TV's Most Awkward Sex Scenes From Game Of Thrones, Grey's Anatomy, White Lotus, The Boys And More
Every year, TVLine assembles a list of the sexiest scenes that aired over the past 12 months — but not every fictional sexual encounter is hot and steamy. Sometimes, we just want to cover our eyes and cringe until the TV moment is, mercifully, over. In that way, we're kind of like Meredith Grey when she hooked up with her pal George.
Below, we've gathered the most awkward sex scenes that have made their way onto our screens from series such as And Just Like That..., The Americans, The Walking Dead and many more shows. They include everything from unfortunately-timed kid entrances to horrifying masks to the kind of waterworks you never want to experience in the throes of passion.
Our selections also feature a double dose of incest, courtesy of two HBO series, as well as a few truly uncomfortable instances of sex with oneself via clones (things get weird on The Boys!) or time travel hijinks (on yet another HBO drama).
Scroll down for TVLine's list of the most awkward TV sex scenes, with season and episode numbers included in case you want to watch the horror. Then hit the comments to let us know which one made you cringe the most.
The Americans
There was nothing wrong with the idea of married spies Elizabeth and Philip mutually pleasuring each other in the show's infamous "69" scene. Unfortunately, the couple's sexy times were interrupted by their unsuspecting daughter Paige, turning what should have been an intimate moment between adults into a traumatizing one for all involved, including viewers. (Season 2, Episode 1) — Vlada Gelman
And Just Like That...
Sex and the City certainly gave us more than our share of embarrassing sexual encounters, but Max's sequel series actually had one that topped them all. Miranda felt a strong attraction to non-binary stand-up comic Che, and she acted on that attraction in Carrie's kitchen, with Che using her hands to deliver some digital pleasure. But Carrie was in the next room recovering from hip surgery, and she needed Miranda's help to pee. With Miranda otherwise occupied, though, Carrie ended up wetting the bed. Ew. (Season 1, Episode 5) — Dave Nemetz
The Boys
The gory Prime Video series has staged a number of horrifying and/or gruesome sex scenes involving everything from an exploding penis to a human getting it on with an octopus. But supe Splinter using his cloning ability to pleasure himself (and himself and himself) from behind is the image we most wish we could mind-wipe from our brains. It was plenty awkward for Splinter, too, when Frenchie and Kimiko caught him and his clones in the act. Mon dieu, indeed! (Season 4, Episode 2) — Vlada Gelman
BrainDead
When we say this sex scene featured a salami close-up, we're not being euphemistic. In order to rid her brain of the mind-controlling space bugs that had crawled into her cranium — aw, this show was so bonkers — Mary Elizabeth Winstead's Laurel did every "right brain" activity she could manage simultaneously, including having sex with Aaron Tveit's Gareth while indulging in foods like salami and chocolate. Winstead's commitment to the physical comedy here was admirable, but the actual act was weird and gross to behold. (Season 1, Episode 6) — Rebecca Luther
Californication
It doesn't get more awkward than Charlie Runkle. In the show's first season, Hank took one for the team to help Charlie seal the deal with a boxer from Hank's past. The ordeal turned into the unlikeliest of threesomes, begrudgingly for Hank who, to his credit, tried to shut it down. But things got even more uncomfortable when Karen and Marcy walked in on the whole charade just as the lady boxer squirted all over Charlie's face — cringe to the max. (Season 1, Episode 10) — Nick Caruso
Elite
Netflix's Spanish teen soap, eventually, devolved into a series of salacious sex scenes, some steamy, some obviously just for shock value. But Polo giving his friend Ander a hand job, while their pal Guzmán — whose sister Polo had killed! — was passed out next to them in bed was a truly "WTF?!" moment. "You think this is too creepy?" Polo asked. Ander agreed that it was, and yet, that didn't stop him and Polo from going through with their twisted "threesome." (Season 2, Episode 2) — Vlada Gelman
Evil
Even for a show that's not afraid to get deeply weird, this was a humdinger. Kristen (Katja Herbers) decided that bedroom time with her recently returned husband, Andy (Patrick Brammall), needed a little more mrrrrrow. So she skipped over to her closet and returned with a bag full of gags and disturbing, Halloween-style rubber animal masks for them to wear during the act. He was shocked, then kinda into it, then really into it. (Season 2, Episode 8) — Kimberly Roots
Game of Thrones
HBO has really established itself as the Incest Network over the past few years (see below), and this epic fantasy hit kicked off with a shocker in its series premiere, as young Bran walked in on brother and sister Jaime and Cersei Lannister engaging in a bit of sibling affection. This was a secret, of course, so Jaime pushed Bran out a window, hoping to silence the witness, but Bran lived on (albeit badly injured). Thrones threw many uncomfortable (and extraneous) sex scenes at us, but this was the first — and the worst. (Season 1, Episode 1) — Dave Nemetz
Girls
