When Regina King confidently strutted her way through Union Station at the top of this year’s Oscars broadcast with candy-colored movie-style credits popping up behind her, I got excited that this year’s show might actually be different. And indeed, it was… but that’s not necessarily a compliment.
Yes, Sunday’s Oscar broadcast on ABC comes with a big old asterisk, after a global coronavirus pandemic that devastated the movie industry and forced the annual awards show to severely alter its format. Faced with travel restrictions and safety protocols, the Oscars had a chance to reinvent itself from scratch, and first-time producers Steven Soderbergh, Stacey Sher and Jesse Collins certainly took a few chances along the way. Some of them worked out beautifully. (It was one of the best-looking Oscars in years, for one thing.) But most of the innovations fell flat, and the Oscars’ worst tendencies towards bloat and self-congratulation were only amplified in the new setting. Every Oscar broadcast has its slow parts. This year, it felt like all slow parts.
Taping the ceremony at Los Angeles’ Union Station was a smart move: The setting had an elegant, old Hollywood feel and helped infuse the show with some much-needed glamour. I appreciated the lushly colorful visual palette, adorning the usual gold with vivid purples and oranges and blues. Plus, the producers did what they could to preserve the glitz of Hollywood’s biggest night, thankfully keeping the Zooms to a minimum and getting most of the nominees there in person. But the show that followed, sadly, was a painfully earnest snoozefest: a sluggish, humorless mix of overly long speeches and endless pats on the back with almost no entertainment value. Did they forget that this is supposed to be a show?!?
It doesn’t help that this year’s nominees weren’t exactly blockbusters — even if theaters were open, I can’t imagine that Nomadland or Mank would be setting box-office records — but strangely, these Oscars made almost no effort to introduce viewers to these films, with precious few clips from the nominated films and performances. (They somehow gave out an award for Best Costume Design… and we never even got to see the costumes! Films are a visual medium! Let us see them!) Instead, we got long, drawn-out speeches with presenters paying homage to each nominee in a fawning way that just felt phony. These Oscars committed the cardinal sin of telling and not showing: They told us we should care about these movies, instead of showing us why we should care. [pmc_inline_gallery]
I didn’t really miss having a host, and King did a fantastic job starting the show off strong. But the lack of a traditional monologue, with sharp zingers to take a bit of the hot air out of the room, just made the show feel even more self-important than usual. The smug tone was so rampant, it got awkward at times: While all the praise was being heaped on the nominees, they just looked embarrassed, like they were being called on in class and didn’t know the answer. And without an orchestra to play them off, most of the acceptance speeches ran on too long, which further blunted the momentum. It felt like a private party that we were peeking in on, rather than a celebration of movies where everybody is welcome.
Normally we’d at least get a few musical performances to break up the monotony, but puzzlingly, all of this year’s nominated song performances were relegated to the pre-show. So we didn’t even get that! The eventual winner H.E.R. gave a stirringly militant performance of “Fight for You” from Judas and the Black Messiah… but we didn’t get to see even a second of it during the actual show. Oh well, more time to hear Reese Witherspoon tell us about the Best Animated Short nominees’ favorite films, I suppose. The pacing was off all night, really, with the In Memoriam segment getting horribly rushed in favor of a frivolous trivia segment. (Seeing Glenn Close dance “Da Butt,” though, was a too-rare glimpse of the chaotic energy this show sorely needed.)
The Oscars are meant to be a transporting, aspirational glimpse at Hollywood royalty, and I’ve been a loyal viewer for more than 30 years now. But this one felt more like an endurance test. Less than an hour in, I was already checking the clock. When it ended, late, at the 3 hour, 16 minute mark, I felt relieved. Anthony Hopkins not even showing up to receive the final award for Best Actor was appropriately anticlimactic. Congratulations to the winners, as always… but maybe next year, let’s go back to basics, huh?
Now it’s your turn: Give this year’s Oscars a grade in our poll, and hit the comments below to share your thoughts.
Such a bad show! I’m so sick of people using these awards shows as platforms to show their political slants. Also, almost all of these films were dull and not worth seeing.
However, nice to see Glenn Close dance around… now will they PLEASE give her an Oscar!
And I for one am sick of people complaining about people expressing views about gee, not killing people. Maybe, don’t watch?
No, Sharon’s right. The neverending drum beat of political commentary instead of entertainment is way past annoying. Ricky G nailed it a few years ago when he said that nobody cares what their opinions are. And the ratings will show it I’m sure.
yet clowns like sean Hannity and Tucker Carlson get to express their views EVERY night what makes THEIR opinions important?
