The mystery of when all eight seasons of Castle can be streamed has been solved.[pmc_inline_gallery]
TVLine can exclusively report that the romantic dramedy, which originally aired on ABC from March 2009 to May 2016, will make its U.S. subscription streaming premiere on Hulu, on Wednesday, Oct. 6.
“Hulu is thrilled to be bringing Castle to the service for the beloved series’ U.S. streaming premiere,” Brian Henderson, Hulu SVP of SVOD Content Programming & Partnerships, said in a statement. “It’s a great addition to our vast TV library and we can’t wait for subscribers to relive all eight seasons… or discover the series for the first time.”
Created by Andrew W. Marlowe, Castle starred Firefly‘s Nathan Fillion as the titular Richard Castle, a mystery novelist who in the pilot was recruited by the NYPD to help solve a murder committed in a way identical to one of his fictional characters. Upon meeting Detective Kate Beckett (played by Stana Katic) and determined to use her as a muse for the hero of his next novel series, Nikki Heat, Castle pulls strings with his friend the mayor to “shadow” Kate.
The series’ cast over the years also included Jon Huertas and Seamus Dever as detectives Javi Esposito and Kevin Ryan; Susan Sullivan and Molly Quinn as Castle’s mother, Martha, and daughter, Alexis; Tamala Jones as M.E. Dr. Lanie Parish; Ruben Santiago-Hudson and then Penny Johnson Jerald as 12th precinct captains Roy Montgomery and Victoria Gates; and Toks Olagundoye as MI6 operative-turned-security specialist Hayley Shipton.
Castle during its run collected five People’s Choice Awards, including for Favorite TV Crime Drama and for both Fillion and Katic (as Favorite Crime Drama TV Actor/Actress).
Speaking with TVLine in the Comic-Con video below, shortly after Castle‘s run ended, Fillion said, “We had eight years of a phenomenal television show with amazing people that I love so very very much. I’ll miss them dearly, and I’ll miss the characters they play.”
Showrunners Alexi Hawley and Terence Paul Winter, upon the series’ end, remarked, “Eight seasons. A hundred and seventy three episodes…. None of it would have been possible without you — our loyal and passionate fans. You are the reason this show survived and thrived. Without you carving out ‘Castle Mondays’ every week, we would never have been able to make the show we love for as long as we did.”
Have you been champing at the bit for a Castle rewatch? Or waiting to binge the series for the fist time?
Why wasn’t it streaming before?
They had to give people time to get over how badly they screwed the fans over at the end.
very true
About time!
How is this an “exclusive” when I’ve seen a few sites over the last week show what was coming to Hulu next month and they all had Castle listed on it?
That’s TVLine for you, lol
I’d rather they just stream the first seven years and call it good?
I totally support that. Season 7 finale was the right end for the show.
8th season was a bad dream and should be removed – kind of the like the original Star Wars Holiday Special –
We need that MIB “memory eraser” thingy for S8.
We need the “memory eraser” thingy to erase reading about all the behind the scenes drama. The behind the scenes drama is partly what ruined season 8 & imo the whole series. Like the bubble burst that Nathan & Stana don’t get along & don’t have good chemistry like Castle & Beckett do. Well, maybe they did at the beginning of the series. But, something changed towards the end & ruined it.
We know what — two words, Lord Nathan aka Too-Big-for-Hs-Britches
Just do what I did and don’t watch Season 8. If I didn’t see it, then it didn’t happen. And if you happen to be one of those who liked Season 8 (I don’t see how, but different people have different tastes), then Season 8 is available for you.
This is most excited I’ve been for a procedural show to hit streaming in a long time, and I never even bothered with the last two seasons!
Is it possible to enjoy the show knowing what happened? I would find it impossible to forget all of that.
Right. It just changed it for me
I thought it was just me. Yes, what happened makes me not interested in watching the show again
It’s sad having to agree. I love Castle, but I was never able to watch it again :(
In some ways, yes. I always thought it was funny how the thought they were going to completely change the show. It’s like, I know the title of the show is “Castle”, but the show itself is more about Beckett’s story seen from Castle’s POV. That’s the whole reason he follows her. I don’t know. I guess egos get in the way.
That’s exactly right. Beckett was the key to the entire show and Stana played her perfectly. It’s the muse that inspires the author/artist and Beckett inspired Castle. She was the focus, the driving force of his writing and his detective work. Essentially, he was along for the ride that she drove. That fictional reality, which was never quite acknowledged in articles and SM, upset the apple cart known as the male ego when it became too evident.
It’s possible as long as you know when to stop. And decide that nothing happened after you stopped. For me, I stopped after the Season 7 finale. Other people may have different stopping points, or not have needed one at all.
