This is a pretty strong sign we’re in the Good Place: NBC has renewed afterlife comedy The Good Place for a fourth season, TVLine has learned. Season 4’s episode order “is yet to be determined,” per the network, but the previous three seasons have run for 13 episodes each.
“Congratulations to Mike Schur and an exceptional cast and crew, all of whom collaborate to create a thoughtful, mind-bending and hysterical series unlike anything else on television,” NBC co-presidents of scripted programming Tracey Pakosta and Lisa Katz said in a statement. “We can’t wait to see what unexpected stories the new season will bring.”
Kristen Bell stars as Eleanor, who dies and finds herself in a wondrous afterlife where her every wish is granted. There, she meets ethics professor Chidi (William Jackson Harper), British socialite Tahani (Jameela Jamil) and Jacksonville DJ Jason (Manny Jacinto) — but they soon discover that the Good Place may not be all it’s cracked up to be. Ted Danson co-stars as afterlife architect Michael, and D’Arcy Carden plays perky virtual assistant Janet.
Debuting in 2016, The Good Place opened Season 3 with 3.1 million total viewers and a 1.1 demo rating, and was rock steady from there, averaging 2.8 mil and a 0.8. This fall, it tied lead-in Superstore as NBC’s No. 1-rated comedy, edging out even the Will & Grace revival and easily topping I Feel Bad. It garnered some awards buzz this year, too, including an Emmy nomination for Danson for Lead Actor in a Comedy. (It’s also TVLine’s pick for 2018’s best comedy, by the way.)

I take it they’re okay with Kristen Bell splitting her time between two shows.
13 episode comedy and 8 episode drama…she probably has time for a third.
If I recall correctly she said on one of the podcasts her (and others) contract allows her to. It was part of the reason she signed on.
I suspect Veronica Mars will be finished filming a few months before they start up again. I’m sure it’s usually June time they film.
They’re also technically contracted for 16.
Yes! Glad it’s staying! Though I believe it’s likely to end after the fifth season. Based on the premise of the show, I don’t see it continuing for years to come.
If they feel like 4 seasons is enough to tell the story and it ends with that, I’m good with that. Trust the writers!
This right here! I’m so sick of shows that I love vastly declining in quality because people demand more story when there isn’t more story to tell. If the writers are done after season 4, then they’re done!
It’s true. They’ve managed to reinvent themselves several times now in surprising and wonderful ways, but I imagine there are only so many times that trick will work.
THANK YOU NBC! Christmas came early this year!
This is the best news I’ve heard all month! Hooray for NBC not cancelling one of my favorite shows for a change!
Really?
I tried watching the first few episodes of this stupid, inaine show, and it was actually dumber than the other below-average comedies out there!
Ah well, I guess there has to be some shows for the non-thinkers out there!
Sorry you don’t understand it. Your loss.
Moral philosophy and metaphysical exploration isn’t everybody’s cup of tea. I’m sure there are other shows out there more to your tastes.
Sad to say, 2 Broke Girls got cancelled.

Y’know…it’s possible to say you don’t agree with a decision and don’t care for something, without bashing the people who do like a show. ::eyeroll: As for me, I’m forking excited!
I fail to understand why people who don’t like a show make time in their busy lives to post comments about it. There are plenty of shows I don’t like. I don’t bother reading the articles about them, much less make comments & insult the “non-thinkers” who do enjoy them. Maybe that’s just me.
You’re not wrong, but the people who reply with “I’m sorry if you’re not smart enough to understand it” are just as bad.
Except when it’s true.
I have to respectfully disagree here .Anyone that attempts to prove their intellectual superiority by their taste in TV shows deserves everything they get. Forking Great News BTW!!!
While I agree that the philosophical discussions don’t rise to the intellectual level that they did on “Kevin Can Wait,” I think it’s a good thing that there’s a show that discusses ethics and philosophy that appeals to the more lowbrow among us.
I assume I don’t have to add a “sarcasm” tag to the above, do I?
It’s a show about Philosophy and discusses great thinkers and theories with comedy. Definitely above average.
Watch more than the first few episodes… It’s a good show from the start in my opinion, but just gets better leading into the finale of season 1.
yay! cant wait!
Not really a surprise but great news just the same. Congrats to all involved!
We should sit back and take this in.
So many quality shows don’t get the ratings to survive and they are gone far too soon. This is a relatively rare example of a smart, funny, and beautifully executed series that is actually being given the room to breathe by a broadcast network.
Now, a little cheer, and back to the world.
:-)
Excellent! Best “Big Five” network comedy out there.
Not really feeling this current season but glad it will be returning. How many more seasons can they milk out of this show..they are starting to grasp at straws already
Yassss!😝😝😝
I think this was expected and welcomed by many.
Hopefully, this show ends next season. Though I strongly like it, I feel it’s close to peaking creatively. Better to end on top, then at the bottom.
Can we all agree that Jason had the best delivery? And long running joke? Bortles!
This entire cast is damn funny. There isn’t a weak link. I’m forking excited
SHUT THE FORK UP!
It’s only 7am here but your avatar has made my day.
Really? After this season I figured they’d just drop it. Can’t stand what they’re doing in the 3rd season
I’m still P.O.-ed at NBC for rescuing “Taxi” from ABC, then cancelling it a season later. (Yes, I hold a long grudge!) But this news almost makes up for it. This is my favourite show on TV in years, and it deserves another season. Just when I think they can’t top themselves, they do an episode like this season’s hilarious “Donkey Doug.”
I actually laughed out loud during the entire thing. How many times does a TV comedy really make you do that these days? Thanks NBC. Now if you could just get the surviving Taxi cast back for a reboot…
I hope “The Good Place” gets just one more season so it can reach 65 episodes.
Also, I’ve been wanting a cable network to acquire reruns of “The Good Place” for some time. It’s too bad I don’t have a subscription to Hulu in order to watch “TGP”, which is the reason why.
FORKING AWESOME!!!!!!
I love this show. Smart, hilarious and unique. It’s my favorite show! You never know where the plot will go next.
Great news! LOVE this show!!
Made my day!
İ only love a few comedy shows to watch. ( The Kids Are Alright, Mom, Murphy Brown, Life İn Pieces, Rel, The Simpsons, The Good Place, Superstore, Brooklyn Nine Nine) And NBC’S comedies mostly in it.
Absolutely one of the smartest, funniest shows ever made. Each character is excellent and the actors are wonderful. I could watch this show all day. I never know where it’s going and I’ve watched the series twice (had to get my wife into it!) Please keep going!!
I’m so glad its renewed it is a great show with great actors
