Six seasons down, one more season to go?
Big Bang Theory spinoff Young Sheldon has completed production on Season 6 amid rumblings that the previously ordered Season 7 will be its last.
“That’s a wrap on Season 6,” series star Raegan Revord, who plays the boy genius’ twin sister Missy, wrote on Instagram. “Even after all this time I can’t believe I get to be a part of this incredible show surrounded by the most loving and supportive cast and crew! See you this summer for Season 7!”
As TVLine was first to report, preliminary talks have begun, at least internally, about whether Season 7 will mark the end of the single-camera offshoot. Assuming the prequel’s narrative keeps at a steady pace, Sheldon will turn 14 during Season 7 — the age where, per Big Bang‘s previously established timeline, the future Nobel Prize winner moves from Medford, Texas, to Pasadena, Calif., to begin his graduate studies at CalTech University. That same year, Sheldon’s father George dies and older brother Georgie marries for the first time.
“There are certainly things we know we want to hit next season, and there are certain things where, if it’s the end versus if it’s just [another season], those things might be different,” executive producer Steve Holland explained to TVLine earlier this month. “It’s not my decision to make. I don’t think we’ll know for a while, but I don’t think it will effect the first half of [Season 7]; I think it will play out the same either way. But as we get near the end, I think it will play out differently depending on whether this is, or is not, the final season.”
Another factor that could determine the outcome is a potential writers’ strike. Amid rumblings of the Writers Guild of America’s first possible work stoppage since 2007-08 — a strike that interrupted Big Bang in its first season, resulting in a shortened freshman run of 17 episodes — Holland could foresee a scenario where an eighth season is necessary to bring the spinoff to a satisfactory close.
“That’s certainly another thing that throws a wrench into it — if [a strike] happens, how long it goes on, and how many episodes this next season will end up being,” he said. “Those are questions we can’t even answer; we’d just be speculating. So we certainly have a plan in place of where we’re aiming [to get] next season with some understanding, and some flexibility, that this may or may not be the end.”
For its part, CBS will no doubt want to keep Young Sheldon going beyond Season 7. Season to date, the show is averaging 9.3 million total viewers and a 0.9 demo rating (with Live+7 playback), up a smidgen in viewers from last season while down just a tenth in the demo. Among all TV comedies, it is the most-watched and trails only its lead-out, Ghosts, in the demo.
Young Sheldon‘s 22-episode Season 6 resumes Thursday, March 30, with Episode 16. A supersized, one-hour finale consisting of back-to-back episodes is scheduled for May 18; additional CBS finale dates can be found here.
I’ll miss Young Sheldon, but I think season seven should be the end.
Just reboot the show where he goes off to California and his adventure there.
YES!
Can anybody say Different World????
And recast Sheldon, of course.
That was my thoughts exactly.
I don’t think there is anyway that this series ends after Season 7. That is, unless there is some sort of spinoff where the show continues on without Sheldon. They could change the name of the series to, “No, Sheldon”.
I like Craig T. Nelson, but I hate Dale on Young Sheldon. I liked the quirkiness of Dr. John Sturgis (Wallace Shawn).
Mary is really starting to get on my nerves. I have no problem with her religious beliefs, but I do have a problem with the way she tries to control her family with those beliefs. I have a bigger problem with her trying to impose them on her grandchild.
But that is how a lot of religious people act in real life…
Some, but not all. Most people are middle of the road people and not extremists, regardless of what their beliefs are. It is just that extremists regardless of topic seem to have the loudest voices.
In one of the early seasons of TBBT, Missy was an attorney as an adult but I don’t recall this ever being addressed again. Will she ever be given credit for heading in that direction?
She was never an attorney.
Raj’s sister Priya was an attorney.
Despite being excoriated for saying this earlier, I think they SHOULD conclude “Young Sheldon,” send him off to college, and segue the rest of the cast into either “The Coopers,” or even better “Young (Baby) CC.” Sheldon can guest star when the plot calls for it, and we can continue the adventures of the family we’ve grown to know and love.
