TVLINE | When we last saw David, he was walking out of therapy after breaking things off with Darlene. At the time, though, it was established that he’d moved back to Lanford to take a more active role in his kids’ lives, which he feasibly could’ve been doing off screen. So, why the heel turn? Why declare David a deadbeat?
HELFORD | You know, we’re approaching the grand bow of the show, maybe next season or whatever, and there’s only so long we can go [without seeing David]. And Johnny is just too busy. We love him, and he would love to be doing stuff with us, but it just hasn’t worked out scheduling wise. And Dave, you can address the relationship with Ben…
CAPLAN | There are a couple of things in play here: One of the things we’re implying is that zebras don’t change their stripes; it’s one thing to talk a big game, and it’s another thing to show up, which is what parenting is about. You’ve got to be there, and you’ve got to show up, and what we’re saying is that David didn’t come through for [Mark] and Ben did. With all of the complications of being a Conner, Ben stepped up. Sometimes as a kid, when you’ve got a family that’s reconstituted, your eyes are not in the right place, and that’s what this episode is about.
HELFORD | It really felt like we were doing a disservice to the character of Ben, as well, to not have [Ben and Mark] bond over this thing that he has done. He built a house for the family, he [convinced] Darlene to take that job and get Mark into college… We felt it was a major turning point that was required, so we went for it.
TVLINE | Johnny took a step back from acting after The Big Bang Theory ended in 2019, but you did manage to get him for a pair of Season 2 episodes. Have there been subsequent attempts to get him back here and there?
HELFORD | Oh yeah! He and Sara [Gilbert] are very close, so on occasion we would say, “Hey, come on out!” We even approached him for this episode, to be honest with you. It was just one of those things where it didn’t work out — and like you say, he’s certainly taking a step away, taking a breather, and we understand that. But we have to deal with what’s going on in the Conners’ lives, so we just decided this was the time [to address David’s absence]. But we’ve been in touch with him, and it has always been cordial.
CAPLAN | The last time Johnny was here, he really went out of his way to say how much he loved not only the legacy of the show, but what we’re doing with The Conners. He’s a big fan, and he loved being on the show. But real life tends to take priority, and if he needs to step away, we all respect that.
I also think David’s backstory is important to remember here. His parents abandoned him. As much as someone who went through that wants to be different from their parents, these things are often cyclical. I’ve seen it in real life. David’s complicated relationship with Darlene and the rest of the Conners probably makes it difficult for him to be there for his kids, so he does what’s easiest: exactly what his parents did to him.
While I’m sad for the David we knew in Roseanne, I do think this is a logical progression for the character, even if it’s not one I would have chosen for him. I would have been totally fine with him being a good dad off screen, but I understand why the writers see an ‘expiration date’ for that kind of thing.
It’s disappointing, for sure. David was always one of my favorite characters in Roseanne. Personally, I don’t think the “expiration date” on off-screen relationships is true, but that’s me.
Hopefully, whenever the show ends Johnny will be willing to come back, and everything with David can get sorted.
Thought this was the best episode of the season. Loved it.
It really was.
Finally took care of the elephant in the room regarding David/Johnny’s involvement , or lack of in the show.
Like he needs to even ACT – he’s a freakin’ millionaire with his own production company.
I was taken aback when i realized Mark and Harris dont even have davids last name. Ihope theres no bad blood with Johnny Galecki as david was one favorite characters on the orginal.
david took the conners last name when they got married. So the kids are conners as well.
When they announced her name at “graduation,” they said Harris Conner-Healy. So wouldn’t Mark be Mark Conner-Healy?
for anyone who has watched Guardians volume 2, i ponder if Mark did end up watching it and was inspired
I don’t know why but it saddens me how much David’s character has changed from how he was on Roseanne. DJ’s wife isn’t in the picture either, but we are shown her being a loving, supportive mom when she is. I understand Johnny has other commitments but it almost seems like there’s a bitterness there towards the actor that transfers towards the character in a way that there’s not even towards Roseanne herself. So sad.
I agree. Davis was a caring, emotionally involved character and to change that now seems to only serve to make Darlene and Ben saints. He didn’t have to appear , but mentions and phone calls could have salvaged his humanity and still made Darlene a hero.
I genuinely don’t see any bitterness for the actor. They are telling a story, and with the actor not available, the absentee father story is more interesting than just telling the audience that he’s been around off-screen. If Galecki is ever available to come back, I’m sure they’d be happy to write that story (I can imagine Mark being happy to see his dad and Harris not wanting to talk to him).
I think it was terribly unfair to the fans to tease the possibility of finally seeing David again, only to spend the episode bashing him. Rude.
It really undermines the scenes with Ben and Mark, because it makes it feel like the show thinks the only reason to like Ben is if we hate David. And that’s not fair to anyone.
I don’t see why the show has to end next season. The ratings are strong and there’s still a lot of storyline that can happen, especially with Darlene’s kids.
Why this is one of the many reasons i stopped watching
I just realized that Lanford is a combination of (producers) Dave Caplan and Bruce Helford’s last names!
Purely a coincidence. Neither worked on Roseanne when the series first started. Helford joined midway through the original run; Caplan was brought on for the revival.
I think it was a crappy way to treat a legacy character They did have to make David a totally deadbeat of a father. He could have been there off screen. Just because Johnny was not wanting to commit to the show in any firm way. First because he had BBT and then in the aftermath. Yes, David had a hard down life. And it a very confusing situation given how close he was to the Conner family. You would think with the loss of his brother, that he would want to be in his kids life. In some fashion. They could have had him involved, just unseen. Darlene could have been the main force. But it’s totally disrespecting the character as we knew him. Even if he’s now a adult. And sometimes you change from when you are a teenager. Given they had him, trying to be there. Seems because they could not get Johnny to come back. They went the easy route.
Yeah, I really hate the character assassination they did for David. I don’t for one minute buy this deadbeat dad stuff. There is no reason he couldn’t have been mentioned as being in their lives in passing. It’s nothing like Norm or Niles’ wives since David is an established character. “Oh yeah, I’ll let dad know when I see him tonight.” Bam, easy.
I think the reasoning they gave for why they went this way is garbage. I just don’t get it.
David is the best example of the writers not truly knowing the characters they’ve written.
None of the classic characters feel that much like the older versions of the og show.
David would never be an absentee parent after his abandonment.
Darlene would NEVER be either someone as toxic as BEN. He’s so dismissive of her when her needs don’t align with his.
The Darlene love life focus ruined the revival. Entirely mishandled.
“Love the SHOW!”
A GREAT SEASON FINALE!
I love the way how the Connors were able to celebrate (Through the Loving idea of both Mark, and Louise) Their graduations with a walk down getting their diplomas, as well as being among family to do so.. SO AMAZING!
I hope to see a season 6.. Please don’t let this be the last.. just My Thoughts
When Dan was talking to Louise about the family not having special graduations, he didn’t mention Darlene, even though she went to art school without graduating from high school that we never saw her graduate from. But what about DJ, didn’t he eventually graduate from high school before he joined the army?
It’s about time this was addressed. We’ve been wondering why haven’t they asked ‘David about chipping in for Mark’s college. Ben is fantastic. I think adding Jay has been one of the best casting decisions they have done.
The Conners in an overated trash sitcom…
