Mountainhead Trailer: Billionaires Party In The Snow While The World Burns In Succession Creator's HBO Movie
Who can worry about the world falling apart when there's fresh powder to ski on?
HBO has released the official trailer for Mountainhead, a new original movie from Succession creator Jesse Armstrong that debuts Saturday, May 31 at 8/7c on HBO and Max. In the trailer (which you can watch below), we meet four obscenely wealthy tech billionaires on a luxury ski vacation, played by Steve Carell, Jason Schwartzman, Cory Michael Smith and Ramy Youssef. They have a great time together at first, hitting the slopes, crowing about their massive net worths and exchanging venomous insults. (This is the guy who wrote Succession, after all.)
But the vibe is ruined when they see news reports of rampant chaos and violence around the globe. Even worse, the reports are blaming the violence on the social media platform run by Smith's character Venis. He doesn't believe the news reports, though: "Heads don't explode like that." Carell's character Randall tries to rally his pals to come up with a plan to fix the world. (Hell, they're rich enough to buy several countries outright.) But when Youssef's character Jeff tells Venis that "the world wants your algorithm to stop being racist and s–tty," those fun times on the slopes seem very far away.
In the film, "a group of billionaire friends get together against the backdrop of a rolling international crisis," per the official logline. Armstrong serves as writer and director; the film wrapped up production in Park City, Utah last month.
Armstrong was the creator and showrunner of HBO's Succession, which wrapped up an acclaimed four-season run in 2023. The show won the Emmy for best drama series three times, with Armstrong taking home four Emmys for writing on the show as well. Armstrong also penned episodes of Veep and Black Mirror, and he earned an Oscar nomination for best adapted screenplay as one of the co-writers of the 2009 political satire In the Loop.
