garbage that was his story in season 5 with Taylor and Lucy).
SINCE season 3 is the keyword meaning AFTER. Kristen took over sometime in season 4 and the live overnight ratings have dropped by nearly HALF in that time and the demo drop has been significant as well. Stale storytelling, and arcs that go nowhere just running characters in circles has been brought up by fans continuously for 2 seasons now. Kristen herself said she couldn’t think of any more big opening emergencies AND said she struggles to fill out episode time and wanted to do a musical episode so she wouldn’t have to write plot. She might be alright-ish as a single episode writer with direction from a competent showrunner but she’s bad at the showrunner job and that’s plain as day with how the quality of the show has gone down since she took over.
“Since S3”. Meaning “after” Kristen- you’re slipping!!Even I can understand that!
I’ve actually enjoyed 4, 5, and 6 more than the earlier seasons. Different strokes, I guess.
I watch 911 and 911: Lone Star on Canadian channels. 911 is on Global and 911:Lone Star is on CTV.
