NBC has disbanded its Council of Dads, cancelling the rookie drama after one season.
J. August Richards, who plays Council member Oliver Post, broke the news on Thursday night as the series’ penultimate episode began playing on the East Coast. TVLine has since confirmed through sources that the unconventional-family drama will not be returning for Season 2. [pmc_inline_gallery]
“That’s a series wrap on @nbcCouncilOfDads (aka the show has been cancelled),” Richards wrote on Instagram. “I want to thank [executive producers Joan Rater and Tony Phelan] for the willingness to give voice and representation to #gayfamilies, #blacklgbt, #qpoc and the worldwide #lgbtq community by telling the story of Oliver, Peter and Tess Post-Richards.
“I also want to thank YOU! Yes, YOU!” he said to fans. “I took a big risk and you let me know you have my back… And, in truth, what more could a person ask for??? ☺️☺️☺️ Love y’all! Seriously.”
Through its June 18 episode, Council of Dads averaged a 0.4 demo rating and 2.8 million total viewers (in Live+Same Day numbers). Out of the 14 dramas that NBC has aired this TV season, it thus ranks next-to-last in the demo (only besting lead-out Blindspot’s farewell run) and No. 11 in total audience.
Following a father of five who in the wake of a health scare calls on a few of his most trusted friends to step in as “back-up dads” in the event of his death, Council featured a cast that also included Taken‘s Clive Standen, Prison Break‘s Sarah Wayne Callies and ER alum Tom Everett Scott.
What about Katy Keene? It’s almost July. Lol
I want to know about Katy Keene as well
The CW wants to see if it does well on HBO Max before they make the decision.
Yeah, I knew that, but HBO Max has been out for a whole month now… Are they hoping people will magically tune in?
I think they want to see how much profit they can get from Katy Keene by next month and if that doesn’t work, then cancellation is possible.
No. Say it ain’t so. I love council of dads. Real unhappy
This is such a great show with a wonderful story line…deals with real life issues. I cried watching every episode. I would even rewatch the episodes (just like The Village…another good show that was canceled), Give it a chance.
really bummed about this. I was just thinking how this show is almost as good as This is Us.
Love Council. Sorry no season 2!
I so agree with you! I love this show
So sad the Council of Dads is canceled. My wife and I have tuned in every week to see how this family navigates through the struggles that alot of families have to work through, i.e. addictions, adoptions, LGBTQ awareness, young love, and losses of loved ones. We have come to love the roles of Robin, Luly, Charlotte, Theo, JJ, Larry, etc. Please reconsider your decision to cancel CoD so soon.
I agree. It could have been a decent wrap up ending if they had not left Larry sitting with a drink at the end. It seemed like a show that was perfect for issues going on now.
Amen to Karen’s comment. Seems that most really different and good shows get cancelled – especially on NBC. They will probably replace it with another medical, or police show – there aren’t enough of those on TV – NOT!
It was amazing. I loved the chemistry with all the characters
Me too. I think Council is one of the best new shows.
Agreed!
Me too! Cry almost every episode
Me too! I think if it comes on directly after This is Us it would catch on…can we fight to keep it on?
My thoughts exactly. Have they said why they are cancelling it?
Noooooooo! This just ticks me off.
Guess if I love a show it’s the kiss of death for them
I loved council of dads and I loved Tommy!!!
I hate all the reality shows and they go on forever!!! Go figure!!
Guess it’s on to Netflix!!!
I agree maybe another network will pick it up
Ooooh, yes please!!
Considering its low ratings, it would be silly for another network to pick it up
Another network has different viewers. Generally, NBC doesn’t seem to have this kind of shows.
I have often thought the same thing about new shows as Steph & Judith.
This was real and good.
CBS, Fox, heck Paramount should pick it up!
Kevin Costner – we love Yellowstone, keep this show going on Paramount!
I feel the same way I liked both Tommy and Council
Right!?!? I feel the same way with the kiss of death when I love a show !!!
Right. I 100 percent agree with you. I b b love this show and hate that its been cancelled. I was looking forward to next season after the last episode but I guess there wont be one. Sad face. This show made me smile and during these crazy times being able to sit down and and enjoy an episode will be missed. Lol. I know ots just a show but I thought it was a great one.
This sucks. Had a lot of potential.
I am thinking the same thing . All the good shows are cancel.
Yes, triple sucks!
Noooo.
