One of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel‘s most popular characters is getting a screen-time boost.
Luke Kirby, who has earned fan adoration (not to mention a 2019 Emmy) for playing real-life comic Lenny Bruce on the Amazon Prime hit, will have a larger presence in Season 4, series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino confirms.
“We never intended for Lenny to be as important as he is,” the EP admitted during a recent Woodstock Film Festival virtual panel discussion (moderated by yours truly). “He’s only been in [a couple] episodes a season. It’s weird because he’s such a presence. He’s going to be in a little bit more [in Season 4], which is great.”
Marveling at the lightning-in-a-bottle dynamic between Kirby’s Lenny and Rachel Brosnahan’s Midge, Sherman-Palladino says, ” The chemistry that they have and the way that they work together and
the ease they feel with each other — that’s just luck. You hope for that every time you cast a love interest for someone. You hope that there’s chemistry there and people will buy into it. And [Rachel and Luke] just have it. It ups the level of the storyline.
“What I love about [Lenny] is that he respects [Midge] as a comedian,” she added. “He doesn’t look at her as a conquest. I think that’s why people are responding to that relationship.”
As we reported earlier this week, production on Maisel Season 4 — delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic — is slated to get underway in early January. “Costume fittings are happening [now], sets are being built like mad,” AS-P revealed. “We’re breaking our stories, we’re writing. And then in December we’re dragging the actors in and we’re going to table read the scripts. And then, come January 7, it’s, ‘On your mark, get set, go.’”
Pressed for additional intel (read: spoilers) on Season 4, Sherman-Palladino jokes that Baby Yoda will make an appearance. “He is hilarious,” she cracked of the breakout Mandalorian character. “He does 10 minutes at the Playboy Club that is sensational.”
i prefer him in small doses. 🤷🏻♀️
She did say just a “little bit more”, so instead of two episodes, maybe four this year?
Coming from the facebook post, I was hoping it would be Liza ☹️
He is so brilliant, and their chemistry melts the screen every single time. Cannot wait for more Lenny!
I had my fingers crossed it was Ben (Zackary Levi)
This! Seriously, what did Ben ever do to Midge? He put no demands on her, supported her career, and then gets dumped. I love the show but I HATE how ASP handles relationships.
Midge likes the “bad” boys.
Personally, and nothing against Levi, but he was poor casting. He is, for lack of a better expression, too Zachary Levi. I feel it should have gone to a lesser known/familiar actor. One thing about the show is that I was not familiar with many of the actors except Tony Shalhoub and Jane Lynch. Lynch is another I wish they had another actor play her character. Not having such named, famous, actors made the show more realistic and refreshing. More so for the time period it takes place in..
I agree. I want to see Ben again
Less Lenny, more Susie.
I like the actor, but I don’t like that they essentially are glorifying an abuser. I wish they would have just had a fictional comic instead.
Different JD than the less Lenny post…
Yeah I wish they’d done a fictional comedian based on him too. By using Lenny Bruce they are kind of stuck with his real life story, which means I assume he will be dead soon on the show.
I don’t feel they are glorifying him. They are just portraying him with all his flaws. We all know what happened to him.
I feel like one of the reasons Lenny is so liked is because he always leaves while the fans still want more. I think there was a lot of supporting characters on Gilmore Girls that this also applies to- they were liked by fans when they popped up every few episodes for a bit but then they got overused to the point the fans turned on them (see Kirk and Taylor).
As long as he is not in every episode I love that he is getting more screen time. I love the way he mentors and encourages Midge and their chemistry is off the wall.
I don’t think there’s much to worry about. The headline overstated what Amy said, which was he will be in the next season “a bit more”.
In real life, Lenny Bruce tragically died in 1966…i wonder how long the show will go till it addresses this…does any one know what year we left off in?
I get the feeling very soon. They were in the early 60s last season. So it makes me nervous that the reason we’re seeing more of him is because he takes his final bow at the end of this season.
Luke Kirby is brilliant and is the only reason a lot of people I know managed to watch season 3. This is great for the show.
True, but sadly I don’t think he’ll make it out of Season 4 alive.
I don’t mind his character, I just hope they don’t go “there” with him and Midge. It is better for both of them that they don’t. Everyone has one of those people in their history, someone who you could have had a relationship with, but you both know that you absolutely never should. It is such an interesting dynamic that is not explored often in TV shows. I loved it last season when they flirted with the idea, but saner heads prevailed. Both characters being highly destructive in their past relationships, they realized it was much better to leave it. Their current relationship is so much better than a romantic relationship.
Hmm….. Ok. I’m fine with Lenny but I was REALLY hoping the character mentioned would be Mrs. Moskowitz! (with a Baseball Bat!)
I absolutely love this show. The writers are genius and all the actors and actresses are so talented. I can’t wait for season 4. Have been binge watching the other seasons. I just can’t get enough. Would like to see Midge and Shy back together.
Come back nowwwwww
I am a huge Luke Kirby fan and encourage him to be used more in Season 4. He is yummy