They are opinion makers/givers! These actors don’t need to spout their rhetoric to me when I just want to get away from it all and be entertained!!!!!!!! That is all I ever ask of these dumb award shows!
Hannity and Tucker are on a news site. Last night was supposed to be about entertainment. They failed miserably.
Tucker himself when sued in court said he is entertainment and not news or something to take seriously as fact. Google a bit. If those d0uchebags can lie, twist and contort facts to fit their narrative and claim they are not news but entertainment surely the real entertainers can opine a bit on the news.
Like Sydney said, whenever Fox has been sued they typically default to the “we’re just entertainment” excuse.
–
It is also debatable if they should even be ALLOWED to give their own opinions since they not only present their opinions as news but demonstrate a clear bias.
There’s a time and a place and this isn’t it. Get invited to a talk show or go on the news. Save it for people who give a crap. This show is supposed to be entertaining, not NBCNews.
Which – is also your opinion. As is clear from the comments, there are at least as many people who think any platform that can raise a message, can perfectly be used to do so. Those ‘offended’, can turn off their televisions.
Please! Only opinions that fit in with that sad crowd are allowed. Can you imagine if someone walked up there and used the platform to speak out against the tragedy of all the unborn minority children being killed through abortion? So hypocritical and ridiculous.
You have a warped view of reality. Shared by many, but warped just the same.
Spot on, jk
Or, god forbid, that someone walked up there and told black people to stop killing other black people!
The problem is they do. And the show, and their industry, is kind of in the business of getting people to watch what they do, not “turn it off.” What good is your message if there’s no one left to listen to it? Because that will probably be the lowest rated show ever.
Did you look at the poll at the top of this???
80 percent had a NEGATIVE opinion of the show!!
Problem for the industry is they silly movie stars have turned off the very audience that will pay to go see their movie or pay for premium TV… The young liberals who love them don’t or can’t pay…
and they did!
If that’s what YOU want, then watch CNN or some other news show. That horse has already been beaten to death.
Completely agree with Sara.
I am also sick of people complaining about celebrities expressing their views during award shows.
Just don’twatch. Keep a closed mind.
You stay in your little echo chamber of fake moral purity. I’ll take your advice and not watch. I’m tired of lecturing, pompous millionaires. They do have power to help — give away some of that money they earn through something as frivolous as acting and singing. Have you seen the mansions they live in? But WE the ordinary folk are the problem? They can suck a bag of D.
Sad to see Reggie King make it about race and politics 2 minutes into the opening and then insulted the tv audience saying we don’t like celebrity preaching…well you Ain’t no preacher honey and I took your advice in your insult and used my remote to shut off what sounds like a titanic of a show.
As soon as Regina Ungrateful opened her mouth I saw Flies streaming out …and we know where flies gather…thank goodness for remotes and other more entertaining programming. Political/racist comments are fir talk shows …not award shows that keep paying audiences going back to renting, purchasing these People’s movies whereby they make millions. Well, that’s over now Hollywood.
You all shot yourselves in the mouth with each rambling statement, you could hear remotes clicking all over the nation.
Then get lost and watch some Faux news. Its streaming on the TooSlowOld&OutofTouch Network and stop the annoying whine fest.
God you racist trolls love your anonyminity. She talked about her son. If you have kids or even loved ones you can muster the empathy to understand that… But only if you possess even a miniscule amount of humanity.
…Which you plainly do not.
Yes, Regina completely ruined the introduction to the show with the first thing she said talking about what if the George Floyd verdict had been different. That right there would have caused a lot of people to turn the channel, and those people wouldn’t have known that it didn’t get any better or less preachy throughout the next 3 hours. It seemed to me like it was a competition to see who could do the best job of making people cry. That’s as bad as it gets for the Oscars.
The article talked about how beautiful the place was I have seen bars more beautiful then that !
I guess the producers were betting that Chadwick was going to win best actor, oops, bad assumption! There is was no reason to award best movie before lead actress and actor.
The entire show just showed that it isn’t needed anymore. Honoring movies that were at best, mediocre and the same movies winning more awards… boring!
I think they’re damned if they do damned if they don’t. They’re regularly criticised for sketches and gimmicks and the year they focus on the movies themselves they get criticised … I wish it had more “life” but overall it did what it said, presented awards.
True. But as Dave said, it was humorless and run poorly. You can give out awards without being goofy. Have a few more funny people in there to liven things up a bit. The show took itself way too seriously and the actors that won followed that.
People are afraid to be funny anymore, that’s why Seinfeld quit standup. He said everything you say gets accused of being something – sexist, racist, age discrimination. The only one who can say whatever the hell they feel like is apparently LeBron. It’s sad, it’s supposed to be entertaining.