Once again NBC cancels a good thoughtful show. If they want to know why they are at the bottom its because the cancel all the best shows. It is such a shame. Good acting, unique storyline. Instead you are going for unscripted crap. Good choice NBC. Self defeating decisions.
It had terrible ratings. Why would they keep it? The quality of a show is irrelevant
AMEN to that Patricia!
So sad… really a great show!!!
For the past three years the “next This Is Us” so to speak (Rise, The Village, and now Council of Dads) have all been cancelled. I think it’s safe to say that audiences are not interested in a “slice of life show” on NBC that isn’t This Is Us
We stopped watching This Is Us after the first two seasons. We enjoyed this one much more, you didn’t need a score card. .
Uhh..Million Little Things is still doing well thank you very much.
Except that’s on ABC
I thought this tv series Council of Dad is better than the tv series This is Us. My husband doesn’t watch tv show. But he like Council of Dad , we
Are both disappointed that it cancel. Hope people write to the station how good this tv show is.
Sorry but that the way I feel..
I’m am so disappointed that NBC canceled Council of Dads. I have been a faithful follower of This Is Us, but I think Coucil of Dads is even better. It is the best drama to come along in years. It has excellent writers and actors. It is a refreshing story, which touches on reality.
I was just looking forward to seeing more of Council of Dads when I saw this news. So what happens now, NBC? More reality shows, game shows, and other low-rate entertainment? Any show worth it’s salt can’t thrive on network TV anymore. No wonder everyone is paying more attention to the streaming services now. Network TV fails it’s intelligent viewership again.
Hey don’t knock game shows. When they are done well (ABC) they are great
I cannot believe Council of Dads is canceled! This is why I refuse to watch any new shows! It is a nice show and now it will left inconclusive. Terrible. I hope another channel picks it up. Stop airing stupid reality shows and leave shows like this one on the air!!!
Well, when people refuse to watch new shows…that’s sort of the problem. Maybe if more people gave new shows a try, even though they might get canceled, then there would be more viewers and those same shows might not get canceled.
I love the show haven’t missed a episode please don’t cancel the show it’s a great show
I watched it but a lot of people didn’t.The show had no real competition and the ratings were still bad. I suppose that they could have just made it a summer show
Sickened by NBCs decision! It seems like everything worth them is all about TIS. I now only watch 4 shows on NBC: the Blacklist and One Chicago Wednesday and will probably keep it that way from now on because I’m so sick of falling in love with an awesome show (“The Village,” anyone?) and having NBC cancel it on us fans. Such a shi-crapp-y decision, NBC!!
I’m devastated. I didn’t find out about the show until about 4 weeks ago and I binge watched and have told friends and family about it and they’re all hooked to. Please someone, Netflix, HBO, someone take on this absolutely fabulous show
I stayed with it t lost ones as I felt the whole idea was weird. The mom should grow up and raise her kids without putting those men out. Just silly to me.
I watched the first episode and it was boring. If I want to see friends help raise kids who lost their father, I’ll watch A Million Little Things.
Patty you clearly missed the connection of the Dad being all the other Dads sponsors in AA. They were able to give his kids things he couldn’t anymore. Hope you know true friendship in your life someday.
Jeepers…. I love this show!
This is so upsetting! They don’t give shows an opportunity to grow. This was a good Spring/Summer show. I hope someone else picks them up.
Well, i did watch
That’s crazy I love this show ?? What do they base this on !!!
According to the article it had low ratings. So, not enough people were watching.
Did the ratings people ask any of the MANY people on here that are really upset by the cancellation and the OPEN ending?
Unfortunately the average TV viewer now prefers mindless crappy entertainment!
We really love this show, please bring it back.
I cannot believe that NBC has cancelled yet another feel good family drama! It wasn’t so long ago that I was upset over the cancellation of The Village.
Hopefully another network will pick up this wonderful show.
No! I love this show!
Really bummed to hear this news. I love this show. Any chance it will get picked up somewhere else?
Very disappointing!
Cool. You had a stupid name and I won’t miss your ads.
One of the best shows on NBC. Very disappointed.
I am so disappointed they are cancelling such a wonderful family show. Please reconsider or perhaps another network can pickup this fantastic show.
So sorry to see Council of Dads cancelled, it was the only NBC show we watched this spring. Hope some network oicks it up. We never watch the silly sitcoms and the rediculous game shows. Guess i will coninue with Netflix and Amazon
