True Detective Season 4 Lands HBO Premiere Date — Watch A New Trailer
We've solved the case of True Detective's return date: Season 4 of the HBO crime anthology will premiere Sunday, Jan. 14 at 9/8c, TVLine has learned, with episodes also streaming on Max.
HBO has also released a new teaser trailer for Season 4, dubbed True Detective: Night Country, with Oscar winner Jodie Foster and Kali Reis playing a mismatched pair of Alaska police detectives ("I thought they hated each other," a colleague mutters) who are faced with a number of dead bodies frozen "into a giant block of flesh." Their investigation leads to the discovery of a mysterious symbol and ritualistic dolls — ooh, very Rust Cohle — and a shiver-inducing walk through a murky ice cave. Plus, it's kinda nice to see Foster back in Clarice Starling mode, isn't it? (HBO boss Casey Bloys first unveiled the new trailer at Code Conference on Wednesday.)
"To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice," per the official description. Joining Foster and Navarro in the cast are Fiona Shaw (Killing Eve), John Hawkes (Deadwood) and Christopher Eccelston (The Leftovers).
Issa López (Tigers Are Not Afraid) will serve as writer, director and showrunner, with Oscar winner Barry Jenkins (The Underground Railroad) on board as an executive producer. (Series creator Nic Pizzolatto, who wrote or co-wrote every episode of the previous three seasons, will not be creatively involved in Season 4 but still retains an EP credit.)
Season 4 was originally slated to debut this year and was even included in a sizzle reel of Max's 2023 programming slate, with a teaser trailer saying it was "coming this year." But it was quietly pushed back last month, joining many TV shows that have been delayed due to the dual (now settled!) writers strike and (still ongoing) actors strike.
