Soap Legend Jed Allan, Santa Barbara‘s C.C. Capwell, Dead at 84
Soap vet Jed Allan, best known for his roles on NBC’s Days of Our Lives and Santa Barbara, died on Saturday. He was 84.
In a Facebook post, Allan’s son, Rick Brown, said the suds vet “died peacefully and was surrounded by his family.”
In the 60s, Allan cut his teeth on the CBS soaps Love of Life and The Secret Storm, before joining Days of Our Lives in 1971 as Don Craig, a character he played for 14 years. In 1986 he landed what would be his most memorable role, that of patriarch C.C. Capwell on the then-fledgling Santa Barbara. He remained with the Emmy winning soap until its final episode in 1993, after which he segued to primetime via a recurring role as Rush Sanders, the father of Ian Ziering’s Steve, on Beverly Hills, 90210.
In 2004, he temporarily took over the role of General Hospital‘s Edward Quartermaine.
A Martinez, who played Allan’s Santa Barbara son-in-law Cruz Castillo, remembered him as “the finest actor… and an even better man,” adding, “He was about family. Protecting his own, and building it in the casts he graced. It was magic to work with him –– his rock solid professionalism giving way to inspired energy once the cameras rolled.”
May he RIP. I thoroughly enjoyed watching him on DOOL and Santa Barbara.
Me too, he’s was such an incredible force of nature in any role he played. I loved him on DOOL, SB and 90210. RIP.

I’m still not over the cancellation of Santa Barbara, and Jed Allen was a formidable and often very funny patriarch of the Capwell family (especially funny whenever Robin Mattson’s Gina was around). I think it’s time to bust out some VHS tapes this weekend.

I also enjoyed his brief time as Edward Quartermaine on General Hospital. It was one of the delightful absurdities of soapworld that the actor was only two years old than Stuart Damon, who played his son, Alan.

Four actors played C.C. and Jed was absolutely the best. Miss that show – would love for someone to rebroadcast or stream it online. Such great memories from it … we even named our new rescue puppy CC.

Very sad. Enjoyed him at the end of his time on Days, as he was fazed out and Wayne Northrup’s Roman came on. Then, loved him as CC Capwell on Santa Barbara. RIP
He will always and forever be Don Craig to me. RIP Mr Allen.
I met Jed Allan many years ago at El Pedregal in north Scottsdale, AZ. He was there with friends, as was I, and was so friendly and gracious. I was a longtime Days fan so was thrilled to recognize him. I’m saddened to hear of his death.

Never watched that particular soap back in the day, but I recognize his face. Handsome man. Condolences to his family, friends, & fans.

He was the 4th. The first,Lloyd Bochner, had a heart attack, and had to be replaced before the show debuted. And Jed, was, of course, the very best. He became a dear friend, one of those rare instant connections, and I will miss him. Like sands through the hourglass….
He was really wonderful on Santa Barbara, the best soap ever. All these years later, I still remember the scenes of C.C., alone in a room, watching a slide show full of pictures of his daughter Eden (Marcy Walker) when everyone thought she had died. It was a soap. Of course she wasn’t dead. But he really sold the character’s grief without saying a word. A class act in every role he played.
I can close my eyes & hear his voice. He was a favorite of mine. Sorry to hear he is gone but not forgotten. RIP
I loved him – and loved to hate him – as C.C. I recall one of his sons would play the character in flashbacks during C.C.’s younger years. He seemed well regarded by everyone he worked with, a sign of a truly good man. May he RIP and be reunited with his beloved wife.
I still think of “Santa Barbara” nearly every day. I often think of favorite storylines or scenes. I watch clips from episodes on YouTube. I always include the theme song when I burn a new TV theme compilation CD. I loved that show. So…this news is heartbreaking.
Nothing against the first three C.C.’s (four if you count Lloyd Bochner, who never aired), but when C.C. came out of that coma played by Jed Allan, there was no doubt that all of the pieces had finally fallen into place for “Santa Barbara.” Immediately, C.C.’s relationship with every other character — Mason, Gina, Sophia, Eden — took on new depth and it all made sense. I might be going out on a limb here, but finding the right C.C. is what kept this show going for the rest of its run. As great as the entire cast was, Jed Allan’s contribution to “Santa Barbara” is immeasurable.
It’s strange that I’m watching him on HeeHaw as a guest so I googled his current status only to find out he passed yesterday. Sad.

I loved him on Days of Our Lives. I was very sorry when they wrote him out & especially at the way they did it. He went to the mailbox & never came back. I wish they had at least given him a proper send-off. May he Rest in Peace.
