Emmy Nominations, Fun Facts: Mighty Maya Rudolph, One S--Ty Contender, Network Dramas Go Bust And More

As nominations for the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards continue to be processed, TVLine drills down to take a look at some of the quieter (and sometimes fun) trends.

The numbers we already know? HBO's Watchmen led the TV pack with 26 total nominations, followed by Amazon's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (with 20), Netflix's Ozark and HBO's Succession (which amassed 18 apiece).

Going by outlet, Netflix reclaimed bragging rights this year with a Primetime Emmys record of 160 (!) total nominations to HBO's 107.  Rounding out the Top 5 were NBC (47), ABC (36) and FX (33). Among new streamers, Disney+ racked up 19 nominations to Apple TV+'s 18 and Quibi's 10.

But again, you know all that. (We told you just this morning!) So let's take a look at some other fun facts and figures to be gleaned from this year's contenders....

IT'S AN HONOR TO BE MULTI-NOMINATED

Yes, Sterling K. Brown (for This Is Us and Mrs. Maisel), Jason Bateman (Ozark and The Outsider) and Giancarlo Esposito (Better Call Saul and The Mandalorian) each landed in two Emmy races.

Maya Rudolph, however, amassed three individual achievement nominations, for guesting on SNL, guesting on The Good Place and voicing Big Mouth's Connie the Hormone Monstress. Similarly, Schitt's Creek's Dan Levy is nommed for supporting actor, writing, and directing (with Andrew Cividino), and as one of the EPs for a Best Comedy contender.

SHE NAILED IT

Nicole Byer, for her work lording over those who Nailed It! (or not) in Netflix's bake-off, became the first Black woman to be Emmy-nominated for Outstanding Host of a Reality or Competition Program.

NO GENERATION GAP HERE

Both Jovan Adepo and Louis Gossett Jr. earned Supporting Actor in a Limited Series nods for their respective turns as Watchmen's younger and old Will Reeves.

GOING FOR THE (OTHER) GOLD

A total of five Academy Award winners are looking at their first-ever Emmy nominations: Cate Blanchett (for Mrs. America), Lupita Nyong'o (as a narrator of Discovery's Serengeti), Taika Waititi (for voicing The Mandalorian's IG-11), Octavia Spencer (Self Made) and Christoph Waltz (Quibi's Most Dangerous Game).

FREE-TV FREEFALL?

With This Is Us pushed out of this year's Best Drama mix, for the first time ever no over-the-air series (that's broadcast-TV plus PBS) is nominated for the Emmys' most prestigious prize.

For the first time. Ever.

GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN, PART 1

The late Fred Willard earned his fifth career Guest Actor in a Comedy nomination, and his second for Modern Family, for playing the ABC sitcom's Frank Dunphy. Also, the late Lynn Shelton earned a nod for one of the four Little Fires Everywhere episodes she directed, the finale titled "Find A Way."

GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN, PART 2

Out of the shows that were eligible for their final season, Schitt's Creek dominated with 15 total nods, followed by The Good Place's six, Will & Grace's five and Modern Family's three. How to Get Away With Murder, Orange Is the New Black and BoJack Horseman were among the final-season shows that grabbed one final nomination.

LESS THAN SUPER

Though HBO's Watchmen led the entire TV pack with 26 total nominations, only one other comic books-based series, Amazon's The Boys, netted even a single nod (for Outstanding Sound Editing). And before you ask: This year's drama stunt nominations went to The Blacklist, The Mandalorian, The Rookie, S.W.A.T. and Stranger Things.

MUSICAL S--T HAPPENS!

Last Week Tonight With John Oliver's "Eat [S--t], Bob" — a song aimed at the coal tycoon who filed a suit against the show, then dropped it, after Oliver referred to him as a "geriatric Dr. Evil" — is up for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics.

LIVE AND KICKING

Already the Primetime Emmys' most-nominated TV program, NBC's Saturday Night Live grew its grand total to 285 lifetime nods, by adding another 15 this year.

ODDLY UN-MARVELOUS

For the second year in a row, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel's tsunami of Emmy nods (20, this time around) did not include any for that which co-creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino are best known: writing.

DARE TO DREAM!

Once again proving that some dreams do come true, 45 of TVLine's 103 Dream Emmy Nominees wound up landing on the Academy's short list. (Like last year, that is just about half! We'll take it.)
