Anderson on Thursday tweeted an image of Media, the role she’ll play in the cabler’s upcoming adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s beloved novel.
Anderson will guest-star in multiple episodes of the Bryan Fuller series as “the mouthpiece for the New Gods, functioning as their public face and sales representative, by taking the form of various iconic celebrities,” per the official character description. “She lives off the attention and worship that people give to screens — to their laptops, their TVs, to their iPhones in their hands while they watch their TVs. Ever the perky spokesperson, and always in control, she spins stories in whatever direction best suits her.”
Long story short: It’s probably not a coincidence that Anderson appears to be dolled up as American icon Marilyn Monroe in the photo.
American Gods follows recently released convict Shadow Moon (The 100‘s Ricky Whittle) as he accepts a job to become a bodyguard/traveling companion for a mysterious man named Mr. Wednesday (Deadwood‘s Ian McShane). During their long journey throughout the United States, Shadow meets Mad Sweeney (Orange Is the New Black‘s Pablo Schreiber) and learns that a war is brewing between the nation’s traditional gods of mythological roots and an upstart pantheon of gods reflecting society’s modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity and drugs.
