Despite a strong showing during Hollywood Week, one of this season’s most talked-about contestants chose to end their American Idol journey on Sunday.
Following a solid performance of The Police’s “Roxanne,” complete with confidence pointers courtesy of Clay Aiken, 25-year-old Sarah Beth stunned the auditorium with a shocking announcement.
“This opportunity is really rad, but this is actually going to be my last performance,” the young mother of three said. “My heart’s at home, so I’m going to get home to my babies. Thank you.”
Katy Perry tried her best to keep Beth in the game, insisting that “self-love is just as important as motherly love,” but Beth could not be swayed. “I’m really humbled and grateful, and Katy had some really nice things to say,” she said. “I understand how big an opportunity this is. Still, I kind of want to go home.”
Just like that, Beth brought her own Idol journey to an end — but we’d be lying if we pretended like this was the first sign of friction between her and Perry. Shortly after Beth’s initial audition aired on ABC, she posted an emotional TikTok about feeling like Perry “mom-shamed” her.
During the audition, Perry joked about needing to lie down on the table after hearing that someone as young as Beth already had three children. “If Katy lays on the table, I think I’m gonna pass out,” she said, to which Perry replied, “Honey, you’ve been laying on the table too much.”
This did not sit well with Beth, who said Perry’s joke “wasn’t super kind.” She called the televised ordeal “embarrassing” and “hurtful,” concluding that women should always support one another. “It’s hard enough to be a mom and it’s hard enough to be a woman.”
OK, now let’s talk about the singers we will be seeing next week, many of whom received game-changing pointers from several Idol alumni. There’s Nutsa, who worked with Justin Guarini on focusing her energy into a refined performance of the classic balled “I Surrender”; Colin Stough, whose take on Whiskey Meyers’ “Stone” had all the grit and gravel we expected; and Zachariah Smith, who was dubbed “kooky” (in a good way!) after his performance of Foreigner’s “Cold As Ice.”
Also moving through to the Duets Round are Mary Beth Byrd, who brought big emotions to Zach Bryan’s “Something in the Orange”; Hannah Nicolaisen, who charmed the judges with a beautiful, understated original song; Wé Ani, who had the entire auditorium singing her lyrics by the time she was finished; and Olivia Soli, who simply did the damn thing with Whitney Houston’s “How Will I Know.”
Other yeses included Malik Heard, who impressed the judges with his renewed confidence; Kaeyra, who earned a standing ovation with Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun”; Paige Anne, whose talents far exceed her 16 years; Oliver Steele, who brought his natural country groove to Chris Stapleton’s “Broken Halos”; and good ol’ Fire, who gave the judges more than they were expecting via Lauren Daigle’s “You say.”
Mariah Faith is also going through, along with Trey Louis, whose days as a mattress salesman are definitely numbered; Emma Busse, who managed to shake off her theatrical instincts; Megan Danielle, whose emotions nearly kept her from finishing; and Dawson Wayne, a “real, live artist” who hypnotized the judges with a thoughtful original song.
Now for a few exceptional stand-outs, beginning with Haven Madison, who became a frontrunner this week with a powerful original song she wrote when her brother was wrestling with suicidal thoughts. Watch and weep:
Lucy Love also brought the house down, channeling the pain from her dissolving marriage into a “spectacular” performance of “Make You Feel My Love.” Watch:
Then there was Kya Monee‘, who did Willie Spence proud with a bombastic performance of “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going” from the musical Dreamgirls that got everyone on their feet. Video of that will be added when it becomes available.
Lastly, Iam Tongi — dressed to chill in his signature flip-flops and baseball hat — delivered a “perfect” rendition of Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me.” Watch:
But it wasn’t good news for everyone this week. During the two-hour Hollywood Week kickoff, we said goodbye to familiar faces like Lyric Medeiros, who deserves kudos for performing a song from Smash; McKayla Stacey, the much-hyped Idol baby; poor Brayden Phillips, who was too nervous to even remember his category; Ophrah Kablan, one of my personal favorites from the auditions; and several others, including Ashley Tankard, Kamron Lawson, Danny Epp, Owen Eckhardt and Keelin.
What did you think of Idol‘s kick off to Hollywood Week? Were you shocked by Sarah Beth’s sudden departure? Were any of your favorites wrongly eliminated? Drop a comment with your full review of the episode below.
What has happened to AMERICAN IDAL!!!! REDICILOUS!!! TURNING IT OFF TILL KATY PERRY LEAVES. AND BETTER CHOICES ARE EXCEPTED TO PERFORM.
One problem with typing in ALL CAPS is that spell check doesn’t work. Redicilous indeed.
IDOL. RiDICULOUS. ACCEPTED. It is embarrassing for a grown woman to not know how to spell, jeez.
Thank you.
Does anyone know if Paige Anne’s song was an original or cover? I’ve been trying to find information on what it is but haven’t been able to. Thanks.
I think it’s called “Pull You Through” by Maggie Rose?
That’s it! Thank you so much!
So Kate was… right about her the whole time? Why’d she even try out if she “kind of wanted to go home”? What a loser
Every comment isn’t shaming, micro-aggression or offence. Grow up, people. And, how was Katy Perry wrong about her, again? Didn’t she ended up quitting for not being able to juggle motherhood and the pursuit of a musical career at a young age?
Agreed. It says more about her, honestly. If she’s that quick to project that someone is shaming her, she clearly feels ashamed all by herself. I don’t know if she grew up with some “values” in her community that put more importance on her as a baby oven than as a person with dreams, but she’s clearly a conflicted young lady and I hope she gets herself sorted in the end and comes back or finds another way to sing.