Uh Seinfeld released a stand up special last year on netflix from his tour in 2019. He also asked to first guy on stage last week when gotham comedy club reopened. He certainly didn’t quit
Great example of a false narrative from Poof there. The facts don’t tell the story he’s trying to tell, so sure, make up some “facts” out of thin air. Doesn’t matter if they are true or not.
No you’re wrong. Hes not the only one. Tucker Carlson says what ever he wants, usually horrible things and still stays on the air
Seinfeld did NOT quit standup – he stopped playing college campuses because of the overwhelming sensitivity to everything makes it impossible for comics to do their acts.
We can always go back to the good old days…. MAGA
you’re an idiot
Perhaps they thought with everything going on that to have comedy sketches would be in poor taste. Like I said, they’re damned if they do.
They’d be criticised if they talked about the many lives lost in the pandemic and BLM protests just to have a stand up comedy routine 20 minutes later. I guarantee people would call the ceremony “in poor taste” or “uneven”
They focused on movies? They didn’t show any clips!
I never saw the Best Picture not being the climax. I’m guessing the producers wanted Best Actor last so as to have an emotional fiale when Chatman won.
Well, that didn’t work out very well, did it?
Not much did tonight, at least as far as the production and decisions made tonight. The amount of diversity and historical wins was great, but that’s about it.
Even if Chadwick won, there is still no one to wrap up the show. Not with Joaquin Phoenix as the presenter which for some reason they decided to go with last year actor winner to present this year actor rather than the usual prior year actress winner to present this year actor winner. With Best Picture last at least they can choose the presenter to help wrapping up the show. Joaquin can hardly present from the teleprompter.
I think they thought having Phoenix present the best actress winner would be a bad look since he’s been accused of inappropriate sexual behavior with female actors. Either way, by the time he came on, I’m glad his speech was short and sweet. But that ending, that was the worst!
Painful
Thank goodness the “In memoriam”was so quick. After all who wants to see the names. They obviouslyneeded time for Glenn Close to do the “butt”. I’m just amazed that they are in the production capital of the world and this is what they produced. I’ll see if I can find a channel showing paint dry.
I was looking so forward to this show, and after 30 mins I wanted to change the channel…they fast forwarded the in memoriam, which I couldn’t believe…they gave out best picture before the acting awards which was jarring and turned out to be the wrong choice given the ended with a very brief Frances mcdormand and Anthony Hopkins no showing…if I had to guess the producers probably thought the winning actors would give some string speech to end on…imagine, whom was thought to be the frontrunner, Chadwhick bosemans family ending the show with a powerful speech…i think that’s what they were hoping for… but instead we got that lackluster anticlimactic ending….bizarre all around.
Absolutely spot on review. This ceremony lacked joy.
So the supposed pinnacle entertainment show of entertainment world failed to entertain at all? The speeches were so long and so boring, the order in which they presented the awards was ridiculous, Best Director was way early on, instead of towards the end, and then them doing Best Picture before Actor and Actress? Really? Chloe Zhang being only the 2nd woman and first woman of color to win should have been lauded towards the end of the show like always, but it was stuck in that middle. The fact that they put all their eggs in the basket of Chadwick Boseman winning and ending the show was truly the epitome of bad decisions by the producers. Not saying Anthony Hopkins should not have won, but given there was a chance they could, and the fact that they knew he would not be there should have had them rethink their idea to put the category last. The in-memorium that had to follow the song’s beat, so in the fast moments of the song you couldn’t even see or read the names because they had to follow the music. Why? So many lives lost in 2020 and they couldn’t slow it down a bit so we can at the very least read their names?
Every move they made tonight was terrible. But allowing the winners to talk for as long as they wanted was brutal. Frances McDormand’s speech was weird but it was less than a minute, so gotta give her that. Tonight was a night of so many historical moments but the fact that it was produced so terribly will make people focus on that over the moments that truly were groundbreaking.
Again, for this to be the supposed pinnacle of entertainment and to have very little entertainment is just a shame and puts a bad spotlight on an industry that really needed an amazing night to try to get viewers to go back to theaters, but instead we got the over 3 hour mess.
Uh…speaking of long and boring…..you might want to try editing your super long and boring review.
Why is it in this day and age we cannot express our views without getting trampled on????????????
Says the person who tramples on other people’s views….
Spot on!!
Stacie, thanks for the wonderful review.
Stacie nailed it perfectly.
Very well said, echoing what I was about to post, so I bow to you. Just to add, tho, I was glad it wasn’t all zoom and that there was a sense of fashion & celebration. But …. vast majority of production decision were just bad. Please bring back producers/directors who know how to deliver shows like this.
