Supergirl Books ‘Supergirl’: Smallville Vet Laura Vandervoort Cast as Indigo — Plus, How Young Superman Appears!
Supergirl is once again flexing its meta muscles.
Laura Vandervoort, who famously portrayed Kara Zor-El on The WB’s Smallville, will recur on CBS’ new drama as DC Comics character Indigo, the network announced Monday. She’ll first appear in Episode 15.
Supergirl‘s Indigo is described as a “living, strong-willed supercomputer that was sentenced to Fort Rozz after turning against the people of Krypton. Now on Earth, Indigo will let nothing stand in her way.”
“[Indigo] looks badass,” adds executive producer Andrew Kreisberg. “She’s going to look awesome. And she definitely won’t look just like Laura. … Being one aspect of the Brainiac program, she comes in through computers, so Winn is actively involved in that episode. She was one of the Fort Rozz prisoners, so how she got there and what she’s been doing on Earth is part of the surprise of the episode
Vandervoort had been eyed for several roles on Supergirl, but scheduling conflicts with her Syfy drama Bitten prevented her from heading to National City — until now.
Additionally, Jeff Branson (The Young and the Restless) will recur as DC Comics character Master Jailer. Once the “forceful and unrelenting jail guard on Fort Rozz,” his new Earthly mission is to “brutally” recapture all of the escapees.
It was also announced that an upcoming episode will offer a riff on the classic Superman comics tale “For the Man Who Has Everything,” where Kara wakes up on an intact idyllic Krypton with no idea how she got there.
“There was something about that story that to me was even more resonant for [Kara],” Kreisberg says, ” because for Superman it was a wish for something he never had. But for her, she wants something back that was taken from her.” (Cue the previously teased casting of a Young Kal-El.)

Wow, really? This is like having Tom Welling show up in one of these Cavill Superman movies as some lame sidekick.
Indigo is also known as Brainiac 8, so they’re most likely using her to bring in a female version of Brainiac on the show. So she’s more than a sidekick, she’s most likely going to be portrayed as a big bad in the same vein as Brainiac. It’s what the show does.
“It was revealed in Teen Titans (vol. 3) #24 that Indigo is actually Brainiac 8, and every bit the ruthless, inhuman villain that previous Brainiacs were. Indigo as the Outsiders knew her is essentially a subprogram, designed by Brainiac 8’s “grandfather”, Brainiac 6, to endear her to the superhero community.
Brainiac 8 had been sent back in time to kill Donna Troy, because a living Donna would negate Coluan domination over the “organics” after the Infinite Crisis events. After a beating by the combined forces of Teen Titans and Outsiders, in Outsiders (vol. 3) #25, the Indigo persona wrests control from Brainiac 8, and reveals herself to be a genuine personality. Weeping, she begs Shift to kill her before the Brainac 8 persona could harm the people she loves. Laura has a full time gig on “Bitten” I doubt they can get her for more than a few episodes… not enough time for her to be developed into a big bad. I did read that Titans storyline you reference too… not one of the better ones.
She’s definitely playing a villain of weight going by the above description. The suggestion that she spends a lot of time as a program suggests that she’ll mostly be a voice or head on a screen, though, requiring minimal physical presence on set.
Bitten is done shooting and this is the last season, so that’s not a problem there.
Was it cancelled? I dont recall seeing an announcement of that.

I’m surprised it lasted past the first season. It was like the tv show equivalent of a b-movie or something Mystery Science theater would have shown if it was a bad scifi movie.
It was only announced as cancelled in Canada [Space], The U.S. [Syfy] has not announced that it is the final season yet – they likely will soon enough.
I actually would love to see Tom Welling on Supergirl for a guest role like Dean Cain did or even better as a specialist of Krypton like Christpher Reeve did on Smallville.
I like these little touches. Smallville was like that too. Helen Slater, Laura Vandervoort both a part of the legacy. Maybe they’ll have Peyton List and Maureen Teefy interact with Jenna Dewan’s Lucy sometime.
Master Jailer is a human from Earth. Odd choice to change him into an alien.
Checking DC Wikia, Master Jailer was originally a Superboy villain. I’m shocked, lol.
Hope thats’s when Kara’s mom visits would be cool to see all three generations of the girl of steel in one setting.
From what I’ve been reading elsewhere, that won’t happen in her first appearance but sometime later. So yeah they’ll have 3 Supergirls at once.

For frak’s sake. Once again, stealing from Superman because the character sucks, her comics sucked. She has no similar such stories, so she has to take, take, take, take from the better character. Cheap knock-off.
There’s a reason why when DC had to choose the best five Supergirl stories of all time three of them were of a version that was not Kara Zor-El, while the two that were were the one in which she died and one in which she came back as a ghost. She has no stories of worth that merit being adapted. There’s not enough good material in any of her comics to be adapted, so she has to steal from a better character.
I get that you don’t like Supergirl – show or concept, and you don’t think it has any originality. But genuinely would you not be better off just watching something you enjoy and just ignore Supergirl. You’re entitled to your opinion but it is quite repetitive.

Well I do kind of have to read it if I read the comments section. As I say, you’re entitled to your opinion but you’re not really speaking out against ‘one type of show’ – it’s one show in particular. I just find that there’s plenty of shows to watch. When I watch something I don’t like, I stop watching – but don’t feel I need to share regularly with the world how much I still don’t like it. I just find it odd, but each to their own.

