In the memoir Will, which was published Nov. 9, Smith reveals the moment he believes Fresh Prince jumped the shark — and it’s probably not the episode you’d expect him to pick.
“The storylines were becoming increasingly hokey and it was difficult to maintain the ‘Freshness,'” Smith writes, per EW. “Anyone who has ever been on a sitcom can tell you the episode in which their show jumped the shark. Ours was Season 5, Episode 15, ‘Bullets Over Bel-Air,’ the one in which I got shot and Carlton started carrying a gun.”
The aforementioned episode sees Will and Carlton are robbed at gunpoint. While Will recuperates in the hospital, Carlton goes out and buys a gun, in order to protect himself in the future. But when Will discovers that Carlton is carrying, he tearfully demands that his cousin forfeit his weapon so no one else gets hurt. Watch the dramatic scene below:
