The CW is reopening the book on The Librarians, ordering a spinoff of the TNT series five years after its cancellation. [pmc_inline_gallery]
Aptly titled The Librarians: The Next Chapter, the sequel will center on “a ‘Librarian’ from the past, who time traveled to the present, and now finds himself stuck here,” according to the cryptic logline. “When he returns to his castle, which is now a museum, he inadvertently releases magic across the continent. He is given a new team to help him clean up the mess he made, forming a new team of Librarians.”
Original series creator Dean Devlin — who is also behind Amazon Freevee’s Leverage revival — serves as executive producer and showrunner. As for whether any familiar faces will return, CW entertainment president Brad Schwartz tells TVLine that they are “one-hundred percent” trying to get at least one original Librarians cast member to at least put in a cameo and pass the proverbial baton.
The Librarians franchise started off as a series of made-for-TV movies headlined by ER vet Noah Wyle. He played titular librarian Flynn Carsen in 2004’s Quest for the Spear, 2006’s Return to King Solomon’s Mines and 2008’s Curse of the Judas Chalice, and later recurred on The Librarians, which aired for four seasons between 2014 and 2018. The series starred Rebecca Romijn (as Eve Baird), Christian Kane (as Jacob Stone), Lindy Booth (as Cassandra Killian), John Kim (as Ezekiel Jones) and John Larroquette (as Jenkins).

Only 1 of the original team, and it’s only for a cameo?!? My excitement is substantially diminished.
Agreed! It’s like Charmed redux which was another horrible concept…no thanks indeed. If these networks have run out of any original ideas for good new shows, why not just do a bunch of TV movies with all the great shows that never had a resolved ending from a cliffhanger like Timeless did? The Lost World, Revolution…the list goes on.
I agree 100%. I won’t watch if the original team isn’t in the entire series. If a person has never seen the series they probably won’t mind. But as a “seasoned” fan, who’s loved every character, it’s a no-go for me.
The story said “at least” one of the original team “at least” for a cameo. I read that as meaning that if they can, they will get more than one as a regular cast member.
Honestly, I’d prefer we get a 3rd season of Leverage: Redemption.
Couldn’t agree more. It has been quiet on that front :(
Yes, dying for season 3 of Leverage: Redemption!!! We need it!!!
100% AGREE
January 2024 will be a very distinctive month.
Let’s go! I loved this show.
Happy to hear this. Librarians was a great show. All the actors had good chemistry between each other. I hope the new series has the same. It would really be good if all of the original cast could be in the most of the episodes.
With Executive Producer / Showrunner Dean Devlin and Mark Roskin on board, this is going to be good!
Now if the studios can just agree to the writes demands, and end the writers strike this can move forward even faster!
At CW? So 13 episodes and a swift cancellation ^^
I loved the movies but didn’t get into the series. Maybe it’s time to give it another go.
I struggled with the series because Rebecca Romijn is a really terrible actress. Eventually, though, I got past my distaste for her and really enjoyed it.
Yeah, why did it have to be the CW?
What network did you have in mind? And what makes you think actually they’d pick it up? Be grateful that it’ll air on a free TV network at all.
Seems that the CW is purchasing alot of established series both from the UK and Canada to fill the void of their scripted shows and possibly introduced America to these series. It’s lazy if you ask me
Is it lazy if they’re good shows? (Yes, I’m Canadian).
You mean the same network that kept bringing back the DC shows despite making almost no money off of them? Homes, please.
They are still entertaining and at least they are decent for our children. And if your honest I’ll bet most everyone had watched them numerous times. Even after complaining about them.
we don’t know what the New Owners have planned … they might be willing to ‘hold’ where the old Paramount/WB people would ‘Fold”
I hope Noah Wyle & John Larroquette are coming back
I only watched (every episode about 3 times) to see Cassandra! The others were always the same thing every week. Elliot would hit someone and Ezekiel would steal something and Eve would have to show everyone who was the boss. Even Flynn got tired of that and was only seen in a few episodes toward the end. And then the only way he could keep her quiet was to kiss her!
Almost the same happened when Wyle became the “boss” of the Leverage crew. Parker was the redeeming quality of that! AND I hope some more episodes of Leverage-Redemption are to follow SOON!!!
John Larroquette is a bit busy bring back Dan Fielding on Night Court so I doubt it.
This could be great if they find the right actors for the new roles. (Too bad they can’t just use the original cast.)
I loved the Librarians series and I loved Leverage Redemption. I’d prefer this be a continuation of the librarians like redemption is for leverage but if it’s the same vibe it should still be a good show.
I will only watch it if Christian Kane returns. I couldn’t stand Lindy Booth’s character . Majority of the cast are busy with other shows. I just don’t know how they will pull it off
If you haven’t seen Christian Kane’s show Almost Paradise, you’re in for a treat. He’s working on season 2 of that right now I believe.
Christian.has already finished filming season.2 and has been home for at least 3 months. It is due to air hopefully within the next couple months.
Oh, I certainly hope so! Really love Christian Kane.
YES! Loved that show. I know John Larroquette and Noah Wyle are otherwise involved. But possibly bring back Christian Kane and/or Rebecca?
Kane works with Wyle on Leverage redemption-though it has yet to be renewed.
And Rebecca is on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Of course with the writers’ strike, everything is up in the air anyway.
It shouldn’t be too hard to get Lindy Booth back given she just spent the last 2 years playing a background extra on The Flash.
I enjoyed the original Librarians. Time will tell about the sequel.
I never watched the original, so I’m probably going to skip the sequel (though I said the same thing about Quantum Leap and ended up loving the new version after not watching the first one)
Yes!!!! I loved the Librarians. I just have concerns that it will be on the CW. I will definitely try to DVR it, but I would have loved to had seen it announced for “Prime” and paired with Leverage: Redemption.
Are they just ordering a pilot or the whole series?
It’s being developed as a series. –Mgmt.
I’m willing to give it a try. I’ve watched the whole series from the movies to the TV show. This show reminds me of Warehouse 13. There are always changes when there is a gap between iterations of show. Just look at Leverage which is produced by the same people.
Yes, I would prefer the same show, but they can’t.
I’m SO EXCITED to hear this !!!!!!!!!!! Loved The Librarians and never missed an episode. Can’t wait for this new one !
As great as it would be to get at least a full episode with main 5 I get why it may not happen. I’m just glad the Librarian universe isn’t dead.
Loved the original and look forward to seeing what they do with a reboot. I just hope it isn’t another 13 episodes and done. I was really enjoying Walker Independence and that lasted just one season. Instead of improving on what was already going they start something new. I thought the new owners of the CW were going with golf and reality shows, 2 things that I never ever watch.
Can’t wait to see the new librarians love it
Loved the show I do hope it returns but with at least some of the original cast
The movies were fine, particularly the vampire one with Stana Katic, but the series had one too many librarians. John Harlan Kim should have been a recurring thief and nemesis and Christian Kane should have been a guardian to Lindy Booth, but just as smart. The romance between Romijn and Wyle did not work at all either.
Maybe this will be scaled back and be less over-the-top?
Considering all the shows that the CW has axed in the last couple of years, this really surprises me. I’ll keep an eye on it and most likely check it out when it premiers.
I hope they do justice. It is one of my favourite series.
My only problem is CW. They just dont treat shows with respect and they clearly do not have budget anymore and they dont care if they do a disservice to a franchise…