Yeah, we all end up seeing them, because it’s like a disease with you. Normal people, who don’t like a show, reach out, change the channel and watch something else. “Really?” nothing I say has ANYTHING whatsoever to do with this fictional character being female. If you paid attention to what is actually being said rather than the SJW fantasies playing in your head you might be able to realize that.
The problem with the character has nothing to do with gender, it has to do with conceptual issues, it has to do with the character becoming a carbon copy of ANOTHER character (in this instance Superman), it has to do with the fallacy in the promotion of the show, which was about telling THIS character’s story when instead they are using ANOTHER character’s story and passing them off as being about THIS character.
But, again, you would need to pay attention to what is ACTUALLY being said rather than your delusions.
Kara Zor-El fanboys have proven time and time again that they are so desperate to see her in ANYTHING that they are willing to condone whatever stupid thing DC or WB does with her because the only thing they care about is that Supergirl be Kryptonian. They don’t care if her origin, as established in the comics, is changed into a carbon copy of Superman’s origin as long as she’s Kryptonian. They don’t care that her identity as Linda Lee is thrown out and replaced by a bespectacled Kara Danvers that is a carbon copy of Clark Kent as long as she’s Kryptonian. They don’t care that instead of telling original stories ABOUT Supergirl OR adapting ACTUAL Supergirl comics the show uses Superman comics as long as she’s Kryptonian.
Don’t mind him he’s made it clear since day one that if the show were about Superman he wouldn’t have a problem with it.
Her gender has zero to do with anything. It’s about the lack of originality. The show is supposed to be about Supergirl yet fails to use the ACTUAL Supergirl comics for content, instead relying on stealing characters, concepts, and now plots from the Superman comics because its own source material is too poor to adapt and use.
Thats not necessarily a bad thing though… Arrow has borrowed storylines and characters from other DC series that arent part of the Green Arrow comics also… Yes much of the Supergirl comics were not very good… but what matters is how they use the concepts on this show rather than where they came from. You contradict yourself in your comment by the way, you complain about lack of originality but then ask for them to use more stuff from the comics… that isnt really original either… Remixing stuff from various sources is how Berlanti has been doing it on all these shows… I know you are still pissed that they didnt adapt Peter David’s version but you have to get over that… that version would never translate to television very well.. this is what we have so you need to review it on its own terms not wishing for a version you’ll never get.
What I said has zero to do with the character’s gender or with the version of the character being used. If you read what is being said rather than imagine what is being said then you’ll realize it has to do with the show using PLOTS and CHARACTERS from other comics rather than plots and characters from the comic it supposedly adapts.
They have used some plots from the actual comics… Live Wire has fought supergirl in the comics… and my point stands… I have no problem with them remixing characters from other comics to use here… Arrow has done that to good effect.

There’s a contradiction there. If the source material is too poor to adapt then they can’t very well use it can they? So once again your actual objection is to the show existing at all.
What you fail to understand is that none of the comic hero TV shows are adaptations of the comics. They use the origin and the concept, and then anything they can get permission to use is fair game.
You sound like the sort of viewer that won’t watch a TV show based on a book if anything at all gets changed. Even very faithful adaptations have make changes as things that work in print do not always work on the screen.
There’s no contradiction. What there is is a failure on you and Z’s part to think beyond what you find acceptable, which is the show taking from other comics. Since the actual source material is too lacking to be adapted, the solution is not not in stealing from OTHER comics, but instead in telling ORIGINAL stories that fix whatever flaws there are in the concept. Instead of doing that, they’re trying to hide those flaws by taking material from another successful comic book, and movies and TV shows and cartoons based on that other comic book.
The solution to fixing the conceptual and narrative shortcomings in Supergirl is not to hide them and ignore them by stealing material from the Superman comics, movies, and cartoons, which is what the Supergirl show is doing. It is in developing NEW material that fits and complements her own story (isn’t that the line of crap CBS shoved down people’s throats when they promoted the show, that this was HER story? Using “Whatever Happened To the Man of Tomorrow?” as the basis of an episode is not telling anyone HER story, it’s using [Superman]’s story without him in it.)
When they take material conceived and designed for Superman to do an episode of Supergirl, that whole promotional tagline about this being her story comes off as a meaningless bill of goods, and the people behind it come off as snake oil salesmen.

Read his comments on a few Supergirl articles and the read his comments on other comicbook related show articles such as The Flash or Arrow and you can see the nitpicking from him is just targetted Supergirl and how this is the only show that copies from Superman stories while no mention of other shows lifting their stories from different comic book characters.

This is so fantastic!!! as I wrote elsewhere, Laura’s portrayal of the character was my introduction to the character. I know on screen Helen was the first, but I was a Smallville fan and that’s how I saw Kara for the first time – through Laura. I really loved her as Kara and ended up watching the movie (with Helen), DC animated, checking up some comics. I became a fan of the character because Laura made me care. This is just incredible news.
Smallville had: Christopher Reeve, Dean Cain, Helen Slater, Margot Kidder, Annette O’Toole, Terence Stamp, Teri Hatcher…etc., I loved the appearances in Smallville and I love Supergirl for doing similarly.

This is a very exciting piece of meta casting that they pulled off… how much longer are they going to make us wait for Tom Welling. And by the way, TV line, I see you have yet to do something regarding the individuals who have made it their personal mission to log on to everything that is tagged Supergirl so they can come in with their Wikipedia-based logic, & attack and harass others just because they disagree with him. Oh I’m glad they’re including her in some capacity. I was disappointed she wasn’t playing Supergirl (although Melissa Benoist is doing a great job and obviously scheduling issues ruled Laura out). But I’m really glad to see her show up. Would love to see some other Smallville vets as well!
