Supernatural‘s final season is pausing sooner than expected: Executive producer Andrew Dabb announced on Twitter that the March 23 episode will be the last fresh original to air for some time.
As a result of the coronavirus-fueled production shutdown, “This will be our last episode for awhile,” Dabb wrote. He later clarified that although the series completed filming through Episode 18 — this week’s installment is Episode 13 — “our visual effects and sound departments have closed because of the outbreak. So, right now, the episodes can’t be finished.”
That said, the #SPNFamily won’t be completely without the show during the break, with “some special treats coming along the way to help us all get through this,” Dabb teased.
At the time of the shutdown, Supernatural was just two episodes shy of completing filming on its 20-episode swan-song season. But never fear, “we, The CW, and Warner Bros. fully intend to return and finish the series,” Dabb assured fans. “It’s not a matter of ‘if,’ it’s a matter of ‘when.'” [pmc_inline_gallery]
This week’s episode, titled “Destiny’s Child,” marks the return of Genevieve Padalecki as the demon Ruby. Per the official synopsis, “a search for the one thing that may give the Winchesters an edge against God leads Sam and Dean to Jo’s (guest star Danneel Ackles) door and to a secret that may have died with Ruby. Meanwhile, Castiel asks Jack to do the unthinkable to help the brothers in their quest.”
Update: The March 30 episode will be replaced by episodes of Whose Line Is It Anyway?
Man of all the seasons for this to happen.
God doesn’t want the Winchesters to win, so he threws and pandemic at us to stop them.
Tact: a keen sense of what is appropriate or tasteful.
Haha nice one. Well said.
Good one. :)
I have my own series finale in my head (posted in the last Supernatural article comments), so I’m good. Probably better than what Dabb has planned anyway.
I thought they were stopping now so they could have the final five episodes run uninterpreted rather than show all they had finished filming and have the last two episodes shown six months from now or whenever. Its better, in any case, to have a longer run of new episodes rather then just the last two.
I need this episode i am ready for it
While this is sad that there won’t be anymore episodes for awhile, at least I’m glad to hear that they won’t end the series until they finish all of the episodes that they intended to. I sure do hope the finale will be a good satisfactory one that fans will enjoy, and not any gloom and doom ending. I always remember the series finale for “Quantum Leap” years ago, which really wasn’t an ending because Sam Becket never got home. That’s an ending which I’ve been afraid they are going to do for SN. I hope I’m wrong.
Loved Quantum Leap but hated the ending too. He had a loving wife back home and chose to leave her behind for good. Since he lost his memory during the leaps I always wondered when he was given the choice if he remembered her when he decided.
Huge Sigh of relief.
It’s probably better this way. Instead of coming back for a couple of episodes, they can have a seven episode mini-season when they come back. Hopefully sometime this summer.
Agree. And also allow time to go by to forget this horrible episode tonight with useless characters.
Given how Canada is responding to the current situation, we should probably prepare for a mini-series to air next November during sweeps. Just a guess.
But I have pie….
This makes me wonder how many other shows are well behind on post production. I’d expect any thing effects heavy to be similarly halted.
this is a bit of a different situation since this is the final season, with other shows whatever story arcs left hanging can be wrapped up at the beginning of next season.
Not what I’m saying. If Flash finished filming through episode 20, What episode was post production halted on? They’re always going to run behind by a couple. Which begs the question of what the actual last episodes shown, will be. We were told that Supernatural finished through 18, but it turns out that was only half the story. I’d imagine some other shows will be diving into reruns much sooner than expected.
Episode 13 Destiny Child shows to be showing tonight on my AT&T schedule.
They said after tonight. Meaning episode 14 will be the first absentee.
Yes, they said tonight’s episode will be the last one for a while.
I never trust networks in situations like these… how many times have they promised wrap-up movies or something like that only to pull the rug at the last minute. If it’s going to cost the CW a bunch to ramp up production again just for two episodes, I’m not sure they’ll actually do it. Then again, this isn’t strictly a ‘cancelled’ show – my understanding is that it wasn’t the network’s decision for the series to end. The cast wanted out. – so maybe there’s a financial benefit for the network to continue. Hopefully they do actually find a way to finish this properly.
They’re not going to be “ramping up” anything. Everything is just in pause. The production will just pick up where it left off. Everyone above the line is still under contract, I’d imagine. And anyone below the line can’t go off to work somewhere else, because everything is shut down. This isn’t even remotely the same as the situations you’re talking about. And also, this is CW. When was the last time they just dropped something that was beyond it’s first season. Especially one of their premiere shows. Everyone’s paranoia over this is irrational.
Just because I’m a stickler for this kind of thing…
.
Beauty and The Beast
.
Heart of Dixie
.
Reign
.
90210
.
I’m not sure if Gossip Girl ended on its own or was axed.
Can’t speak to 90210, but every one of those others shows had a pre-announced and pre-planned final season. Not a one got dropped like a bad habit.
