How Only Murders' Fatal Finale Twist Sets The Stage For Season 4 — Plus, Ben's Killer Revealed!

Only Murders in the Building has upped the ante ahead of its just-announced Season 4, killing off a fan-favorite character in the closing moments of Tuesday's high-stakes finale. (For our post mortem with series co-creator John Hoffman, click here.)

After Donna and Cliff DeMeo were arrested for the murder of Paul Rudd's Ben Glenroy — Donna poisoned CoBro (though she never intended to give him a lethal dose of rat poison), and Cliff pushed him down the elevator shaft (though not on purpose) — the cast and crew gathered at Oliver's apartment for his second annual Death Rattle afterparty. Everyone showed up, including Sazz Pataki (recurring guest star Jane Lynch). She told Charles that she needed to speak with him about a "sensitive" matter, but would never get the chance.

A few minutes later, Charles' longtime stunt double made her way up to his apartment to retrieve a bottle of wine. It was there, in total darkness, that she took a bullet to the chest. The gunshot came from outside, presumably from another apartment across the corridor. It's also safe to assume the bullet was meant for Charles — but who would want him dead?

The Season 3 finale also set the stage for a potential change of scenery in Season 4. First, Tobert invited Mabel to come with him to Los Angeles while he works on an independent film; she wasn't ready to make a move, but promised that she'd come visit him. Meanwhile, Oliver encouraged Loretta to head west for a fresh start with Dickie. (Not only is Grey's New Orleans: Family Burn Unit still interested, but she's up for the lead role in an animated movie about a talking turkey!) The Death Rattle director also made a point of saying that he likes L.A., which has us thinking that part of next season will take place roughly 3,000 miles away from the Arconia.
