Better keep those defibrillator paddles charged, Grey’s Anatomy fans. The ABC drama’s Season 19 sendoff is going to be a doozy, Kevin McKidd told TVLine at the show’s recent PaleyFest sit-down. “It’s a two-hour finale this year, and I’m directing the first hour of that. It’s going to be a big one.”
Not only does OG Ellen Pompeo return for her first post-series-regular appearance as Meredith — perhaps to tie up loose ends with Scott Speedman’s Nick? — but some major s—t goes down. So on one hand, since McKidd’s longtime castmate is scrubbing in and “the place isn’t the same without her… it’s celebratory,” said the vet, who’s played Owen since Season 5.
But on the other, “it’s also quite shocking. There are going to be some things in it that people are going to be kind of surprised and shocked at.” Not to mention, apparently, heartbroken over; just look at what Camilla Luddington (Jo) tweeted on April 4.

For his part, McKidd is only too delighted that the Thursday, May 18, season ender (starting at 9/8) has been supersized. “Sometimes we do a two-hour finale, sometimes we don’t,” he noted. “I’ve directed the first hour of the two-hour finales before, so this isn’t a new feeling for me, but it’s always fun because I get to collaborate with the [other director, in this case] the legend Debbie Allen,” the EP who also recurs as Catherine. “Our episodes are connected. So we very much have to work together to get those episodes working in tandem and in concert with each other. So that’s a really fun side of a two-hour finale.” (With reporting by Scott Huver)

about time for a dramatic, Life+death greys season finale! The Last was season 11. Sing Me in 😜🥰
Maybe they’ll finally kill off Owen?
They better not!
We can only hope.
Oh please I’d love nothing more
I think Grey’s has hurt and/or killed doctors too much. Pretty much every season someone is between life or death, sometimes multiple people. I wish they had dramatic finales that were about the patients. If they are going to kill someone off, I guess it’s Catherine and I suppose it’s only fitting Debbie Allen directs her own demise.
They haven’t had a doctor in a life-or-death situation in a finale for ages?
– Season 18 was all about the resident program closing + the blood shortage
– Season 17 was the covid finale, Maggie’s wedding
– Season 16 was Teddy being caught cheating on Owen + him canceling the wedding
– Season 15 was the fog, no doctors in danger
– Season 14 was Jo & Alex’s wedding…
The last time we had a ‘disaster’ finale with a doctor in danger was season 13, with Steph in the fire.
Agreed and the last time we actually had a doctor die in a finale was Lexie back in season 8
DeLuca was killed off in Season 17
In most of season 18 Meredith Grey was infected with co-vid and almost died. Do you watch all of the episodes or only the ones you can catch? I prerecord the show I like because I used to miss shows when working nights.
That was sean 17
perhaps not in the season finale, but Owen was between life and death in the mid-season finale last season. Deluca died in the season before and Meredith was in coma the whole season… The list goes on. Most doctors in this hospital has been on the brink of death multiple times. It’s just tiring at this point.
Deluca died while Meredith was in the coma. Deluca came to the beach and met up with his mom.
Derek isn’t really dead?
I think Catherine will die
I think you’re right.
I think they need to show Christina and Maribeth again every now and I hope it never goes off the air
I hate it when they put out teasers like this, you either end up getting let down after all of the hype or they do something that makes you wonder why you watched in the first place. I’ve watched every show since the beginning and even though they were renewed for season 20, I still can’t see how this show is going to be after the title characters exit from the show. I hope they talked Ellen Pompeo into doing a few more shows for season 20, that would work, but a complete exodus of her character will end this show, eventually anyway. Just my opinion.
I read somewhere that she’s thinking of coming back because of one writer leaving. She wanted to leave season 14 because that writer came back. I listened to her prod cast and she did say she wanted to leave season 14 . I’m thinking her and that writer don’t get along. I can’t remember where I read it but yeah Ellen now is thinking of coming back for season 20🤷♀️
The Space Needle falls on the hospital? A WA State ferry sinks with hospital staff on board for a retreat?
The hospital falls on the Space Needle. He said it’s “shocking.”
This should be Series Finale. The Show as ran it course. It is time to have it c0me to a rest
I hope Jo is leaving. Her character became annoying and sometimes she is a surgeon and other OB just stick with one and the terrible way she treats Levi when she takes her anger on him. and with all this hype, wish the finale doesn’t disappoint.
Disagree. She’s a great character and there’s symbolism behind why she changed specialties but Bailey didn’t want to lose her as a surgical resident so they said she could do both.
It’s weird the only two residents left from earlier are the white actors Jo(season 9) and Levi (season 14) and there’s Helm too but the Asian resident had to leave.
Don’t go there Meghan Markle! The only two characters left from the first season are both black. In my opinion the show has been as much about Bailey and Richard as it’s been about Meredith.
Well “Owen” is over here in the UK 🇬🇧 taking part in a different show altogether so maybe the writers will kill him off in Greys.
Final?? What they just got back from Christmas Break?
I have watched Grey’s Anatomy since the beginning but I am so disappointed. This show has gone way too political. It’s all about abortion rights and gay or transgender story lines. Very disappointed. I am not going to watch anymore.
Bring back Christina… there is no way saying Goodbye to Meredith without her… she is and will always be her person 🫂
