The rumored Mad About You revival is moving closer to becoming the CONFIRMED Mad About You revival.
Multiple sources reveal to TVLine exclusively that Sony, which produced the beloved NBC sitcom, has begun informal talks with leads Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt about bringing the series back for a limited run. Reiser, who also co-created Mad About You with Danny Jacobson, is allegedly leading the charge to resurrect the show. A Sony rep declined to comment for this story.
According to an insider, the new episodes would likely revolve around Paul and Jamie grappling with empty-nest syndrome in the wake of now-17-year-old daughter Mabel’s admission to college.
Earlier this fall, Reiser foreshadowed Mad About You‘s possible return while doing press for his role in the second season of Stranger Things. “If we can find the story to tell, and anybody’s interested, I’d be open to it,” he told People. “To me, it’s interesting when I see my kids are growing and leaving the house. It’s like, ‘Oh.’ It’s like that moment when you get married. It’s like we’re in a new world that we don’t know the rules of.”
Resier admitted he had long been opposed to the idea of a revival, partly because the original series — which wrapped its seven-season run in 1999 — concluded with a flash-forward set 22 years into the future. “Our thinking at the time was, ‘Let’s make sure we never get tempted to come back — let’s tell them what happens,'” he noted.
Although NBC would seem like the logical home for a quasi-eighth season of Mad About You (particularly in the wake of the Peacock’s success with Will & Grace), I’m told the network is not currently involved in the discussions.
Only, and I mean only, if they wipe out that last disaster of a season that broke them up – ala, Dan is no longer dead on Roseanne.
It was a sad, sad day when “Mad About You” mutated into “ Mad AF at You”. It was a great show in its prime, I’d just hate to see a revival of what it turned into at the end.
Oh man, you’re so right!!!! I absolutely HATED the way Jamie spoke to Paul, I actually felt bad for Paul Raiser, even though it was supposedly “acting”.
I hope this is true! I’d love to see that show come back!
I agree. Mad About You was and still is one of my favorite shows. I admit the ending wasn’t enjoyable, but so many other shows suffered the same fate for me–Seinfeld, HIMYM, Roseanne. IMO in it’s prime Mad About was wonderful, and I’d definitely give a “revival”- a chance–and I am not a fan of the whole reboot thing.
No, please no!!!
I wouldn’t watch it and I loved the original show. Too much time has passed.
Will and Grace has been lucky for NBC. But Mad About You? Really? Even if NBC isn’t on board with it NO network should touch it. The show was a shadow of its former self when it ended and I don’t see why 17 years later it will be any better. Stop with re boots please
This is the key issue. MAY had one of the worst final seasons of a series that I remember watching — even before the dreadful “dramedy” of a finale. Will & Grace left us still caring about the characters and wanting to see more of them. Mad About You turned its leads into self-indulgent, whiny fools — the millionaire on a plane episode, anyone — who we wish could have left our screens a year earlier.
Worse than Roseanne?
Roseanne’s lottery season was one of the worst seasons of a formerly great show ever. I have a feeling the reboot will be painful but we’ll see
Perfectly stated, I feel the same way. First 5 years of MAY were great…it just stayed on too long.
Yikes! I have a mental image of various TV think tanks saying look through the archives and bring up any old hit shows where the casts are still alive and we’ll see what we can do. Nostalgia isn’t what it used to be. Get some fresh ideas.
There are literally hundreds of shows right now that have original ideas.Look around.
Precisely why they should stop grave robbing.
And from the worst of the past… MAY? Ugh. never.
While I agree that reboots need to end, unfortunately the masses don’t agree. “Fresh idea” shows like Galavant or Crazy Ex Girlfriend are two that immediately come to mind that got/get low ratings…studios don’t want to take chances, they prefer to go with the proven formula and the sure money.
True dat (sadly).
I don’t know how to feel about this.
While I want to see what Jamie and Paul are up to… what are they going to do about Murray? (Hopefully they have another dog – maybe one of his offspring.)
Here’s a wacky idea: Hire some new blood at NBC and create NEW SHOWS! I know, radical concept, right?!