Yes, it’s possible.
You should have included Stana Katic in your accolades about PCAs. And unlike some of the other comments, I think season 8 has several redeeming qualities.
The main one (IMO) being that it was bad enough to get the show cancelled before we had to endure an S9 without Beckett.
Season 8 did not cause the cancelation. The showrunners were going ahead with S9 without Beckett. Fan blowback convinced them that was a non-starter. When it looked like the network would cancel the show, that “7 years later” scene was filmed and ended up being used after the network finally axed it.
Oh lord have mercy. Showrunners rarely make decisions on if shows keep going. Networks do. ABC Studios owns Castle, they negotiated the deals. The network didn’t want a show without Stana AND Nathan. So they canceled it.
Showrunners were doing their job — running the show. And they filmed the finale season before they wrapped season eight.
final scene, not finale season.
Fillion, Huerta, and Dever, IIRC, were committed to S9 before the show was canceled. The showrunners had the season finale with the penultimate scene of Castle and Beckett shot. The final scene, according to showrunner interviews, was filmed in the event ABC canceled S9, which they did. So, S8 was wrapped with that contingency scene, which wrapped the series.
Sorry, those wins did not show up on the list I had. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1219024/awards/?ref_=tt_awd
Added!
Given Katic’s importance to the show, she should be one of your tags. “TAGS: CASTLE, HULU, NATHAN FILLION” really short changes her impact and value.
Matt, I still remember when you changed your Twitter header photo in support after Stana got fired from Castle.
i couldn’t wait so i bought it on a while back
Awesome 👏 👏👏
so i did’nt watch it on amazon?
must of been a dream two years ago.
in fact i must still be dreaming – it is on my list and marked as watched – spooky!
unless you mean just in the US? in which case, i am not dreaming and that’s my one of my boys screaming at his brother!
Save time and skip S8. S1, S4, S5, and S6 were the best.
When Rick was lost at sea, his little rowboat must’ve inadvertently jumped a shark
it’s on disney+? or is that just europe?
Just in Europe, I believe.
Castle has been on both Disney+ and Amazon Prime in Canada for quite a while.
after the ending of season 6 with that cliffhanger
the they didin’t live it to it
season 7 had a lot of great episodes but season 8 and that ending were terrible
a disrepect to a great series
ive been watching it on Vudu for a while. It was recently put into a bundle for purchase. i think its either 60 or 80 USD.
So excited! I loved this show when it was on. Can’t believe it took this long for a service to pick it up!
I bought the DVDs including the debatable final season, though I rarely rewatch it anymore, since there are other new shows that I’m into now.
May rewatch it again, it was good. I’ll probably skip the last season.
I use to love this show when it aired. Absolutely loved. And best thing about the show for me was Castle and Beckett frenemies turned lovers relationship. But during last season, all the behind the scenes drama between the two leads left a very bad taste of the show for me. Since its end I have not gone back to watch any scenes of this show on YouTube. Reading this article made me realize that I want to rewatch it but also can’t keep the BTS Hate out of my mind. I am that kind of person who cannot separate story from real life drama. So it has automatically ruined the show for me. I mean I wasn’t expecting them to be bffs in real life but little respect of each other would have been enough. There was so much anger and resentment between them.
I can watch season 8 even though it made me ugly cry. I respect the work the actors & crew put in while hating the writers’ attempt at reinventing the show. Also… any (unproven) “bts drama” isn’t displayed in the show; everyone from Castle speaks civilly in public and in responsible media, and that’s good enough for me.
Totally agree. Regarding the bts drama, my take is that Katic wanted to move on and Fillion, et al., didn’t. Once they were under contract the professionals got on with it (the disagreements were set aside). Whatever the riffs in the beginning they apparently started the rumor mill; the internet being the uncontrolled ogre that it is.
‘Bout time!
Castle for me is like HIMYM, the whole show was ruined by the end and I’ve never rewatched an episode since it ended.
For HIMYM it was just the finale, but for Castle it was a slow moving car crash from about season 6. The kicker being the final disaster ending (/off screen reports and attempts for season 9).
Castle was the best show on TV I’ve never watched anything since as good the chemistry of the two main characters was off the chart so happy it’s coming back somewhere
Yay!! The first 5 seasons in particular were excellent.
After 5.21 you could see a change.
It’s about time!!
FYI, Castle reruns premiere on Lifetime Oct 6.
Lifetime is a non-starter for me. Too much needless editing.
They’ve been censoring reruns of Rizzoli & Isles, Major Crimes, etc for quite some time now.
