Animal Control isn’t done horsing around. Fox has renewed the Joel McHale-led comedy for Season 2, TVLine has learned.
Season to date, Animal Control is averaging 2.25 million total viewers and a 0.4 demo rating (with Live+7 playback), Out of the eight comedies that Fox has aired this TV season, it ranks No. 2 in audience (right behind The Simpsons) and ties for No. 4 in the demo.
“We are thrilled our viewers have responded to Animal Control as much as we did,” Fox Entertainment president Michael Thorn said in a statement Wednesday. “The incredibly talented ensemble cast, led by Joel McHale, along with our creative team, [executive producers] Bob Fisher, Rob Greenberg, Dan Sterling and Tad Quill — not to mention a menagerie of wild animal method actors — have delivered a hilarious series that is sharp, witty, and warm, week after week.”
The single-camera comedy follows “a group of local Animal Control workers whose lives are complicated by the fact that animals are simple, but humans are not,” according to the official logline. McHale plays Frank, “an opinionated, eccentric Animal Control officer who may not have gone to college but is still the most well-read person in the room. A former cop, Frank tried to expose corruption in his department, but his efforts got him fired, which may explain why he’s so cynical and curmudgeonly. He has an almost superhuman ability to understand animals. Humans… not so much.”
Rounding out the ensemble are Michael Rowland (as Fred “Shred” Taylor), Vella Lovell (as Emily Price), Ravi Patel (as Amit Patel) and Grace Palmer (as Victoria Sands).
Fox previously handed renewals to 9-1-1: Lone Star (for Season 5), Accused (for Season 2), Alert: Missing Persons Unit (for Season 2), Bob’s Burgers (for Seasons 14 and 15), The Cleaning Lady (for Season 3), Family Guy (for Seasons 22 and 23), The Great North (for Season 4) and The Simpsons (for Seasons 35 and 36). Still awaiting word on its fate is fellow comedy Welcome to Flatch (which wrapped Season 2 in February).
Not returning to Fox for the 2023-24 broadcast season are 9-1-1 (which is moving to ABC for Season 7), Call Me Kat (cancelled after Season 3), Fantasy Island (cancelled after Season 2), Monarch (cancelled after Season 1) and The Resident (cancelled after Season 6).
TVLine’s Renewal Scorecard has been updated to reflect Animal Control‘s renewal. Are you looking forward to Season 2?
Glad for this I like the show but FOX dosent look strong ratings wise next season.
That gets renewed but not Fantasy Island? Sheesh.
Really? They renewed this over 9-1-1?
yes because one it’s cheapper and two it’s better
No way it’s better, but ok.
agree to disagree
I wouldn’t use better but different and it’s kind of refreshing from the norm emergencies shows that’s why I watch it
9-1-1 is just moving it ABC. Both networks (Fox and ABC) are owned by Disney. It wasn’t cancelled
*Moving TO
Fox isn’t owned by ABC
But it is owned by Disney, which is what he said.
Fox Broadcasting Company, the network, is not owned by either ABC or Disney. It’s still in the hands of the Fox Corporation, owned by the Murdochs. Animal Control is produced by Fox Entertainment, a Fox Corp-owned production company formed after the 20th Century Fox/Disney merger.
20th Century Fox Television, now simply 20th Television, is who produces 9-1-1 and *is* owned by Disney.
This is why, yeah, it makes more sense that Fox kept Animal Control, which they own, over the aging, expensive 9-1-1, which they license.
Disney does not own the Fox network. They own what used to be 20th Century Fox studio, but they legally wouldn’t be allowed to own ABC and Fox TV channels.
Fox Corporation which is what remained of Fox as a seperate company after Disney bought them owns it.
Fox channel in the US isn’t owned by Disney
It is amazing to me that after all of this time, that people don’t understand that. It isn’t that complicated, but a lot of people just can’t comprehend it. They just keep repeating their misinformed information.
It’s the same kind of lack of comprehension that allows people to claim, and even believe, that Peg Bundy is a Disney Princess. And yes, that’s a thing, I’ve seen it and the factual inaccuracy irks me to no end.
