Two days after tearing President Donald Trump to shreds in his opening monologue, Stephen Colbert began Wednesday’s Late Show by admitting that he might have gone a step too far.
“If you saw my monologue Monday, you know that I was a little upset at Donald Trump for insulting a friend of mine,” Colbert told his audience, according to a transcript released by CBS. “At the end of that monologue, I had a few choice insults for the president in return. I don’t regret that. He, I believe, can take care of himself. I have jokes, he has the launch codes. So it’s a fair fight.”
Though he said he would absolutely “do it again,” Colbert admitted that he would probably “change a few words that were cruder than they needed to be.”
“I’m not going to repeat the phrase, but I just want to say for the record: Life is short, and anyone who expresses their love for another person — in their own way — is, to me, an American hero,” he continued. “I think we can all agree on that. I hope even the president and I can agree on that. Nothing else. But that.”
We’re guessing that Colbert was choosing not to repeat the part where he told Trump, “The only thing your mouth is good for is being Vladimir Putin’s c–k holster.” It was easily his most savage insult; the others, including calling him the “presi-dunce,” were mostly just playful puns.
Watch video of Colbert’s monologue above, then drop a comment with your thoughts on his revision.
If his name was O’Reilly or Hannity, and they told that joke? They would be fired before the end of that show. But since Colbert is on the “Correct” side, an (Insincere) apology will do just fine.
Conservatives never are given the chance to apologize
I wouldn’t exactly put Colbert’s Trump comments in the same category as O’Reilly’s sexual harassment allegations. And this really isn’t an apology.
YES! Thank you Andy! It was not an apology and he should not have been asked to make a statement. This is what CBS hired him. Shame on them for not having his back.
He was hired to sling homophobic smears? Is the Trump Hate that strong?
Oh no, you do NOT get to use the “homophobic smears” card to defend someone like frickin’ Trump, especially without any actual homophobic slur thrown. This wasn’t homophobic, it was a crude way to say Trump’s an a** kisser and a puppet. But you wouldn’t know what experiencing homophobia is actually like irl because you’re either a straight person, a closeted keyboard warrior or a self loathing Milowhatsisface type.
As a gay person myself, I kindly ask you to stfu about homophobia and find something else to try validating your trumpist bruised ego. Thanks.
Oh hell no. This straightsplaining of what is homophobic needs to stop. This was not homophobic whatsoever. The only homophobic thing is people assuming that any jokes not involving heteronormative relations are automatically homophobic.
Olivia and Ryan are absolutely correct here.
Olivia, you don’t have the right to tell someone to “STFU” to someone because YOU don’t like what they say. Colbert made a gay slur, pure and simple. He is a HATEFUL, DISGUSTING person. And anyone who defends him is a HATEFUL, DISGUSTING person.
FT! When will trump apologize for being POTUS? Keep it coming Colbert.
So much hate. And answering perceived hate with greater hate?! If all you can see or sling is HATE, you are part of the problem.
(I’m agreeing with David here on “is the… Hate that strong?”)
Olivia, Ryan, and Temperance are wrong. When you insult someone by way of saying that he performs oral sex on another man, that’s homophobia. Don’t redefine the term simply because it doesn’t suit your narrative in this instance.
@Mel: actually, I do. Just as much as you can call people disgusting because you disagree. Sue me, idk?
You’re right, it’s not. A apology require contrition. And it seems Colbert has none.
Snowflake
It wasn’t an apology. Why would he apologize? He could have gone about a illion times further an still had the moral high ground (after all this is Trump, the lowest scuz on Earth).
For the record, I am standing and applauding you right now. Well said, Andy!
Yes, Andy is right O’Reily and Donald Trump have done MUCH worse than Colbert said. Also, Trump seems to be able to dish it out but can’t take it. He has Earned the huge backlash.
[DELETED FOR LANGUAGE]
@ Diane – Wow you lack of intelligence is showing. Did someone hit a nerve.
I believe both have said, and done, much worse, both on and off the air.
[DELETED FOR LANGUAGE]
Colbert is a comedian and told a joke. O’Reilly and Hannity are news reporters/political commentators. I wouldn’t expect O’Reilly or Hannity to be telling jokes on their shows. So your comment is false equivalency.
If a conservative comedian told those kinds of jokes about Obama would you still think it was okay? Like him or not, he is the president of the United States. Respect the office if not the man.
Oh please, conservative comedians and political commentators said far worse “jokes” about President Obama and were you going around on articles about them saying “respect the office?”
