HBO Delaying Last Week Tonight Clips On YouTube
You'll no longer be able to catch up on Last Week Tonight on Monday mornings. Clips from Sunday night shows are now being delayed until Thursday, says its host John Oliver.
"I know I usually share a link to our main story here on Mondays, but HBO has decided they're going to wait until Thursday to post them to YouTube from now on," Oliver posted on X Monday. "I hope they change their mind, but until then, you can see our piece about the Supreme Court on HBO, on MAX and on YouTube in a few days."
The premium cabler confirmed its change in strategy, and said the move is an effort to get more viewers to watch the show on its streaming platform, Max.
"When Last Week Tonight with John Oliver premiered on HBO, the convenience of watching on Max did not exist, so YouTube allowed flexible viewing for the main story as well as promotional exposure," an HBO spokesperson tells TVLine. "We are now delaying that availability and hope those fans choose to watch the entire show on Max."
As Oliver mentioned on social media, the main story in Sunday's Season 11 premiere revolved around the Supreme Court, in which the host offered a million dollars a year and a $2.4 million motorcoach to Clarence Thomas in exchange for him stepping down as a SCOTUS justice.
"If you watch our show, you know jokes aren't really our thing," Oliver said in Sunday's episode. "This is real. A million dollars a year until you or I die."
The host made it clear that he discussed the offer with legal experts who assured him he wasn't breaking any laws. He also confirmed that "HBO is not putting up the money for this. I am personally on the hook. You can make me really regret this. I could be doing standup tours to pay for your retirement for years.
"This offer is not forever," Oliver continued. "You have exactly 30 days from midnight tonight to make your resignation effective."