It’s moving to ABC.
I love Joel McHale, but I could barely watch the pilot for this one. Shocked it got another season.
We quit watching after the third poop joke in the pilot.
It is amazing to me that someone hasn’t decked Frank Shaw yet. Frank (Joel McHale) comes off as an obnoxious jerk, and his act wears thin. A little Frank goes a very long way.
.
Fox keeps this, but unloads Fantasy Island. SMDH.
I’m glad … and very, very surprised … that it was renewed. I think it’s a funny show with a good, charming cast. And it’s really the first show with McHale in it that I’ve truly liked his character.
It’s grown on me…glad for another season
All that’s left for me is holding out faint hope for Alaska Daily.
same here
Alaska Daily is wonderful
This show has been funny. I was worried the network wouldn’t give it time to marinate a bit. Next season will be better than the 1st season.
I like Joel McHale and Vella Lovell, but couldn’t even get through the first episode. Does it get better?
It absolutely improves over the course of the season. Happy it got picked up. I would like to see the same happen for Welcome to Flatch, but i’m not holding my breath. Happy for more Animal Control.
Does this announcement foreshadow Flatch getting another renewal?!
Fox renewed Animal Control and not call me kat. What bullcrap is that. 😡😡😡 Both shows are pretty much equal in the ratings
Call Me Kat lasted three seasons when it probably didn’t deserve (from a ratings standpoint) to be renewed after the first season. Be glad you got three seasons out of it.
Call Me Kat was a multi-cam, studio show filmed in Los Angeles. Animal Control is a single-cam show filmed in Vancouver, which makes it cheaper to produce.
And it’s probably why they had Fiona gableman as a guest star since the good doctor and animal control both shoot in Vancouver it was really easy for them to call her and say hey would you like to be one of the pet owners on our show and I knew who it was immidately when she was on as she had the same snark as Morgan in season 1 of the good doctor
Might I suggest blocking off 1.5hrs, eat a medicinal edible and/or take a few hits of medicinal herb or a vape and watch the 1st episode again, then the second. Maybe refuel along the way but I promise you there will be parts of episode 3 that will crack you up & then you’ll be hooked.
I too wasn’t interested much after watching 1st episode. Turned it off midway. Then I came back to it under different conditions & the rest is history.
I dont always take med before watching nor need to in order for this show to make me laugh! I just wish they’d renew it for a full 20-22 episode season next fall.
PS: Animal Control is a half hour comedy! Fantasy Island is an hour drama. Can’t compare them when it comes to what’s renewed & cancelled. C’mon that’s tv 101!
Call Me Kat was watchable, but not that good.
Animal Control is actually pretty funny.
This show became one of our favorites as the season went along. Glad it got a second season after a really good finale!!
It’s a pleasant enough show with a good cast. But I’d really like to see its time-slot predecessor, Welcome to Flatch, renewed. That is really a clever show.
I’m with you, Flatch is an under appreciated gem.
We’ve watched it on Hulu over and over again.
Brilliant!!
Such a hoot.
Almost, *almost* fills that nine-nine shaped void.
Yessss! You nailed it. It totally has the B99 vibe. I really enjoy this show. It has matured over time and the characters have found their groove.
I agree! You have to just go with the silliness, and not expect it to be any more realistic about an animal-control department than Brooklyn Nine-Nine was about a police department.
YESSSS! Absolutely loved this little shows,
Great news, I love this show! I didn’t expect to like it but it is funny and offbeat.
one of the best comedy this year ,refreshing
ghosts go no where also young sheldon become boring (no new jokes) ,not dead yet is not funny yet.
night court is full of old knock knock jokes
abbott e has too soft jokes not to hurt anyone
LOL this crap
Over kat and fantasy island. Well this will end with season 2 as well anyway so enjoy!
A very quirky but funny new show. All the characters mesh well with each other. Very happy for the renewal!
🥳👏
A donkey show renewed but a fantasy show canceled Fox Booooooo
Ugh.