Name one that was public on tv
I used to believe that, but with this man who is making a mockery of our Country nope. Obviously those who voted for him don’t believe that either or they wouldn’t have voted the self center clueless sexual predator.
[DELETED FOR LANGUAGE]
It is hard to respect the office when the man inhabiting it doesn’t.
I agree Eli; total double standard and stinks of hypocrisy and pure hatred. Wow, these comments are so hateful. Get over it already, he won.
So in your mind sexual assault is the same as exercising the right to free speech. OK, good to know.
Are you serious? Hannity and O’Reilly consider(ed) themselves “Real News” whereas The Late Show is a Vatiety/Comedy show. Get the difference? People watch The Late Show for entertainment. People watch(ed) …(yes the past tense makes me giggle a little bit each time….ah Dharma) Hannity and O’Reilly to “educate” themselves on what is happening in the world. Again, do you see the difference?
As for the apology… Not needed. That moment was the release I needed after learning that Mr. Trump was elected. Stephen Colbert said everything I wanted to say but did not have anyone to say it to. He said everything I wanted to say when I heard that Mr. Trump supported a bill that would result in millions of people losing health care. Or when he signed the executive order to ban people from certain countries (not a Muslim ban… right). When I heard he wanted to get rid of estate tax which would benefit .02% of the population including The president himself. Or when he accused Presudent Obama of “wire tapp”ing is house. Or when he wanted to cut funding for veterans by cutting Medicaid not to mention the elderly oh and his whole Cabinet is a complete disgrace. And shutting down the Let Girls Learn program. And so many many more things. Those few minutes of that monologue allowed me to breath again. Thank you Stephen Colbert!
All of this. Well said.
I am not even a US citizen but as a decent human being I feel the same way, even if the profound stupidity and bigotry that currently emanates from the US highest people doesn’t affect my daily life (…yet). I can barely imagine the reality of you guys having to endure this numbskull and his clique. I mean, administration.
No one cares what you think, you’re not an American and your country has plenty of problems you should worry about. Hate is/was born from the Democratic party all the above comments of hate prove that. Democrats promote HATE and DESTRUCTION !!!!
*ok i’ll bite, only because it’s getting harder to differentiate trolls from genuine morons who have the right to vote*
Oh yeah, what country is that then? You seem to know a lot about it, please enlighten me.
@ Olivia – unfortunately we do have a few uneducated classless individuals here that are actually granted the right to vote even when they are ignorant to facts. Thanks to people like her, we got stuck with a clueless, mentally unstable, sexual predator.
@Mary unfortunately, we all have them. The US election process is just skewed enough to have the risk of electing a guy like Trump materialize. Some comfort should still be found in the fact that there were still more people who understood that voting is a society project though, and impacts in the long term (climate for instance).
In reality, many democracies are faced with pretty much the same thing these days: “me, my bias and my own interests+short term effects” vs “how can we make the best out of our system so everyone’s dignity and safety is protected+long term effects”.
We’re all there, if it’s of any comfort… >.<
💥💥💥💥BAM❗️❗️💥💥💥💥
Nailed it!
As a Democrat speaking. You don’t know nothing. Snowmen was banished why what was the Democrats doing. So yes it’s probably true about BHO and wiretapping. Govt would never lie to the people.
As a Democrat speaking. You don’t know nothing. Snowmen was banished why what was the Democrats we’re doing.
You’re right. Conservatives meanwhile can straight-up lie about a birth certificate for five years and not get fired. That seems to me to be more of a problem then swearing about the Dumbass-in-Chief.
I know people cry outrage over inappropriate words by a comedian, but lying and sexual assault is okay unless it affects the bottom line.
And your party cheated in the election, your Hillary broke many laws with a private server, press gave debate questions and on and on. You are the pot calling the kettle black. Yall can’t stand the fact your reaping what yall sown. There’s lots of karma headed the Democratic way. Bahahaha
Accurate commentary and funny Diana.
You cannot equate comedy, however crude, with news. Two completely different worlds.
Hypocrits!Where is Lisa Bloom…this case has whitnesses.
Conservatives never actually apologize. Never. Why waste the time,
First, Colbert is a comedian, O’Reilly and Hannity are just jokes. Second, of course they’d get fired from FOX if they made jokes about Trump. If they made a crude joke about Clinton on FOX they’d get raises.
Most conservatives, too high up on that horse, believe they don’t have to. *trump*.
Seriously, they aren’t fired from straight up lying, calling Obama names or sexual harassment unless it affects the bottom line.