Lena Dunham's HBO comedy had no problem parading naked bodies in front of us, fully embracing how unglamorous sex can be. But if we have to narrow it down to the very most awkward sex scene, we'll go with the time Hannah went back home to Michigan — and we were treated to her parents having vigorous sex in the shower. What's worse, her dad Ted fell out of the shower and tweaked his back, leaving Hannah to find him sprawled out naked on the bathroom floor. Welcome home! (Season 1, Episode 6) — Dave Nemetz
Grey's Anatomy
Meredith's Season 2 hookup with George was a night to remember — for all the wrong reasons. She sobbed through most of the encounter, finally asking, "You're almost done, right?" He was, then, that's for sure. Afterwards, she was horrified that she'd taken advantage of her besotted friend, and he... Aw, gee. Poor George was left feeling like having sex with him was worse than Mer, and certainly he, could have imagined. (Read why the mortifying scene had to be reshot.) (Season 2, Episode 19) — Charlie Marson
The Idol
HBO's gaudy, ill-conceived misfire was basically one long awkward sex scene, with Lily-Rose Depp's pop star Jocelyn and The Weeknd's enigmatic guru Tedros circling each other like dogs in heat. But we'll give the crown to their first lurid BDSM encounter, with a bored-sounding Tedros blindfolding Jocelyn and ordering her around with the least sexy dirty talk we've ever heard. We shouldn't have been surprised: When Jocelyn's friend called Tedros "so rape-y," Jocelyn cooed, "I kinda like that about him." (Season 1, Episode 2) — Dave Nemetz
Lioness
"I'm going to need therapy!" "Scarring!" "I can't believe I saw my mother's....!" "Thanks for the technique tips on the cowgirl position!" Kate had lots to say about walking in on her mom and dad doing the deed, but Joe did her best to frame it as a positive thing, that her parents still love each other in that kind of way. — Matt Webb Mitovich
The Righteous Gemstones
Welp, we suppose you're never too old to be disgusted by the knowledge of your parents' sex life. Just when Jesse, Kelvin and Judy Gemstone were starting to accept their dad Eli's relationship with new girlfriend Lori Milsap, the sibling trio walked in on Eli and Lori indulging in a certain number-based sex position first thing in the morning. They'll never unsee it, and neither will we. (Season 4, Episode 4) — Rebecca Luther
Sex Education
Picking just one scene from Netflix's teen sex dramedy is a tricky feat, but we're keen on the Season 2 opener, which included a masturbatory cold open set to Scala & Kolacny's cover of Divinyls' "I Touch Myself." The sequence showcased just how randy Otis really was as he pleasured himself in an assortment of settings. It all culminated in the car where mom Jean caught him in the act just in time to witness a graphic splat against the window. (Season 2, Episode 1) — Nick Caruso
Three Women
It was already a bit awkward watching Sloane (DeWanda Wise) sleep with another man while her husband Richard (Blair Underwood) looked on just a few feet away. The whole thing became unbearable once Sloane covered her mouth mid-coitus to make an ill-fated run for the toilet, causing Richard to slip in her vomit soon after. Meanwhile, the other man paid no mind to the chaos — or the smell! He continued pleasuring himself in the background as Sloane tossed her cookies. Ew! (Season 1, Episode 1) — Claire Franken
The Time Traveler's Wife
For Henry, being jerked through time was often a curse that left him scrambling for clothes and cover. On the other hand, Henry found going back in time to give oral to a 16-year-old version of himself to be a strange perk of his ability. ("You would, wouldn't you?" he said to his future wife, like it was a totally normal thing.) For viewers, however, it was an incredibly odd and uncomfortable scene, especially when Henry's father, who knew nothing of his son's time-traveling, walked in on the bizarre encounter between the teenage Henrys. (Season 1, Episode 2) — Vlada Gelman
The Walking Dead
Back in Season 10, Negan thought he was being marched to meet his maker by the Whisperers' leader, Alpha. To his surprise — and our horror — she only wanted to get him alone to offer him "a crass reward" for ferreting out a spy. Negan sensibly feared the tryst was a preying-mantis situation that'd cost him his head but rolled with it, anyway — even going so far as to encourage Alpha to keep wearing her (shudder) walker-skin mask. (Season 10, Episode 9) — Charlie Marson
The White Lotus
Remember what we said earlier about HBO being the Incest Network? Yeah, about that: In Season 3 of the luxury vacation dramedy, swaggering douche Saxon kept pushing his meek younger brother Lochlan to get laid. So when they attended a wild full moon party, Lochlan had sex with a woman named Chloe... and he also reached over to, um, give his brother a hand while he was at it. Saxon didn't want to talk about it ever again, and frankly, neither do we. (Season 3, Episode 6) — Dave Nemetz
YOU
There are a few questions no one wants to be asked during sex, and "Did you just...?" is definitely one of them. Joe's, uh, early departure was made even more uncomfortable by the music cutting out right on cue. If only Beck had run for the hills after her incredibly awkward first time with Joe, she might still be alive today. (Season 1, Episode 3) — Andy Swift