They were canceled. That counts in my books. The guy who is or was running the CW talked about a 6th and final season for 90210. People got excited then it was axed. Hart of Dixie tried to wrap things up because they feared being canceled. B&TB as well. Reign didn’t plan to end either but they knew the ratings weren’t good so they went into S4 thinking it might be the last. They found out they were canceled during the filming of the finale. So maybe you could scratch those off. Though they didn’t end by choice. They didn’t get to tell their show’s entire story. So it’s a little unfair to dismiss then IMO.
The choice of most other networks would have been to cut the shows short without any chance for the writers to craft an ending of any sort. Even if it falls short of grand ambition, I’ll take a quickly assembled wrap up over the cold knife of abrupt end. If you ever watched “The Glades”, you’ll know what I’m talking about. Or Scorpion. Or Alcatraz. Or Firefly (though they got a reprieve). Or Freaks and Geeks. Or…we’ll, that list could go on forever, Because it’s the standard approach. The fact that Hart of Dixie even got a shortened final season, wouldn’t have been true on most any other network. The fact that those other shows who struggled year in an year out for ratings, got the chance to see writing on the wall and prepare for it, wouldn’t have happened on most other networks. There’s a difference between the floor dropping out and a slow roll toward the cliff.
The CW is the best network at allowing shows to wrap-up or giving them an announced final season. Look at the shows just this year that have announced final seasons from the CW. Arrow, The 100 and Supernatural. As for Heart of Dixie – it got a tidy if rushed ending but it got one. No other network is as good about allowing shows to craft fianls as the CW.
Yes, but the shows you mention didn’t run for 15 years either! I am sure that there will be a grand finale. They ended my second favorite show The Magicians on SyFy after only 5 years, I’m cancelling cable after the final episode of Supernatural airs. There is nothing I can’t watch on Netflix, Amazon or the CW app. they took the last best show away.
It’s not just a “pause,” though. There was an article on here or on deadline a few days ago, just as news began to break about all the shows shutting down production, that said many shows would be forced to have shortened seasons because “ramping up” production after the shutdown would be too expensive. If it was just a “pause,” then all the shows would continue on as normal when it becomes safe. That’s not the case. Look at Superstore — they got shut down just before filming the pivotal farewell episodes for Amy. Now, we just have to cross our fingers that there won’t be a scheduling conflict so America Ferrera can come back for her farewell, which has to be pushed to season 6 now. The same kind of thing can happen with Supernatural. The actors already have gigs lined up. When the quarantine is over, I’m sure these new productions will want to start “on time” and expect their actors to be on set when contracted. Scheduling kills these kinds of wrap-up events. I’m not saying it’s not going to happen. In fact, given that the CW wants more Supernatural and the cast has shown nothing but dedication over the years, I’m more confident that this’ll happen than pretty much any other promise of a wrap-up. But that doesn’t mean it’s guaranteed, no matter what anyone says. Until production starts, I’ll be skeptical.
According to the info on my tv episode 14 titled “Last Holiday” is supposed to show on 3/30. Why does it say that?
Most likely b/c they just announced it; so the cable providers haven’t had a chance to update their schedules
After this episode , I’m convinced Jack going to eden and the only person to have gone there since the fall, is significant, also billy and death seem to be an enemy not ally after the empty said billy had her own agenda. I have a feeling god and amara will be put in the empty and sealed away there. Jack is clearly growing into a god like being, that ball of light remind you guys of god? Am I alone in thinking tha this whole god as the enemy thing is just a rouse to find his successor in Jack?
I guess they figure it’s better to come back with seven episodes instead of just two.
I’m glad to hear this for series fans. I’ve been thinking of some of the shows that were supposed to be ending and hoping something like this would be done for fans.
I don’t get it. They usually come back from the Holiday break with 3-5 episodes before going on another break, and the plan this season was to release 3 episodes in March. Next weeks episode, Last Holiday, is scheduled to air. Why couldn’t they stick to the original plan? COVID-19 has nothing to do with it. What changed?
It’s called post production. An episode isn’t ready to air just because it’s been filmed. There’s editing, SFX, ADR, and other departments that the episode has to go through before being ready to air. Those departments are closed down. So none of the raw footage filmed can get put in the blender with the rest of the “ingredients” to bring you that Supernatural Smoothie so to speak.
I love supernatural i need season 5 and 15 i have all the others !!
Is good take care the actors but is sad even because is the final season supernatural is one series that you can watch always everyday also I am still watching in the tv the old episodes be healthy people we see you soon god first
I wish they would continue the series ,the are good,
If after investing FIFTEEN YEARS In a series, for there not to be an ending would be devastating! Where’s the precedent in that? People comment that it might be cost prohibitive. If so, Netflix has appropriated other series and since it airs on Netflix, if it came down to the unimaginable, maybe, well …
If you are going to depict military personnel, PLEASE do so correctly. In S9, E2, you put PFC rank on a woman who announced herself as Sergeant, which is two ranks higher than a PFC. she also had her braid hanging down her back, which is absolutely a NOGO.
Appreciate some intelligent inquiry into your depictions. SFC(P) Eyer, Retired US Army.
Cynthia, those are some good points. However, nobody cares but you. It’s not reality, it’s entertainment television.
Im just watching them all again from season 1 until it airs again sooner than later was just getting to the good part