Just because he’s turning 14 during S7, it doesn’t mean his dad has to die shortly thereafter. They could easily have it happen later on when he’s nearly 15 but still 14. They could easily get 2 more seasons if they wanted.
Hopefully a writers strike can be averted. I think they should stay in check and plan to send Sheldon to Cal Tech and end the series. I don’t necessarily think we need to see George die. His passing can be a post YS thing. We know from BB it is going to happen but we don’t actually need to see it.
Young Sheldon schould Continue with a Season 8……one of the best drama on tv
Right know….The whole cast is doing
Dong a wonderful.Job too….
I enjoy the show! Doesn’t matter what was said in Big Bang theory, which I loved too. Young Sheldon can go on many seasons. I would watch them and the reruns over and over again.
It’s a prequel can’t change things
You obviously don’t know TV works.
George doesn’t have an affair (Mary in wig trying to get marriage back on track) George dies just before Sheldon turns 15 (can get another season with him)
Story continues with Sheldon away at Cal Tech
I’m currently rewatching BBT and in a season 4 or 5 episode Sheldon talks about his parents marriage problems saying, I quote “the woman dives into religion (Mary) and the man dives into a bottle blonde bartender who tries to buy my love with action figures”
George Sr cheated on Mary. We know that.
I’m SO tired of how characters treat their mothers! If talked to my mom or treated her disrespectful ~ I would be grounded for a month! MOM is no longer on ~ Golden Girls or Two and a half men~thank God! Swoozie on Call me Kat~ is SO disrespectful! I won’t watch it anymore! I thought it was funny at first
Put. The. Oxy. Down. We can’t understand what you are babbling in about.
But also according to the timeline set in the BBT Mary struggles after Georges death and Georgie steps up as the man of the house by supporting her. We really don’t know what went on with Missy during those years although in the beginning she’d be in High School. They could keep the series going for several more seasons with those characters even if Sheldon is moved to the background a bit. If the network, producers and writers want to keep the show going there are a lot of ways to do that without cancelling Sheldon’s history as it was presented in BBT
Young sheldon acts bratty and has zero respect for his parents and others.
Being smart is no excuse for disrespect.
Yes it’s only tv but it’s still wrong.
I completely agree! Thank you for saying it
If the show ends at season 7, fine. Sheldon has become insufferable, annoying.
Have a spin-off: the Adventures of Georgie and Memaw’s Laundry Mat/Secret Gambling Den and the Last Video Store in Texas.
One thing they haven’t shown from canon is when Sheldon was a visiting professor in Europe. I guess they are skipping over that?
There have been a few viewpoints that I have read concerning the future of Paige.
I would suggest a more happier outcome (if the writers haven’t already pre-determined the outcome).
Dr. Sturgis and Paige are two characters in the show that should be able to help one another (both fed up with academia), so they decide to pack up and travel together throughout the world. New spinoff…Smart and Smarter.
That true his dad can die when he almost 15 . Season 8 14- 14.5 and season 9 being 14.5 to 15. Has him going to the hospital and cut off. We know what happened. Next. And the dad is thought of as both dead and alive. sheldon like the cat. Both dead and alive.
I love the show but the relationship between Georgie and Mandy has made the show even more interesting. When Sheldon was a child he was funny but as a teenager he’s not funny anymore. I’m enjoying the storylines about other members of the family.
Greetings! I’m the guy that occasionally phones you and lets you know what you are doing great….and not so great. I keep reminding you that I was born and raised (70 years) in Southeast Texas and my phone number area code is still 409…just like the Coopers! Anyway, when Mandy was applying for the weather girl job, you had Lufkin way out of position on one map and closer to the actual location on another. Final thought…get rid of Sheldon and continue the series without him. He can pop in once in awhile but the show is really great when it is about Georgie and Mandy as well as the others. We haven’t seen Pastor Rob a whole lot and his wife has totally vanished! Craig Nelson adds something special to the show, too!! Thanks!!!
