Here’s something guaranteed to put a much-needed smile on the face of every Legacies fan.
Series creator Julie Plec took to Twitter on Saturday to assure fans of the unceremoniously canceled show — along with fans of Roswell, New Mexico, which was also canceled this week — that they won’t be left on a cliffhanger.
“Mark Pedowitz [and] his team at The CW had the class [and] grace to warn the shows that they might not survive, even if The CW wanted them,” Plec tweeted. “Because of that, the season finales of both shows were carefully crafted to also work as series finales.”
Plec also alluded to several Easter eggs (or possibly more?) for fans who have been invested in the Vampire Diaries Universe since the original series debuted on The CW in 2009.
“I can speak for Legacies in saying that Brett [Matthews] and I and the writing team poured all kinds of love into it. And there are a couple surprises for long-time #TVDU fans that may just blow your mind.”
To its credit, Legacies has consistently found fun ways to honor its predecessors. In addition to bringing back many familiar faces from The Vampire Diaries and The Originals (click here for a complete breakdown of all the crossovers), it has also offered much-appreciated updates on beloved characters like Dr. Elena Salvatore, M.D.
New episodes of Legacies resume on Thursday, June 2 (9/8c), with the season-turned-series finale set to air on June 16. What are your hopes for the final episodes? Drop ’em in a comment below.
That “might not survive, even if The CW wanted them” is an interesting phrase.
So glad there will be some closure for Roswell, NM, I had been dreading watching the upcoming final series, thinking it would end on a cliffhanger as usual.
Can they please pitch the series to Hulu/Netflix or some other network? Lol.
What to do without a Mikelson on TV any more?
Good to know for Roswell.
This Roswell lasted longer than the original and won’t end on a cliffhanger. So, even if they didn’t do everything they wanted it is still sounds like a marked improvement on how its predecessor ended.
Lasted longer? Hmm… The original Roswell had 65 episodes. This Roswell will have 52 episodes by the end.
This new Roswell won’t end on a cliffhanger, but OG Roswell is still the biggest (and better, imo) show.
So, Pedowitz told them about it and yet… the LoT showrunner ended the season with a cliffhanger? Thats why some fans are saying, I hope its not like when sara was abducted by aliens.
They might not have gotten the heads up. Or because Flash was given another season, the message might’ve been different for them.
The showrunner admitted on twitter they had in fact been given a heads up and they still choose to end on a cliffhanger so thats kinda on them.
Sometimes the unplanned finales are the best imo
NO CLIFFHANGERS I REPEAT NO CLIFFHANGERS
this is good news
i mean if they could pull off a surprise klaus cameo and somehow convince joseph to return that would be maybe the best surprise ive seen on tv at least in a long time
if not ill settle for like kai or malivore showing up again, something along those lines
If you could have all the Mickelson come back for the Last episodes the help there family. ALWAYS AND FOREVER
i would definetely like elijah if they could also convince daniel to return cause i think he deserves forgiveness from hope who had this utter contempt for him despite the fact he did nothing wrong, he didnt kill hayley or let her be killed
Elijah is dead.
im referring to his ghost
Elijah and Klaus died at the same time. But, I guess a flashback or a therapy box session might be a good use of either of them coming back for a final visit.
no, ive got to see them for real, none of that therapy box crap
that device ruined legacies for me
That would be so awesome👍❤️
Better yet it would be beyond awesome if they brought all characters back from Vampire diaries, Legacies and Originals and make a spin off like in another dimension or have the show have Hope Mickelson wake up in the storyline as she had went into a dream state and she comes back out of it and all the originals main characters were there including using some of the main characters from Vampire Diaries. For fans of the three shows this would be an awesome “dream come true”, that would make a good name for the first episode . Or “ when a dream Comes True” It is really sad to take not just on show away from longtime dedicated fans but all three ?
Good job Julie!
Eventhough it would be easy to believe to be a sure renewal they thought of the fans first.
Hoping that the other shows like Dynasty (and especially In The Dark) took advantage of this as well.
Dynasty still has 6 episodes left to shoot according to Liz, so I think is safe to assume that they will tie any loose ends – or not, Dynasty is a wild ride lol
I believe I read somewhere that In The Dark was ending after four season anyway. So they should have a satisfying ending.
It’s a relief that they were given some warning. All I was really hoping to avoid was a cliffhanger.
I feel better now. I was bummed thinking about Roswell ending with a cliffhanger, I’ll miss Magnum, but at least we got a decent ending. Good for the CW execs.
I am a huge huge huge Vampire Diaries fan (I’m literally in the middle of yet another rewatch. Damon just got bit by Tyler. Good stuff.) and this article put literal tears in my eyes. Now I admit that I was never really able to get into The Originals, so I’m biased but I definitely, personally think that Caroline would be the best choice for a cameo for the Legacies finale. They’ve talked about her on Legacies since the beginning, and with Lizzie’s transition, her absence is just glaring. Caroline is a vampire herself. (Although, admittedly, I haven’t watched the latest episode of Legacies yet so for all I know Lizzie wound up cured somehow). I mean there are others I would RATHER see. Like Elena and Damon or Bonnie but I think Caroline is the best of the LIKELY contenders. If they had like ample time to plan and knew for certain this was going to be the last season, I really think they should have worked to get Nina Dobrev, since this whole franchise started with her. But I don’t know, there just doesn’t seem like there would have been time for something like that. But I feel like, in the back of their minds, they always assumed they would bring on Caroline. Either way, I am so glad to read this!
