This Is Us' 15 Most Tearjerking Scenes, From Dr. K's Lemonade To 'The Train'
Pearson hive, assemble! (And, uh, make sure you've got those tissues ready.)
When This Is Us airs its final episode tonight (NBC, 9/8c), it'll mark the end of an era for those of us who like our family dramas funny, fraught and full o' feelings. For six seasons, we've followed Jack and Rebecca Pearson's brood as they encountered the joys and sorrows involved with growing up, figuring life out and having offspring of their own.
And man, did they make us cry while they did it! And we just kept coming back for more!
In that lovingly weepy spirit, and to celebrate This Is Us' swan song, we've compiled a list of the show's 15 most tearjerking scenes. We chose moments from across the drama's run, highlighting as many characters as we could. That said, Randall shows up in a lot of the selections — hey, the guy's in touch with his emotions!
The Dr. K speech that kicked things off... William's abrupt farewell in Memphis... a seminal heart-to-heart between Kate and Rebecca — they're all here to warm-up your tear ducts ahead of the series' big goodbye. (Speaking of Rebecca: Make sure to check out our appreciation of Mandy Moore's work over the seasons.)
Of course, we picked the scenes we thought were the saddest and/or most touching, but we want to hear what your favorite This Is Us moments of this nature are, as well. So scroll through the list below, then make sure to hit the comments with the ones you think we missed.
JACK AND REBECCA LOSE THIRD BABY (SEASON 1, EPISODE 1)
"There's no lemon so sour that you can't make something resembling lemonade," Dr. K tells Jack after delivering the news that one of his and Rebecca's triplets didn't survive. Though the advice becomes Pearson family lore, it's cold comfort in the moment.
JACK DOES PUSH-UPS (SEASON 1, EPISODE 9)
A powerful reminder that when it comes to raising kids, it takes a dojo.
RANDALL BREAKS DOWN (SEASON 1, EPISODE 15)
Brothers gotta hug (especially when one is at a very precarious place, mental health-wise).
WILLIAM DIES (SEASON 1, EPISODE 16)
"I'm a little scared," a dying William admits, so a tearful Randall climbs onto the hospital bed and calms his biological father, using a technique he learned from his adoptive father. (But who's going to help us breathe through our sobs?)
JACK AND REBECCA CONFRONT JACK'S DRINKING PROBLEM (SEASON 2, EPISODE 2)
"I have a problem, Rebecca, and I've hidden it from you for a very long time." Thank goodness she doesn't listen when he tells her he needs to fix it on his own.
KEVIN HITS ROCK BOTTOM (SEASON 2, EPISODE 8)
"That necklace, it's the only thing I have left in my life from my dad. It's the only thing I have," Kevin tells his one-night-stand, starting to cry, as Justin Hartley turns in one of his finest scenes of the series.
REBECCA COMFORTS KATE ABOUT HER MISCARRIAGE (SEASON 2, EPISODE 9)
Because sometimes, the only person who will truly understand is your mom.
DÉJA LEAVES RANDALL AND BETH (SEASON 2, EPISODE 8)
We know Randall is prone to getting misty, but when his skittish foster daughter allows him to hug her goodbye, can you blame the man for tearing up?
JACK DIES (SEASON 2, EPISODE 14)
Rebecca's disbelief that her husband has died while she was at the hospital's vending machine turns to shock in real time. In a series full of heartbreaking moments, this one stands out as particularly gutting.
BETH'S BACKSTORY (SEASON 3, EPISODE 13)
Yes, Susan Kelechi Watson's dancing was gorgeous. But the story of Beth's father, what he meant to her and how her life was upended when he passed still sticks with us.
REBECCA SINGS, JACK REACTS (SEASON 3, EPISODE 7)
Jack's inability to hold back his post-Vietnam grief any longer, coupled with Rebecca's gentle acceptance of his reluctance to talk about what's bothering him, sets the tone for the rest of their relationship — all within the space of a song.
RANDALL SWIMS WITH THE SPIRIT OF HIS BIRTH MOTHER (SEASON 5, EPISODE 6)
Randall gets emotionally (and, um, actually) naked and slips into the river to commune with the ghost of Laurel, his birth mother whose shame over the circumstances of their parting kept her away from him his entire life.
JACK'S MOTHER DIES (SEASON 6, EPISODE 4)
"I don't have a mom anymore" is all Jack can get out before the sobs — and the reality that his mother has died — overtake him.
MIGUEL REALIZES HE CAN NO LONGER CARE FOR REBECCA (SEASON 6, EPISODE 15)
Sure, the moment we learn that Miguel has passed away is a tough one. But this scene, in which an elderly Miguel has to face the fact that he can no longer be Rebecca's sole caregiver, destroyed us, too. Just look at his face!
REBECCA RIDES THE TRAIN (SEASON 6, EPISODE 17)
If you made it all the way to the caboose without curling into the fetal position, you're a stronger This Is Us fan than we are.
