Like Shania Twain and Brad Pitt, the Oscars don’t impress Amandla Stenberg much. “It’s smaller than I imagined,” the actress told Ryan Seacrest. “I think TV makes things look bigger. It’s also calmer than I thought it would be.”
GAME OF TEASES
This is the face Emilia Clarke made when Ryan Seacrest asked her how she thinks fans will react to Game of Thrones’ upcoming final season. “It’s going to be huge,” she promised. “It took us a very long time to shoot for a very good reason.” In a word, she promises “shock.”
THE MOTHER OF ALL SNUBS
Regina King’s mom was more than happy to let her daughter enjoy the spotlight to herself. No, really, she straight-up rejected Ryan Seacrest when he tried to wrangle her into an interview — and we kind of love her for it.
PREGNANT PAUSE
Ryan Seacrest was caught more than a little off-guard when Richard E. Grant told the robotic reporter that he and co-star Melissa McCarthy are expecting twins in August. Sensing not a whiff of humor, Seacrest asked Grant to clarify his statement before officially confirming that it was, in fact, a joke. (Comedy!)
WHOSE STORY IS IT, ANYWAY?
Speaking with Ryan Seacrest, BlacKkKlansman director Spike Lee revealed the one hesitation he had about taking on the story of a black man who infiltrates the Ku Klux Klan: “Didn’t Dave Chapelle already do this?”
YOU DOWN WITH RBG?
Nominated for a song she wrote for RGB, Diane Warren brought a miniature version of her muse along for the ride. That said, we aren’t sure Ruth Bader Ginsburg would approve of Warren’s outlook: “Lady Gaga’s going to win. I’m just happy to be here.”
INCOGNITO COUPLE
Honestly, we’re not sure who we had more difficulty recognizing, Leslie Bibb as a brunette or Sam Rockwell without hair.
WHAT IS THIS, THE SHORTY AWARDS?
“Thanks for making me look short,” Ryan Seacrest told Nicholas Hoult and Joe Alwyn — as if he needed any help. (Somewhere, Joel McHale is cackling.)
HEELS AND FEELS
Lest you doubt that the women of Saturday Night Live always have each other’s backs, know that Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Maya Rudolph went into their gig presenting at the Oscars with a single mentality: “If one falls, all fall.”
WHAT’S COOKING?
A Star Is Born’s Sam Elliott was more than happy to talk about how Bradley Cooper wooed him over a home cooked dinner, but Ryan Seacrest apparently went too far by asking what was on the menu. “I’m not going to tell you what he cooked,” Elliott replied. (Yikes.)
AMERICAN IDOL REUNION, ANYONE?
Not only was it great to see Ryan Seacrest and Adam Lambert together again, but Lambert — who’s opening the Oscars singing with Queen — deserves extra points for drawing this gloriously cheesy connection between his band and the big night: “We are the champions, you know? Everyone in the audience tonight worked really hard … and we all deserve to be there.”
(Follow-up: Adam Lambert apparently saved all his good quotes for his interview with ABC, telling Ashley Graham that his cameo in Bohemian Rhapsody was “repping all gay temptation.”)
LAST HOST STANDING
You thought he didn’t exist, but we found him: the last remaining actor in Hollywood willing to host the Oscars. “If they’re still looking for a host, I’m available — I’m sitting in Mezzanine 3,” Green Book’s Sebastian Maniscalco told Giuliana Rancic.
STEP RIGHT UP
Always a gentlemen, Bradley Cooper apologized for stepping on Maria Menounos’ dress as they started their interview — not that he needed to. “You can step on my dress anyway,” she informed him. (Good to know?)