Caroline being MIA has been a problem for me during the whole show. I had to forget about connections to Vampire Diaries while watching. The biggest issue for me was Damon and Elena living in town and not being involved in anything. But, Caroline’s absence has been more glaringly obvious lately. I really hope there’s some good closure for Legacies though. I don’t always watch when new episodes come out. I’ll wait until there are a few and then watch. I have the latest one still to watch. But, I do enjoy it when I tune in.
I finally found a good place to go and for what it’s worth I’ll never forget all the anger. tears , joy ,laughter and pain I felt and experiences from vampire dairies originals and legacies
It doesn’t matter why it was canceled it hurts
There should br a way to bring back the originals
Even as a child vampires we knew never really died they always comeback
What makes this interesting is that since everyone got a heads up about the cancelation spree then they had time to shop all these shows to other networks and streaming services, so I assume that soon enough we’ll have news if anyone of the victims of the cw bloodbath will live somewhere else.
Arthur you should go to Hollywood Reporter and read the story where the first line of the title is called “Mad About The CW Cancellations?” Because it explains why this was done. Mostly to cut costs and because a lot of the shows were part of the Netflix Deal so they aren’t allowed to go elsewhere. So only All American, The Flash, and Riverdale are left from the Netflix deal. All the other shows and new shows can stream on The CW app as well as all the acquisitions they are picking up so it makes selling the network more attractive since they can make money off the web streams now.. Everyone wants to load up their streaming sites now so selling internally is no longer desired which is where they made a lot of their money as well as the Netflix deal which ended in 2019 also due to the streaming competition so with both main sources of income to make up for the low ratings only the profitable shows were kept. I am not sure those 2 older shows will last another Season either. If they sell off the network and move the fee shows I like to HBOMAX I’d be thrilled. As far as a real network goes those days are over. Less scripted and low budget will take over.
Oh wow, I knew some of the shows went by with the Netflix money, like Riverdale and Dynasty, so I really thought they could have been snatched by Netflix themselves, I mean they are “Netflix Originals” in the international market. On the other hand HBO Max seems like the most obvious place to find these shows in the future at least in the US, but Warner has some really weird licensing deals that you never know when their own shows will be available there.
@Arthir. I’m sure once the costs abs low ratings verses return on investment got too low it just wasn’t worth it plus 3 to 5 is the longest most series run on Netflix so I wouldn’t have been surprised with Netflix also saying based on viewership numbers what they wanted to stick around a little longer. I can’t see a world normally where 2 spin-offs get picked up other than to get new cheap shows and still have name-recognition. If they do manage to sell it and the new owners don’t like the shoes then no big deal if they cancel after a season. With streaming rights finally getting sorted out now that some of the dust is settling it will be interesting to see if that means less shows jumping around. I’m mostly curious to see if more than 5 seasons for new shows remains for just a few shows only
As a fan of TVD universe, this makes me extremely happy. I haven’t yet finished The Originals and obviously haven’t started Legacies yet, but I look forward to pushing three with the former now. I’m also very happy to hear that Roswell, New Mexico will be ending on a conclusive note as well.
It would be really nice if they actually used strategies against Ken. Like protection spells. Also, the hallow was once a person. Would be legit to see the hollow restored and combined with Hope. Then idk why hope doesn’t move the fight To new Orleans.
On a final note I see no reason the Michaelsons wouldn’t be present. “Moar people”
i just really hope it’s not a cliffhanger. if it is, i hope netflix saves it.
I want to see a final super bad scene with Bonnie…. I think the Gemini twins may have to merge and Lizzie wins so she would become a stronger heretic. Ken is invincible to magic, so witches are mostly out of the picture. Hope needs muscle. Original vampires and Marcel. Aurora will most likely betray Ken, and help to defeat him. And then we still forget about the remaining 3 sleeping gods. We don’t even get to see them?
I AM SO CONFUSED HOW I WANT THIS TO END!!!!!!! MAKE IT A NETFLIX SERIES ALREADY!!!!!!!
Now that Lizzie died there should be no more merge issues so it would be nice to see Josie and Caroline come back.
I just really hope the fans are satisfied with the season-turned-series finale. The fans of the TVDU deserve to have a satisfying ending to this trilogy.
well, im hoping for a good ending and for one of mind blowing surprises that Jed somehow got Ben pregnant.
I love anything to do with vampire Diaries. Julie plec is the best her shows could play for ever. Thank so much!!
Damn you CW! Oh the blood and gore from axing so many of my favorites! At least Legacies will end while it was still so good! Please let Hope be happy in the end.
Klaus and Elijah making the finale would be amazing!
