The Winchesters: 12 Supernatural Characters Who Should Visit Spinoff
The Winchesters already features three characters familiar to Supernatural fans — Mary, John and Dean — so what's 12 more?
On the heels of the news that Gil McKinney will reprise his role as Henry Winchester on The CW's prequel spinoff (airing Tuesdays at 8/7c), we here at TVLine put on our thinking caps and came up with some other characters from the mothership series that we'd love to see on the offshoot.
Many a supernatural and celestial being has close ties to the story of John and Mary Winchester's past, and thanks to the magic of time travel and the fact that several of these characters are ageless wonders (or evils), it's not out of the realm of possibility that folks like Dean and Sam's angel pal Castiel or the demon Azazel could visit the show. We even came up with a couple of Supernatural vets who could possibly be responsible for The Winchesters' different recollection of how John and Mary met, and how he learned about the world of demons and hunting.
Plus, there's a few fan-favorite human hunters who were around in 1972, when the spinoff is set, and thus could appear in young incarnations.
Note: Since it's already been announced that Henry Winchester and Samuel Campbell (played by Tom Welling) are set to appear, we didn't include other obvious immediate family members like Deanna Campbell among our selections.
Review TVLine's list below, then hit the comments to tell us which Supernatural character you'd most like to see on The Winchesters!
Abaddon
With Henry Winchester appearing in an upcoming episode, it would make sense for Abaddon to also surface on the spinoff, given her close ties to the Men of Letters and John's father. She infiltrated the group in 1958, killing almost all of their members, and came after Henry when he time-traveled to 2013 on Supernatural.
Castiel
Cas is the one who sent Dean back to Lawrence, Kansas, circa 1973 in Season 4's "In the Beginning," which revealed that — twist! — Mary came from a family of hunters. So it wouldn't be the first time the angel has been a part of John and Mary's past. And with his ability to time travel, we could see an incarnation of Castiel from any time, even one from before we (and Dean) first met him.
Rowena
How fun would it be if the centuries-old witch crossed paths with, say, rare book emporium owner Ada in the '70s in her quest to regain her lost power base during her MIA days? And while we're talking about Rowena...
Crowley
Perhaps Rowena's son Crowley was also around in 1972 and tempted one of the new Scooby gang members to make a deal during his time as a crossroads demon?
Azazel
The infamous yellow-eyed demon, who was later identified as Azazel, is of course responsible for Mary's death in the Supernatural pilot, which set John on a course to discover the world of demons and hunting. The episode "In the Beginning" later revealed that Mary made a deal with Azazel in 1973: John's life in exchange for permission to enter her house in 10 years. The Winchesters is playing with that history, potentially allowing for the demon who is so central to their family mythology to enter young Mary and John's lives in a different, earlier way — and sporting a different meat suit?
Bobby and Rufus
The former hunting duo were alive in the early '70s and have a storied history: Rufus introduced Bobby to the world of the supernatural after he exorcised the demon possessing Bobby's wife Karen and helped cover up her death. The pair went on to hunt together for many years until a hunt-gone-wrong led them to not speak to each other for 15 years. If that's not territory rife with storytelling opportunities to introduce a young Rufus and Bobby in the prequel series, we don't know what is!
Cupid
The Winchesters is the love story of John and Mary, and Cupid is the one who told their son Dean in a Season 5 episode of Supernatural that he insured their union, which was a top priority for the bigwigs upstairs in Heaven. "They couldn't stand each other at first. But when we were done with them — perfect couple," Cupid said. Could the angel be messing with John and Mary again?
Chuck
All powerful, able to bend reality and up to no good? Yeah, sounds like Supernatural's God could be behind the distortion of John and Mary's past.
Jack
Or maybe Heaven's new God has reset the timeline to give John and Mary a do-over?
Ellen Harvelle
Let's just ignore for a second the fact that the Harvelle's Roadhouse owner (pictured left) didn't meet John until the '90s, when her husband Bill hunted with the Winchester, according to Supernatural. With so much unexplored history between Ellen and John — she described him as "like family once" — and the fraught circumstances surrounding Bill's death during a hunt with John, there's a lot of rich, underlying future tension for The Winchesters to play with.
Sam Winchester
We already saw Dean Winchester in the spinoff's series premiere, hanging out... wherever he is. So what's to say Sam is not also there?