Frances McDormand was totally stoned and arrogant
so what’s new? Have you ever seen her when she wasn’t?
Hysterical! Thanks for making me laugh.
Maybe it’s just me, but I thought it was one of the best Oscar shows ever. They cut out all the crap and made it just about the people. I watched the whole thing, which I haven’t done in years.
That’s good. It should have a solid viewership, knowing what they want, I just saw that Hopkins won best actor for portraying a man with dementia, and had zero interest in watching anything about it or the award ceremony ondemand. At 76 I am more interested in upbeat life struggles, not reinforcing an image.
She loves herself and was high on pot… I don’t think that’s the insult you think it is.
The above reply is @ Connor Snyder
No fun in the show. Really thought the intro of each nominee was very odd, it just didn’t work. However, the worst part was moving Best Picture before the ends of the show. Obviously, most people thought Chadwick would win, but to rearrange the show for that moment, was just stupid. The funny part is it didn’t pay off. Such a spectacular ending to have Anthony win and not even be at the show or in a virtual option.
BTW… Francis was the main focus in her movie, but does she really need 3 lead actress (and one producer) Oscar? She’s ok, but not at the level of so many other actresses.
Don’t often get a chance to correct someone when my name is misspelled. So I’m taking this time to let you & anyone else who doesn’t know; Francis is the male spelling & Frances is the female. Should an apology be made to Frances McDormand?
I agree with this review. Beautiful location. Way way too long speeches. No clips of performances.. which was a huge disappointment. Instead of having all the big awards at the end, they were mixed up. If I hadn’t caught the preshow I wouldn’t have seen the amazing best song performances. The In Memorium song was wrong and then it went so fast you could barely catch the names. Overall the worst Oscars ever. Zero entertainment. Ugh!
The worst I’ve ever seen, Pretentious bore. Turned it off and when it was over tried to watch it on my dvr at fastest fast forward speed.. It was still DULL! And no movie clips. HA!
in short they made Oscars show without show because there was absolutely nothing which we can call by the name show, three hours of too long speech is not the show, im almost sure if someone made such kind of show in any tv channel he be cancelling after one maybe two episode

So true! Well said
I agree with everything! Everything you wrote about was exactly what I complained about in our group text!
Stink, Stank, Stunk
That about sums it up.
It was a nice looking place, with a number of people in the audience, but unfortunately few that I recognized so I stopped watching. Actually the ceremony is not worth watching — too many accolades that the general public knows nothing about. All I care to see are the winners of male & female top acting awards and the best picture.
Well, glad I skipped it this year. Happy for Anthony to get his 2nd Oscar before he dies! But, Frances McDormand has now more Oscars than Meryl Streep, really? Mediocre movie year, mediocre Oscars. Perhaps next year things go back to normal. This coming from a huge fan, I actually have a picture frame in my room with Joaquin, Brad and Renee holding their Oscars from last year. Did not see many of the nominees this year, but to me The Trial of Chicago 7 was the best and knew it was not going to win anything.
She actually has the same total number as Steep, who has 2 for Best Actress and one for Best Supporting Actress.
I think she meant MCDormand has one more Best Actress Oscar than Streep, not the total amount of Oscars.
Frances McDormand is a producer on Nomadland, so she gets credited with an Oscar for Best Picture
Being able to even hold the awards is a significant achievement in itself. There is still a global pandemic going on.
Scott you are absolutely right. I was very surprised that any of the award shows would be able to be put together for TV. Thanks for mentioning “that”.
It was a beautiful venue….so hoping in future they can hold it there, find a host, have some band there to play the actors off….and let us see clips of the movies and a bit of the music.
I tuned out 10 minutes in when the politics started.
Thanks for trying!
They were sluggish, but under the circumstances, perhaps not so bad? I get tired of the old complaint that mainstream doesn’t watch the films; that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be recognised – they are all beautifully made films. The speeches dragged and were self indulgent, but even there I can appreciate the fact that this is the biggest professional moment of a sound editor’s career, so let them have it (even if it stretches to 3 minutes). Sometimes there’s a gem in there (Yuh-Jung Youn) Clips were definitely needed.

Actually, Regina King WAS an excellent actress…but as soon as she began being recognized by her piers she turned into a self indulgent Political hack. I knew this show would be all PC boring…gave her a chance to rise above…but she sank like a rock as soon as she went into her “I’m the mother” diatribe… I was outta there and onto another channel watching free movies.

Bring back a host; let presenters present, not address the nominees; use music to play off the rambling speeches (Questlove was right there — should have asked him to do this). Insert some musical performances and some levity. Venue was lovely.
Amen!
