Strahan’s last Live broadcast will be May 13, ABC confirms to our sister site Variety. Initially, the former NFL star was expected to sit alongside co-host Kelly Ripa into the summer months. Per a People report, the moved-up exit date will allow Strahan to take the summer off before debuting as a Good Morning America regular in the fall.
The news of his imminent job change, made after last Tuesday’s Live and shared with Ripa shortly before the general public found out, reportedly caught her unawares. Her absence Wednesday through Monday (part of which, the network says, was a planned vacation), she told staffers in an email, gave her time to “process” the upcoming shake-up.
After a personal apology from Disney-ABC top brass, Ripa returned to her daytime talk show on Tuesday. After walking out hand-in-hand with Strahan and explaining her time away from the chatfest, Ripa said, “I am thrilled for Michael. I am thrilled for you. This is a tremendous opportunity and I couldn’t be, and we couldn’t be, prouder of you and everything we’ve accomplished together.”
Strahan’s earlier-than-planned exit also gives Live a little extra time to find a replacement for him.