Yes bc Trump wasn’t elected for admitting sexual assault or saying pu $$you? Lol. Did you forget about politicians that take Dick pics and are not forgiven while being a Democrat. If you have an (R) in front of your name, all you have to do is ask for forgiveness, and they’re re-elected. Hypocrisy.
Yeah! O’Reilly barely got a chance, after decades of insulting women at the network. CBS should let Steve go after a few decades too.
Waaaaaahhhh!
Usually I would say respect the office even if you can’t respect the person in it but man Trump makes it very hard to even live by that rational. Did Stephen go a little bit too far – probably but I get his frustration however crude it was. For the record, I am glad that Hillary didn’t win and her current media tour complaining about Jim Comey again is so old – someone needs to tell her it’s over, time to move on. That been said, Trump scares me especially where North Korea is concerned. You have 2 very questionable people with access to codes that could start WWIII and there doesn’t seem to be anyone in the current administration with the temperament to calm things down. It’s a strange situation that we find ourselves in when the Chinese might be our salvation. Ugh
Relax. Mattis and McMaster are running the show.
YES Mad Dog Iran hater Saudi Arabia’s #1 fan, Fun times ahead.
Translation: CBS told him to make this kind of statement and not to do something like that again. Everybody can move on now.
Double standard! Colbert should apologize for the totally unnecessary crude comment. The puns were funny but he crossed the line making himself no better than Trump!
I believe that’s this was the whole point. Agree to disagree?
Colbert is a worm.He proved to America his weakness ,deep seeded hatred for our President couldn’t be controlled.
Seriously, what weakness did he display. Ironic he is not alone about the hatred for the amoral man who occupy the WH when he is not golfing at his resort. Could he have chosen his words better, probably, but everything he said was on point.
Gigi, where did the president not grab you? Did he apologize?
When did the Republicans become the champions of firing anyone who made an anti-gay slur? Of course, what Colbert said was not a gay slur. Last I checked fellatio was not limited to the gay community.
If he had said this about President Bush it may have offended me. #45 has said so many nasty comments he is just reaping what he sowed. The Fox News staff made so many disparaging remarks about President Obama and I’m sure none of these people complaining said respect the office.
Obama was not easy to defend…if you know his record.
What record? When he was first elected he at least had knowledge about the Constitution and laws….can’t say that about the clueless wonder who has worked the system to his advantage… you know 5 bankruptcy, screwing over contractors, cheating on his wives not to mention his LIE about Obama birth. His policies today still benefits him and the top 1% but you think you can defend the liar in chief. You might need to do some self reflecting.
What a sad moment when comedians are so vulgar, crass, & disrespectful. I will never watch Colbert again. Sad for our great country.
Trump has said worse. Get off your high horse.
Not about any ones sexual acts or prefernces…with toilet paper??This is not on!y slander but mocking the Gay community!
Grab them by the p…y.
Jim Parsons was Stephen’s guest last night. He said something like, “As a gay man, I didn’t find anything you said offensive.” So why don’t you save your faux concern for the gay community? I’m quite certain you haven’t been waving any rainbow flags before this.
I don’t think he’ll care about your wildly bizarre opinion. I have a much larger problem with anyone that thinks Trump shouldn’t be in an asylum or in jail.
I think John Dickerson has way too much class to say thew things you’ve said publicly. You better be ready to be disrespected since you have no room to talk. I would say you have a face for radio since you have to have special eyeglasses to rest on ears that are at least off by 3 inches where they sit on your head and one pops out like Dunno!
Wanted to clarify my last word which was Dumbo!
When you can’t beat ’em, join ’em. That was Stephen’s point as well. The man in the Oval Office has spent years bullying people, but when someone responds in kind suddenly it’s time to clutch the ole pearls. Ridiculous.
It was disgusting! He should be fired immediately! I don’t care if you are a democrat or republican, you respect the President of the United States. My friends and I will never watch CBS again until he is fired. He is not a comedian. He’s disgusting!
You and your friends sound awful. Why should we respect the president when he doesn’t respect a majority of the country? He’s a joke and he won’t be gone soon enough. I’m sure you weren’t so outraged when they were calling the Obamas gorillas and things like that. Cut it out with the fake outrage.
No, I don’t respect Trump. Ever. And he’s certainly neither a president, or worthy of the title, or worthy of a scintilla of respect from anyone. Ever. Destructive anti-American traitors don’t get respect.
Did you preach that when Obama was in office? Did you stop watching Fox because of their disgusting behavior toward him. Respect is earned, and the twitter fool has not earned it.
You have friends?!?!?!?
