Report: True Detective Season 2 Eyeing Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch

True Detective Colin Farrell Season 2 Cast

Whether or not time is a flat circle, the casting process for Season 2 of HBO’s True Detective is accelerating.

Colin Farrell and Taylor Kitsch are reportedly in serious discussions for two of the season’s lead roles, according to respective stories by our sister site Deadline and The Wrap.

At the Television Critics Association summer press tour on Thursday, HBO president Michael Lombardo said a Season 2 casting announcement was imminent, and added, “[T]he two scripts we have are…more exciting than the first season.”

Series creator Nic Pizzolatto, meanwhile, told The Daily Beast this week that the new season will be set in California and feature “four central roles.”

The anthology format of True Detective — each season will reboot with new settings and characters — has allowed the network to reach out to big names who might not otherwise want to commit to multiple seasons of a series.

Season 1 of True Detective, which took place in Louisiana with a narrative that fluctuated between the mid-’90s and the present, earned Emmy nominations yesterday for Best Drama and Lead Actor in a Drama for stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, neither of whom will return for Season 2.

  1. Katie says:

PERFECT casting. Colin Farrell is one of the most underrated actors out there and he deserves the kind of year McConaughey just had. Hope they seal the deal with him!

  2. I Heart Damon Salvatore says:

I’m a huge Taylor Kitsch fan (fell in love with him during his FNL days and haven’t looked back) so I hope this happens. I need regular doses of him on TV again!

  3. Roger says:

    Tatiana Maslany.

  4. Brenda says:

Taylor Kitsch hasn’t yet convinced me but I love Colin Farrell! He hasn’t always been in the best movies, but his performances have always been good.

  5. Taylor says:

Wish they hadn’t squashed that Chastain rumor recently. She’d be a perfect match with these guys. Taylor and Colin are both great actors!

  6. Lia says:

This would be perfect. I’ve always been a fan of Colin’s and it would be wonderful to see him on my tv, and Taylor (oh Riggins!). YES, a million times yes.

  7. Sarah says:

Love Farell, and Taylor won me over with The Normal Heary. This could be good!

  8. Cece says:

Taylor Kitsch joining True Detective will certainly make up for the disappointment in no nomination for his role in The Normal Heart. I’m still bitter about that. He’s a true character actor, this would be perfect for him. And Colin Farrell as well? Count me in.

  9. Claire says:

CLEAR EYES FULL HEARTS CAN’T LOSE! Riggins in True Detective? Count me in!

  10. SunflowerParis says:

I have never had any interest in the show, but with that casting I would be checking in! :)

  11. Drew says:

True detective is one of the best series of the year, and this will continue with this duo!

  12. Meg says:

UM YES to Taylor Kitsch! Would love to see Maggie Siff on my tv again on a respected tv show but we’ll see who else they cast….

  13. Finally, some real diversity on t.v. Glad to see white guys finally getting a shot at making it big!

  14. Miranda says:

I honestly LOVE the idea of Colin Farrell and Taylor Kitsch (TAYLOR KITSCH!!) together for season 2.
And a surprise announcement that Jessica Chastain is available after all would just be a cherry on top.

  15. lechatnoir says:

I was expecting them to hire 2 women , yes I’m a bloke . Tatiana Maslanie at say ,Gina torres , this pair would have killed it. Kitsch and Pharell are everywhere , and Kitsch is as overexposed as Taylor swift.

  16. Alex says:

i am actually dying. this is the best news ever.

  17. Yolanda says:

Great choice, HBO! Well, Sarah Michelle Gellar is free and as she proved in “Buffy” she has some serious chops so it’d be nice to see her as female lead. Oh, and to those who’d like to see Jessica Chastain to star opposite Colin, well, they both star in “Miss Julie” and it’s coming out this year.

  18. Sharon Pyke says:

I watched last season & got a lil bit miffed when they said Matt & Woody wouldnt be back next season…..Now they have my attention with these 2 Fine Actors & yes I mean Fine in every way possible!!!! They are Fabulous actors!!!I cant wait for the second season to start!!!!!

  19. IMHO says:

    Great news ! Hope it’s true…

  20. K says:

Yes! Farrell is an amazing actor. Now I’d love Chloe Sevigny to be the third detective!

  21. Cheryl Nuzzolo says:

CF & TK = excellent casting. I vote for Olivia Wilde with these 2 mates!

  22. In my mind I think a killer pairing would’ve been Edward Norton and Sam Rockwell, with Maria Bello as a third possible lead. But I like the sound of Farrell.

  23. analog says:

What a huge downgrade from last season.

  24. Coal says:

A lot of women seem to be very pleased with the potential casting of the two. It has nothing to do with their looks right ladies ? Its all about there acting.

  25. Cookely says:

    Yeah, buddy!

  26. Emgee says:

Tim Riggins back on TV? I’d be up for it, and I didn’t watch Season 1.

  28. LP Williams says:

Tim Riggins? I wonder how much booze he’ll go through for this role. He’s an impeccable actor. I really could see Kyle Chandler or Zach Gilford or Michael B Jordan in this role? But then again im just desperate for FNL reunion so I’m quite bias. A surprising and unexpected, yet sufficient addition would be Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx? How we could we REALLY forget how incredible and technical an actor he is? All for #TeamFoxx #TeamKitsch say I? Oh and what about Clive Owen? One film can sum up how well-suited he is for this role- “Inside Man”.

  29. Stanislava says:

    Awesome!Hope it’s true!Can’t wait!

  30. lo' says:

NO not Colin Farrell, I can’t stand the man

  31. M3rc Nate says:

Would love it, Colin is so fantastic but cause of his issues and bad picking of projects (or projects just not turning out too good) he doesnt get many parts showing his true talent. And Taylor was FANTASTIC on FNL but since then…especially since John Carter (personally i loved the movie), his career isnt as good as it should be, but he was fantastic in Lone Survivor and i hope he gets this and gets to show his range and talent and it opens doors for him to get other lead roles.

  32. Impressive piece, I enjoyed the earpiece walkie talkie bit