Seriously, Baby Oven? vs. money & fame. Wins stupidest comment EVER. Remember, your mother made the same choice related to “values”
Point taken especially the rude baby oven portion but you are turbine pointing out she gave up not only on her singing chance but money and fame so whose words cast more shadows on her choices dl’s or yours?
I wasn’t surprised at all the Sara Beth elected to drop out. Her heart was never really in it to begin with. Also, I am a mom and I did not feel that what Katy said at the audition was shaming. I took it as trying to be funny. Maybe it’s because I’m “older” so I am not as sensitive as a lot of the twentysomethings these days are.
Everyone is just so relentlessly sensitive about everything these days. Some things like bigotry are truly offensive. This was a lame gaffe at most and to call it “mom-shaming”? Yeah, bye. Clearly mommy’s pride is worth more than her dreams.
Oh I agree everyone is so sensitive…it’s ridiculous…
Or they have a bleeding hearts story to tell..
We, Lucy, Emma, Oliver, Iam, Marybeth, Kaeyra, Haven, and Nutsa were definite standouts from this episode!
When are we going to move past these shows like Idol and The Voice. I am so sick of this. All those bleeding hearts stories and sad sak bull. It just seems like it is past time for these shows to go. I can’t see the same stuff over and over. Doesn’t anyone have any new ideas? Even when ratings are poor and they still come back. Why? These shows have lasted long enough. Say good bye, be done… Hate it all!
There is more shows to choose from than ever before… more than anyone could ever watch and somehow you still watch the show you don`t like. Why?
It sounds like you are watching the show and hating every minute of it. Why are you watching. Change the channel or read a good book. Simple fix.
I enjoy KP but her comments to Beth had my guts twisted in knots.
I immediately knew Beth would most likely I Kelly leave. Regarding the whole “is this your dream?” subject, there could be so many reasons for Beth’s answer. Some mothers would never admit openly having other dreams than motherhood even if they do. It’s also possible she’s the person who expects the worst while secretly hoping for the best so comes across as flippant. It’s also possible her husband doesn’t want her to have thus dream. We don’t know. What if she’s had to beg her husband for this opportunity? What if he allowed it to so he could prove to her she’ll fall flat on her face? What if she will suffer consequences for admitting she wants more than what she has?
KP should have been supportive because it takes “something” just to put yourself out there. The judges were ALL making her feel bad for having natural ability without seemingly caring too much about becoming an American Idol. They have NO idea what’s really going on in Beth’s head. It was almost unbearable to watch. It may sound strange but it made me feel the same way I felt watching the police interview Gabby R before she was murdered. No, not comparable situation but the circumstance of reading someones behavior incorrectly. It really made me cringe.
I really do think there are a lot of great singers this year. It will be interesting to see how they do when they get to the live shows. It seemed like last night they really focused on those that will end up in the top twenty. I think in years past we have become invested in a few that got cut and it reflected badly on the judges. I love American Idol think it’s better than the Voice. Have watched since the beginning. Not crazy about Katy. For those that don’t like it, don’t watch it.
I agree. Really enjoying the season so far. Excellent bunch of contestants this year. I also enjoy the judging panel. They are each sincere in helping the contestants and bring a nice energy to the show. Looking forward to the coming weeks!

I honestly don’t see where Katy did anything wrong during Sara Beth’s audition. Katy pushes these contestants to get the best out of them. She doesn’t just sit there and let someone botch their auditions. She pulls the best out of them. Katy is Katy. Sarah Beth needs thicker skin. She will probably never get this opportunity again. She needs to let things go.
Anyone thinking Katy did anything wrong needs to re-watch last night’s footage. She was afraid (which is tragic but it happens) and wanted to go home. We see it every year from someone. I felt bad for her until she said, in not going to win anyway so what’s the point
[COMMENT REMOVED DUE TO SYSTEM-DETECTED USE OF MULTIPLE USER NAMES]
Sorry folks but to my ears it appeared so many singers that sung they were yelling their lyrics and yet the judges put them through. I don’t think there are many contestants this season that interest me except for a couple of the guys. As for the girl who went home, I could have cared less as she was not that good of a singer.
I just wasn’t that impressed by most of the singers. Quite a few left that I thought should never have made it as far as they did. I hate how they choose to showcase a select few and the rest barely got any screen time.
Regarding Sarah specifically, if she didn’t have the heart to do this then don’t waste my time. I also feel like what Katy said was not bad and if she can’t handle such an innocuous comment she’d have never made it in the industry unless she toughened up.
I am good with jokes usually, and don’t think people should take them too personally. (Will Smith overreacted.) However, sometimes a joke at the expense of someone’s feelings (one who is not yet trained or calloused to be in the spotlight of stardom) is not okay. Especially when it’s someone who may be nervous and vulnerable to be away from home and embarking on this journey. If Katy had been a little more respectful and encouraging, maybe Sarah Beth would have been more comfortable staying.
I don’t know she didn’t seem all that interested in competing in the first place so this is probably for the best
Just curious why “American” has been removed from the American Idol stage backdrop? We do still live in America, right?
Time to replace katy Perry. The show needs to be about the contestants, not Katy always trying to be the center of attention!
I just read an article about how We’ Ani was hurt about what Katy said after We’s performance on Sunday night in the top 20 show. You could see the hurt on We’s face. Katy never said a word about the performance but chose to insinuate that another contestant had not been voted through that deserved it more. Luke was guilty also. Lionel tried to save the day in his remarks. I have spoken up for Katy in the past, but this time is unacceptable. It’s time for Katy to leave.
