Ghosts EPs Preview Season 2's Alberta Murder Mystery, New (Wandering!) Spirit And A Slow-Burn Love

Woodstone Bed & Breakfast is officially open for business when Ghosts returns for Season 2 this Thursday (CBS, 8:30/7:30c), but more than just Sam and Jay's B&B is opening up.

The breakout hit comedy is expanding its world in its sophomore season, delving into its ghostly mythology and rules, as well as some new spirits, including one who has found a way around being tied to her place of death! "We're going to meet a ghost can go around the world, but is bound to this car that her death is related to," co-showrunner Joe Port tells TVLine.

And as Sam and Jay's business gets off the ground, viewers will also see more of their prickly neighbors, the Farnsbys, and the housewife ghost that haunts their property. "We're going to learn more about her, Judy, played by Lindsey Broad," Port shares. As if that's not enough undead action, "we're going to learn more about another ghost that lives there and its connection to one of our ghosts."

But of course, the ghosts that fans have come to know and love are the ones who've become Sam and Jay's family, and Season 2 will give each a chance to shine. From Isaac's new relationship to Flower's grizzly death to Alberta's long-awaited flashback episode, there's plenty to look forward to, co-showrunners Joe Port and Joe Wiseman preview below.

A Burgeoning Love

After finally admitting that he has feelings for Nigel, Season 2 begins with Isaac and the British soldier "dipping their toes into the water of a relationship together," Port shares. "That's a main story that we're following is these former enemies now turned romantic partners each getting their first chance, in 250 years, to have a relationship."

As for the pair's very long-awaited first kiss, "we definitely want that to be a special moment," Wiseman says, noting that Isaac and Nigel's romance is "a slower burn. It's a new-ish situation for them, and they're kind of feeling it out."

Alberta Gets the Spotlight

Episode 2, titled "Alberta's Podcast," kicks off a murder mystery as the Prohibition era singer takes center stage. "We finally get to see flashbacks to when she was alive and back in the jazz clubs," Wiseman previews. "We get to learn a little bit about how she got her big break. We know she was murdered from last season, but we don't know who. So one thing we're trying to do this season is sort of sprinkle in some suspects and create a little bit of a mystery, and we start doing that in this episode."

Death Becomes Them

Flower has talked plenty about the strange circumstances surrounding her demise, and in Season 2, "we're going to see Flower's death," Port reveals. And yes, Gilmore Girls vet Rose Abdoo's guest spot as the producer of a show called Dumb Deaths is related to that storyline. (Just don't expect an actual bear to be part of it. "There was concern that a real bear was dangerous," Port deadpans.)

Plus, "we're going to delve into a little bit more of the circumstances surrounding Pete's death and some of the unknown, unexplored causes of it," the EP adds. Meanwhile, Hetty and Sas' deaths "are the two that we haven't revealed yet, so we're discussing those."

Happy Holidays

Following last season's Halloween episode, the show will return to the spooky holiday to "play with the idea that, on Halloween, some of the boundaries between the living and dead can be thinned," Wiseman previews, adding that he and Port "were looking at it as an opportunity to sort of take a big, fun swing."

As for the winter holiday season, the show will air a two-parter about Christmas at Woodstone. "We just felt like Sam would be obsessed with Christmas, and she's kind of into holidays in general," Port describes. "So the network suggested the two-parter, and we were really excited that they wanted to give us the time and space to do that, because we kind of made it our own Hallmark Christmas movie."

And of course, Trevor is Jewish, so viewers can also expect "an attempted Hanukkah miracle," Port teases.

B&Bing, BRB

While the season opener is heavily focused on Sam and Jay's second first guests, don't expect their B&B endeavor to overwhelm the storylines. "We have an arc where they hire an assistant to help them run the business. So we are going to be dealing with the business, but we didn't want to make that, like, suddenly the thrust of the show," Wiseman says. "The same way them renovating the house last year was sort of like a constant thing that was kind of going on behind the scenes, them running the B&B will be similar."

Jay's Cult-y Friend

The Other Two's Drew Tarver guest-stars in the Oct. 13 episode, in which "Sam becomes alarmed when the ghosts suggest Jay's new friends may be part of a cult, run by a charismatic leader named Micah (played by Tarver)," per the official description. Micah befriends Jay during a pickup basketball game, after which he takes advantage of Jay's desire to make some new pals and "ensnares Jay and Sam in his 'vitality' patch scheme, threatening their financial future."

(Fun fact: Tarver and Ghosts star Brandon Scott Jones, aka Isaac, play friends on The Other Two. Jones also served as a co-producer and writer on Season 2 of the HBO Max comedy.)