If Brandon Tartikoff could save NBC in the 1980s with fresh ideas, SURELY there is SOMEONE in the modern era that can do the same thing now.
But constant reboots ain’t it.
I’m just glad NBC can’t touch The Golden Girls, for obvious sad reasons.
Did you even read the article Wendy? NBC are not currently involved.
NBC is “reviving” my most beloved show
“The Office”, sooooooooo effing ridiculous.
NO Steve Carell=NO OFFICE!!!!!
END. OF.
I don’t disagree with you…but that’s the big difference. This is NOT the 80’s with just 3-4 networks. Look Hardly any new sitcoms make a dent on any networks lately unless they have the name recognition. (Top new comedy this year is Young Sheldon). So I don’t blame networks for looking at some past hits…but I agree it’s too too much. Next we’ll be hearing about reboots of Veronica’s Closet and Homeboys from Outer Space.
Again, no network is attached to a Mad About You remake so let’s stop blaming networks for lack of imagination. It’s Sony Studios pitching Mad About You but even if NBC were attached so what? Remakes have been around since the talkies. We are in a golden age of TV right now with more choices than ever before and an incredible amount of acclaimed series so what’s the odd remake or so? Mad About You is a beloved series as the article says. I for one will check it out. Haters can give it a miss. We don’t get enough Paul Reiser in our lives! And for my last point – One Day at a Time on Netflix!
I forget all precisely who I had figured out, but I did the math at one point, and if Golden Girls were done today, one of them could be Katey Segal if something ever happens to Superior Donuts. I feel like Renee Russo was another one. I really don’t recall the other two
Though a Family Ties reboot would be interesting – how would staunch Republican Alex P. Keaton deal the with current disaster that is the Republican Party and its current “leader”?
I’d watch that too!
I’m in for this!!
The premise would most likely be a reverse of original premise. Hippy parents with republican kid. They would have Republican dad with hippy kids.
That show was already cancelled by ABC, it was called Last Man Standing
They had to cancel it so that Tim Allen could be available for the Home Improvement remake
This is beyond pathetic. Have the networks just given up?
Please. Someone. Make. This. Trend. Stop.
This.
Enough!!!!!
I wish ABC would bring back LAST MAN STANDING. The only show that deserves to still be on. They could let it take the place of THE MIDDLE when it ends.
Who in Hades was asking for this? Admittedly I watch the Will & Grace and X-Files revivals, but when is it going to be enough? That being said, I would give my back teeth for Netflix to bring back Veronica Mars. Yeah, yeah I’m a hypocrite.
Time for a new Buffyverse series. although Angel and SPike should not be involved unless it’s explained they turned human at some point as the actors are pushing 50.
Next we’ll hear whispers about rebooting M*A*S*H with Nathan Fillion [Hawkeye], Neil Patrick Harris [BJ] and Kathryn Heigl [Hot Lips]. Stop the madness!
I hope nobody from CBS reads this, THAT’S better casting than they could ever think of!!!
With that cast and maybe Eric Millegan [Zack on Bones] as Radar, I’d watch it.
I would love to see jamie and paul back on tv…im still a huge fan of this series
Well, there’s another reason it can’t come back — Murray the dog can’t possibly still be alive. There’s no show without Murray.
they mentioned in the final episode that murray dies when mabel is 6 and instead of telling her they get a similar looking dog and tell her it’s murray but when she’s 12 she does the math and figures out that they lied to her
Can The Single Guy be far behind? How about Caroline in the City? Veronica’s Closet anyone? The only 90s NBC sitcom that warrant a reboot are Frasier and Friends. The rest were mostly garbage. Mad About You? Come on.
Please no. Hated the original, can’t stand either actor. Just no.
What is going on with all these revivals? Anyways, my pick for a comeback would be the original AKA the mothership, Law & Order with the original cast. It never should have been cancelled.
Stop the bleeping revivals!
Now this I can get behind! It was such an underrated show.
Sure. Why not? It’s the 90s all over again.
YES, please, that show was a hoot! And the chemistry between those two, Oye.
