Knicks Star Jalen Brunson Makes His Law & Order: SVU Debut — Who'd He Play, And How'd He Do?
My captain Benson, my ADA Carisi, my cream cheese chive, Jalen Brunson in Episode 5!
As "Law & Order: SVU" star Mariska Hargitay foretold weeks ago, the New York Knicks point guard guest-starred in Thursday's hour, months after leading his team to victory in the NBA Finals. After that momentous 94-90 Game 5 win in June against the San Antonio Spurs — the Knicks' first such victory in 53 years — Brunson was named tournament MVP.
Hargitay's friendship with the team captain is well-documented. Scenes from their ongoing mutual appreciation society include her sitting courtside during the Knicks' hard-won finals run, and his appearing in a pre-taped bit that kicked off her 2026 Emmys hosting gig.
But leading into this week's "SVU," we didn't know much about what circumstances would bring Brunson's character — Det. Jay Madison — into the action. What's more, the part marks the pro athlete's dramatic acting debut (though he hosted the Season 52 premiere of "Saturday Night Live" in September).
So, how did Brunson's entrance into the "Law & Order"verse go? Read on for the details.
Jalen Brunson's character provides a key detail in this week's case
The episode, titled "Forsaken," dealt with a young woman named Chloe (played by Lauren Cole) who was attacked while attending a wedding reception. Though Chloe initially said she didn't know who'd hurt her, it soon became clear that her hotheaded father, Rick (Bill Heck, "Locke & Key"), and overbearing mother, Monica (Jessalyn Gilsig, "Glee"), were not acting in her best interests.
Upon learning that Rick had his record sealed after a previous run-in with the New York Police Department, Capt. Benson (Mariksa Hargitay) met up at a restaurant with Jalen Brunson's Jay Madison, an officer involved in the incident. It seemed as though Benson knew Madison casually; she opened the conversation by congratulating him on his promotion to detective. He thanked her, adding a sound bite that could've come straight outta a post-game interview: "Focused on my goals, gave 110 percent. Things worked out."
Madison told Benson that Rick and his teen son, Tyler (Sam Cusson), were in a vehicle that Madison and his partner stopped; Rick's blood alcohol soon prooved well above legal limits for driving. After both Rick and Tyler grew angry at the cops, Madison searched the car and found a pocket knife and a kubaton, or metal rod matching the kind of weapon used in Chloe's assault. Benson quickly ascertained that Madison and his partner seized the knife but not the kubaton, then she hustled out of the eatery, calling Assistant District Attorney Dominick "Sonny" Carisi. Jr to get a warrant for the kubaton.
The cops found the weapon hidden at Rick and Monica's, and after Chloe admitted to Olivia that Tyler was the one who attacked her — and had been harming her for years — the case wernt to trial. Rick and Monica essentially jettisoned Chloe in favor of protecting Tyler, but eventually the testimony of Chloe and Tyler's young brother, Evan (Emmett Moss, "The Pitt") proved that Chloe's version of events was the truth.
What did you think of the episode and Brunson's performance in it? Are you looking forward to other upcoming "SVU" guest stars? We want to hear all about all of it in the comments!
