Recent rumors that a Beverly Hills, 90210 reboot/revival is in-the-works have not only been greatly exaggerated — they’re flat-out wrong. While it’s true that a new series inspired by the seminal ’90s teen drama is currently being shopped around, it would not feature the return of Donna Martin, Kelly Taylor & Co.
According to sources, the untitled project is an hour-long mockumentary-style dramedy that would find former 90210 cast members Jennie Garth, Jason Priestley, Tori Spelling, Ian Ziering, Brian Austin Green and Gabrielle Carteris playing themselves — albeit in a somewhat heightened state. The potential series — which was first rumored last March — would chronicle the gang’s efforts to get (another) 90210 revival off the ground.
Fellow 90210 alums Shannen Doherty and Luke Perry are not currently attached to the project.
Mike Chessler and Chris Alberghini, both of whom worked on the first 90210 revival (on the CW) are on board to write and EP. The pair also created So NoTORIous, Spelling’s similarly mockumentary-ish sitcom that aired for one season on VH1 in 2006.
Several outlets, including a broadcast network and one of the major streamers, have expressed interest in the new 90210 project.
A rep for CBS Studios, which is shepherding the non-reboot, declined to comment for this story.
Um ok…
Can we just get a reboot of Gross Pointe then instead??
Omg I would love that. That cancellation still hurts to this day.
Yes, please!
Hmmm…ok…why?
Very Hard PASS. Just do the show with characters. This “playing themselves” idea is uber lame.
This sounds a lot funnier. I thought NoTORIous should have ran much longer than it did. Tori and Loni played great off each other.
Vindication.
I loved so notorious, lol.
No one wants to watch this.
No. Just no. Perhaps someone attached to this was a fan of “Episodes” on Showtime and thought they could out-Matt LeBlanc playing Matt LeBlanc, but I don’t see that happening – I’m not sure ANYONE can out-do Matt playing himself as satisfactorily to me. So no – not interested at all, and I can’t believe a broadcast network is!
So, it sounds like almost the exact same thing as CW Seed’s “Play It Again, Dick.” That web series featured Ryan Hansen playing a somewhat heightened version of himself, chronicling his effort to get a “Veronica Mars” spinoff featuring his Dick Casablancas character off the ground.
Yes, this project sounds incredibly similar to that, and that one was pretty entertaining, so the format does work in principle.
That sounds like fun!
Weren’t you guys the one that first broke it saying it was a revival? Now you’re backtracking?
THR and Deadline broke the story, TVLine relayed Deadline’s article on their website.
I’m not interested in the actors. I would be interested in the return of the characters. Oh well.
Hmmm…was interested in a revival, but probably not this.
Thanks but no thanks!
Mokumentary series? Pass
They decided to work together again for this? WHY?
Sounds like a dumb idea. Would rather just see them return as their characters. That I would watch!
Boooo!
So NoTORIous was a gem, so I’ll def check this out.
Why would anyone want to watch actors and actresses whom playing 90′ show the time ? Bi side to Brian Austin Green i liked to watch characters not the ones who play them?
Okay, I don’t have to get excited by it now. Hard pass.
A revival sounds better than this.
This is a terrible idea.. i would prefer the revival.
I would have much preferred the revival…wamp wamp
