New Rookie Spinoff Inching Closer To Pilot Order — Who Would You Cast In Lead Role?
Alexi Hawley's next spinoff of The Rookie reportedly is inching closer to a pilot order at ABC.
Word of the potential offshoot — set in Washington state and following a male cop who is entering his "second act" — first spread back in November. Now, Deadline is reporting, The Rookie North (wait, is that really the title?) is "gaining momentum" and could secure a pilot order once the lead role is cast.
The title character, potentially named Alex and in his 40s/50s, is described as "a former overachiever who becomes a rookie cop after his life did not go as planned."
"The engine of the show is 'reinvention,'" Hawley told TVLine in April, "and the way in on it is you get to a stage in your life where you're unhappy where you are and want to make a change."
Other characters to be cast include a pair of training officers, other rookies, and a police chief.
"I feel really good about the script," Hawley shared with me when last we spoke. "Ultimately, we're waiting to hear what the needs are [at ABC], but I feel very positive about it.
"My caveat, said with a genuine laugh, is that I also felt very positive about Season 3 of [Netflix's] The Recruit, and it ended up not happening," Hawley acknowledged. "But look, it's apples and oranges. We just got a Season 8 on Rookie, the show works really well for [ABC].... Beyond that, it's out of my hands."
The Rookie previously spun off the Niecy Nash-Betts-led series The Rookie: Feds (wait, was that really the title?), which followed an ensemble of FBI agents and debuted in September 2022. It was cancelled at ABC after just one season.