Colbert was upset because he didn’t like the way President Trump talked to his Friend?that is no excuse for verbally abusing, degrading making sexual disgusting statements that are not true. Colbert is one sick mental case. If he gets away with this kind of stuff no President or Official will be respected. The left made sure women won’t be causally abused and People were fired …btw…O’Reilly never paid a finger on any of these good diggers.America wants Colbert to learn a lesson He needs to accountable not praised…you don’t use that language when talking about our President no matter how much you have that sick deep seeded hatred.
Respect is given as it is deserved. Trump deserves none, as while he is the President (and the office deserves respect), the man does not. Key difference.
CBS , what Hypocrites!!Colbert actually verbally sexually abused Our President! Those remarks were disgusting to say the least.I guess this will be the norm .Thank you Phonies!
The “tolerant” left at it again……
*snickers* I’m not part of ‘the left’ but you guys are the biggest hypocrits in the universe. And that’s on the rare occasion you make any sense at all.
The left preaches tolerance, except when it comes to people they hate (and man, they are the biggest haters around). They are intolerant. And lazy. And immoral.
We’re tolerant of different choices and lifestyles. We aren’t tolerant of racism, bigotry, and other exclusionary rhetoric. Every time a liberal criticizes or makes fun of a conservative, that’s the go-to statement- “I thought you were tolerant!” Please. It’s pathetic. And we’re the snowflakes?
First I don’t think Colbert needed to be so very crude. I believe he has the right of free speech. I will continue to watch. I hope CBS stands with him. Things in this country will change in time. Hopefully sooner than later.
Unbridled Hate makes you say things you probably shouldn’t, especially if it is a public setting.
What a loser this scum bag is. Obviously your head’s been up Obama’s but because everytime you open your mouth 💩comes. Bet you abuse women too.
Wow you just described #45 to a tee. Sexual predator, liar, spewing sh.t when mouth opens.
Colbert pointed out that the man inhabiting the oval office is subservient to Putin in a culturally appropriate but crude way. Until the rights “moral outrage” spews over to the ad nauseum garbage that spews from tRump’s racist, sexist, facist mouth, they have no right to say anything about Colbert.
Nope, Colbert handled it properly. With all the vitriol and idiocy spewed from conservadick wingnuts over anything that offends their delicate little hearts being put out there, to have the stones to pretend to be offended on behalf of a community (LGBQT) that they otherwise rant and demonize endlessly about is beyond the pale. Colbert handled it correctly with his afterthoughts. Time to focus on more important issues, like the current sword fighting between Trump and that tool in North Korea, which won’t end well at the looks of it.
Full disclosure: I’m a conservative, but not a Trump fan. As a big believer in free speech, I have no problem with what Colbert said. That sort of freedom to criticize the President, even if crudely, is what makes this country great. My problem is that liberals, after Trump supporters started calling for Colbert’s firing, were raising the “free speech cry” when places like Cal Berkley have no problem suppressing conservative speech. You can’t have it both ways.
A conservative Colbert; made the same comment about Pres. Obama. He was fired. In the reverse situation, I guess it wasn’t ” A Fair Fight “. Right Steve?
This is laughable. We set the bar low enought that’s it’s OK for a President to be caught joking about sexual assault and still represent the country, but a comedian can’t make a joke about the intimate relationship about Putin and Trump? Whatever! He could have used the same joke in reference to Conway but you wouldn’t call it hetero phobia. Who’s the snowflake now. He’s a comedian. You don’t get to scream loudness now. Sit. Down.
I defend Colbert’s right to say what he did. I also would defend CBS’s right to ax him for his monologue. We all have the right to free speech, but we also have to own up to what we say, and accept the consequenses of our speech.
That anyone – anyone – can say such things (trying to be funny or not), is a sad statement on our society. Liberal, conservative – matters not. All across our society – from message boards, twitter, and now on public TV – people think using profanity as a common adjective is nothing. It’s totally classless and shows you have zero control on what comes out of your mouth. I guess I was raised differently. Grab some soap people.
I love the people getting bent out of shape over Colbert using a ‘homophobic slur’? Please point out the anti-gay language. You know that straight people also suck c–k right? You know that Trump’s mouth being a holster for Putin’s c–k is an ALLEGORY for being his puppet right? None of that was homophobic. You’re just butt-hurt because your country is a laughingstock and you probably voted for the c#&ksucker in question.
He spoke truth, and his party knows it. No apology needed.
That was no apology. He should be fired. That was too crude. Colbert should let his friend handle the problem himself.
