Grey’s Anatomy fans may want to put off calling time-of-death on Meredith and Nick’s relationship. Although things looked bleak for the estranged couple when last they spoke — does it get any worse than your girlfriend pretending she hasn’t heard you say you love her? — it ain’t over till it’s over, showrunner Krista Vernoff teased to TVLine on the ABC drama’s recent PaleyFest red carpet.
Although the EP wouldn’t get into specifics, “what I can say is that I still have hope for them as a couple,” she offered. “I think there’s a lot of good there, and fans will have to wait and see” how — and if — they resolve their issues.
We won’t have to wait too terribly long, either. Vernoff hinted that we’d have a sense of where Meredith and Nick’s relationship is headed by the end of Season 19, which wraps on Thursday, May 18, with a two-hour finale marked by Ellen Pompeo’s first post-series-regular appearance. (Leading man Scott Speedman continues to recur.) “I don’t believe in closure as a rule, in life or in storytelling. I think it’s a misnomer,” Vernoff said. “But I think there will be [some]” for Drs. Grey and Marsh.
Certainly, there will be some closure for Vernoff when Season 19 concludes: After six years at the helm, she’s stepping down and leaving her post in Season 20 to Meg Marinis, who has been with the show since Season 3 (and has been an EP since Season 15). Also on her way out is Kelly McCreary, who after nine seasons will last air in a series-regular capacity as Maggie in the Thursday, April 13, episode. Like Pompeo, she is is expected to continue to make guest appearances now and again. (With reporting by Scott Huver)
So, are you rooting for Meredith and Nick to get to ride off into the sunset together? Hit the comments with your hopes for their tumultuous romance.
i can’t imagine people are still holding out hope for them. she’s treated him terribly, over and over again. and then characters still tell nick she’s “worth it”. no, she’s not. and it’s a shame, because meredith used to be an amazing, powerful character. i don’t recognize this person anymore.
After the way she treated him in her last episode, these are not characters who belong together. I was so annoyed by Maggie telling him to stick it out because he makes Meredith happy, like his own feelings don’t matter.
I loved.Nick and Meredith together in S14, E 17. Amazing chemistry. I was so happy they finally got together. However, between Pompeos exit and the writers, they managed to take what should and could have been an amazing storyline and come close to destroying it. Scott is great on the show and iI hope they beef up his storyline. I’d still like to for them to get back together in a meaningful way, but sadly, dont trust Pompeo to appear enough to make that possible
I really hope they can work it out.
Meredith has been terrible to him, but the love is still there.
So they will need a new head of Cardiology – I know it won’t happen but wouldn’t it be great to see Christina Yang again?
Teddy’s a cardio surgeon, she could step back into the role in addition to being Chief.
—
But more likely Winston will lose a wife and replace her as Cardio Chief.
—
I imagine Owen becoming Residency Director (assuming Nick moves to Boston). He’s a great teacher and would fill the role nicely.
—
As for bringing back former surgeons — there are two who would work with the new “underdog mentality” the hospital has going: Alex Karev (widower Chief of Peds) and April Kepner (divorcée Chief of Trauma).
Since when is Alex a widower?
In my writer’s room Alex will become a widower. Izzie is living with cancer (like Catherine) and it can flare up again anytime.
Keep Nick & let Meredith go & use him in more episodes!! He’s a good character & better without Meredith.
Let it go! Why does Meredith need a man? She has a full life with friends, her kids, her work. Please let us show a female character comfortable enough with herself that she does not need a partner.
Then let Nick find his great love and continue running the Grey Sloan residency program.
Sounds good to me, no need to drop Nick’s character from the show.
Maybe she doesn’t *need* a man, but they sure can be handy to have around sometimes.
Agreed.
Seriously. Why does she have to be in a relationship?(Especially ones that’s as dull as dishwater! She doesn’t even seem to want to be in a relationship and quite content with her lot.)
Please Greys show us that a woman doesn’t need to be in a relationship to be considered successful.
Single does not always mean lonely or incomplete.
Let it go 🎶.
I still say after Merideth passes away she meets Derek on the beach and they walk away together..after all Derek did tell he ” I’ll be here “
He can do soooo much better. She treats him so badly.
I really liked the potential for them. When he showed up the other season, I was excited.
They ruined it. (Much like they brought in the Irish guy and then ruined that.)
The whole Meredith exit was poorly done.
I’ve been watching since the first episode and I can’t stand the old school characters anymore and don’t like the new ones: I feel like the writers just the people?
After 19 seasons, I’m fine just reading a recap to keep a pulse in case something interesting happens.
Right on the dot! I feel the same just reading recaps to see if there’s anything that’s pops up.
That man ghosted her for 6 months and told her he wanted her to put in all the effort into their relationship and when she does he don’t do anything. Meredith deserves someone better for her and Derek’s kids then Nick. He needs to just go back to Minnesota and get on with his life.
The real question is why would he even still be interested after the way she treated him? Have some self respect, man!
I love them as a couple. I hope they go the distance even with Mer not on the show
He deserves a hell of a lot better than someone who’s nearing 50 but can’t bother being emotionally mature. Pretending not to hear someone after you got mad they didn’t say ily when you wanted is a 13 year olds behavior.
But since Meredith is “the sun” & apparently can do no wrong, everyone is supposed to be falling to her feet. I guess he’ll crawl back to her.
I really wished her and Riggs were together tbh
Meredith is too self-centered. Nick should stay far away from her unless his #1 goal is to be her doormat.
Heck NO!!! I did not like them together in the first place. No offense to the actor playing Nick, but his character is sooooooo not for Meredith. I have watched Grey’s from the beginning, but stoped when this “relationship” happened. They really messed with this one
I think Griggs was the man for meridith, they had real chemistry. He was strong cheeky and made her laugh and sexy with it.
