More than five-and-a-half years after airing its sophomore finale, the BAFTA Award-winning UK drama Happy Valley has been renewed for a third and final season — which will have a new Stateside home.
It was announced on Tuesday that the crime drama, created by Sally Wainwright and starring BATFA Award winner Sarah Lancashire as police sergeant Catherine Carowood, will wrap its run with six new episodes, to be filmed in early 2022. Also back for the farwell run will be James Norton and Siobhan Finneran as, respectively, murder/sex offender Tommy Lee Royce and Catherine’s sister Clare, THR reports.
And whereas the first two seasons of the BBC drama enjoyed Stateside popularity via Netflix, Season 3 will air on AMC+.
In Season 3, the BBC reports, Catherine discovers the remains of a gangland murder victim in a drained reservoir, sparking a chain of events that again unwittingly leads her straight back to Royce.
“When Happy Valley first launched on the BBC in 2014, it changed the landscape of crime drama completely,” BBC drama chief Piers Wenger said in a statement. “Sally has crafted a magnificent conclusion that is sure to make this third and final series one of television’s most highly anticipated and unmissable moments.”
Stoked. One of the most raw shows I’ve ever seen. Anything Wainwright does is gold. Oh and I guess we should expect a season 2 renewal of Mare of Eastown to air in 2023 now that it has more material to copy. (Kidding!)
Yaaaaaas!!!
.
I honestly do not know where Sally Wainwright finds the time.
Holy cow, really??This is amazing news! One of the best of a really excellent bunch of Brit procedural dramas.
It’s about time!
Terrific – I really didn’t think this would ever come to be. Sally Wainwright writes all of her shows, it’s not like she has a writing room and they’re all excellent. She also wrote Gentleman Jack, Last Tango in Halifax to name a few. I just wonder where it will air in Canada.
Since Netflix released the trailer for Unforgettable today starring Sandra Bullock, it is notable that movie is based on a 2009 Wainwright series, Unforgiven.
The Unforgivable is the correct name of the Netflix film. So I made things even more confusing lol.
The original “Unforgiven” also starred Wainwright stalwarts Suranne Jones (Gentleman Jack) and Siobhan Finneran (Happy Valley).
You can pretty much bank on anything Suranne Jones is in these days, too. She just did a drama about investigating a murder on one of Britain’s nuclear deterrent submarines called Vigil and it was fantastic. Hope it comes to this side of the pond soon.
So do I. She is great in Gentlemen Jack, Doctor Foster and Scott & Bailey.
I didn’t realize they had taken Happy Valley off Netflix so I just bought the first 2 seasons on iTunes. I’m sure as hell not going to subscribe to AMC+ just for this and now I can watch it as often as I want.😀
Yeah!!! I recently remembered this show and was so sad to see its no longer streaming on Netflix. I hope AMC+ streams the entire show.
Seasons 1 and 2 are currently available on AMC+.
The main character’s
last name is Cawood not Carowood
