James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water will make a doubly-large splash when it begins streaming next month.
Coming off of a historic, months-long theatrical run during which it became the third highest-grossing film of all time worldwide (by amassing nearly $2.32 billion at the box office) and earned four Academy Award nominations (including for Best Picture), the lonnnng-in-the-making Avatar sequel is set to begin streaming Wednesday, June 7 — on Disney+ as well as on what will by then be known simply as Max.
Update: Both Disney+ and Max subscribers will also have access to bonus content featuring filmmakers, cast and crew.
Set more than a decade after the events of the first film (which came out in December 2009), Avatar: The Way of Water tells the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), “the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure” — all against the backdrop of the breathtaking seascapes of Pandora, where audiences are introduced to new Na’vi cultures and a range of exotic sea creatures.
Produced by Cameron and his longtime partner Jon Landau, the blockbuster stars Sam Worthington (as Jake), Zoe Saldaña (as Neytiri), Sigourney Weaver (as Kiri), Stephen Lang (as Miles Quaritch), Cliff Curtis (Tonowari) and Kate Winslet (Ronal), plus newcomers Britain Dalton, Jamie Flatters, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, Bailey Bass and Jack Champion.
Are you ready to dive into The Way of Water at home? Is your telly up to the task? My 20-inch Sylvania is stoked!
I’m wondering what’s taking so long for it to come to 4K disc…
The deal FOX films had with HBO prior to the Disney acquisition and stuff with Max expired in 2022, so this late-2022 film is probably the last one to release to both services unless I’m forgetting about another film yet to release (movies like Ron’s Gone Wrong and Free Guy had also premiered on both). So the future Avatar movies will probably just release to Disney+ (after their theater and VOD runs).
Yes and that’s why it isn’t a story and also almost will certainly premire on hbo linear probably the same week it hits max like other 20th century fox films
II saw it in the theater and I bought it the day it was released for purchase so I’ve seen it both ways. I just want to say, it’s almost as good on tv, so don’t hesitate to watch it there! Sign up for a free trial if you don’t subscribe to one of those platforms. It’s worth it, in spite of the whiners who think the story is weak. Plus, there are three more, so one must keep up!!
The “whiners” are right – the story is weak. It’s all about family until it’s suddenly about Whale brains allowing you to live forever while Zoe Saldana screams in the background
Yay!! Now my mom could watch Avatar Way of Water on Disney+ or Max 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
At least D+ will show it in Dolby Vision with an Atmos soundtrack as part of its standard (not free) plan. I am guessing since this will be after the transition to Max, you will have to be in the top pay tier to get the DV/Atmos version.
