The following contains spoilers from Young Sheldon‘s Season 6 finale.
The Big Bang Theory didn’t exactly prepare us for Young Sheldon‘s latest twist.
As expected, Thursday’s hour-long finale culminated in a natural disaster. Sheldon and Mary’s flight to Germany took off before a tornado touched down in Medford, forcing the rest of the Cooper/McAllister clan to hunker down and take cover.
The storm was alluded to in a Season 1 episode of Big Bang, when Sheldon told Penny about his stint in Heidelberg. At the time, he said that his mother flew back to Texas to help his dad after their house slipped off cinderblocks. “It was tornado season, and it was an aluminum house,” he explained. But clearly Sheldon’s memory was a bit fuzzy, because it wasn’t his childhood home that suffered the brunt of the damage.
Once it was safe to leave the laundromat, Meemaw returned home to discover that her house had been decimated. Heartbreaking, right? As the hour drew to a close, George extended an invite to his mother-in-law and Mandy to come stay with him and Missy — at least for the duration of Sheldon and Mary’s time abroad.
Thursday’s finale also featured a major Georgie-and-Mandy development: On the drive back from their not-so-romantic spa getaway, Mandy proposed to Georgie! Well, it wasn’t so much a proposal as it was Mandy telling Georgie that they should get married. “You think I’m not ‘all in,’ but I am,” she assured him. Shortly thereafter, Meemaw loaned Georgie the money for an engagement ring — an engagement ring they’ll probably have to pawn to help get Meemaw back on her feet in Season 7.

Interesting choice. But unnecessary, imo. I’m sure Sheldon would have been majorly affected by that, and one of his many MeeMaw mentions would have at least alluded to it. Minor damage to Sheldon’s house would have been more in line with the narrative, and this show has enough going for it it did not need to throw that into the mix too. The “Mary’s house looks fine” line also threw me a little…isn’t her house across the street, rather than down the street? How would she have seen Mary’s house before what was left of her own? (Pedantic, I know, but kind of not, b/c it goes back to how the house totaling was an interesting but unnecessary choice.)

Makes me want a segue from Young Sheldon to The Coopers even more though. Let Sheldon go to Cal Tech, but leave the show in Texas. Sheldon can still be involved with weekly call ins, and we can keep on watching the rest of the family for a few more years.
An extension or spin-off can be called, ‘Young Missy’
I was thinking Young CeCe, but Young Missy could work too…only CeCe’s going to be younger for longer. ;)
I hadn’t seen any spoilers so I wasn’t expecting this. The thing I think is the most different between what BBT told us and what happens on Young Sheldon is Sheldon’s relationship with Mee Maw. Since she broke up with Dr. Sturgis, they are hardly in any scenes together at all. Tonight was the first time she has called him Moon Pie in years. They have definitely changed that part of Sheldon’s memories.
This show gave up on TBBT years ago. Honestly, a lot of Sheldon’s talk of his childhood happened years before they even discussed the spin-off. Why tie yourself to bad narratives to appease a canon that was never intended to be televised. Just drop a line about this being an alternate universe and cut ties with TBBT all together.
So, just completely cheat on the premise they sold the audience on.
The delivered for the most part. You saw Sheldon Cooper become Sheldon Cooper. Adding a failed project here or a friendship with Billy Sparks there doesn’t betray the premise. Likewise having the show make good decisions for the story they want to tell instead of handcuffing themselves to the motherships throw away lines is not betraying the premise. In fact TBBT had plenty of contradictions and retcons. End of the day Young Sheldon is a commodity that needs to sell itself to survive in a crowded market. If George cheating on Mary is good for that then do it. If not, it would be silly to do it just to be faithful to TBBT.
Totally agree, Jeff!
This show continues to be the best comedy on TV. Appreciate all the character development this season. Looking forward to next year.
Totally agree! Best sitcom on TV by far.
Excellent episode. I’m fine with chalking Sheldon up as an unreliable narrator. Lance Barber and Raegan Revord should be candidates for Performances of the Week.
There is an episode of TBBT where Georgie basically calls out Sheldon for his skewed memories of his childhood. They’re specifically talking about the fallout from George Sr.’s death, but also about how Mary and Connie only told Sheldon what they felt he could handle. From that perspective, I think Sheldon’s memory of the tornado is consistent by being out of synch with the reality of how bad the storm hit his family.
Exactly. I thought that would be obvious. Sheldon is in Germany for months. They might not have told him about Meemaw’s house at all. He may have found out as an adult after TBBT ended. He didn’t witness the destruction so he could only go by what he was told at the time and what he was told when he got older.
This is also my thought that they didn’t say Sheldon about Meemaw’s house because they didn’t want to drive him crazy, and so he could only say what was told. Makes sense for me.
I like this show, and it may be
better without Sheldon if he goes to Cal Tech. Don’t kill off the Dad. Let’s see how things go for a few years.
Agree with you don’t kill off george
Let Sheldon stay in Germany. The character has gotten so annoying this season I need the summer off.
I agree, keep George
I sure wish the comparison between TBBT and YS would just stop altogether.
When you create a prequel, the comparisons are inevitable. Sheldon Cooper himself would do no less.
I totally agree.
Presumably Sheldon’s time in Germany will be a couple of months – plenty of time for more tornadoes (it is the south in spring/summer, after all).
Sheldon is annoying as F. I’d rather watch Georgie, Missy and Connie every week
Decimate means reduced by 10 percent. Her house was destroyed!
The definition of decimate: “kill, destroy, or remove a large percentage or part of.”
Where are my TVLine Points, Matt?
I enjoy this show and look forward to however it unfolds.
However, TBBT is my mothership. I will never stop enjoying the reruns.
I also look forward to the premise of a sequel to TBBT.
This has been a strong season. I like the addition of Georgies GF.
Great finale. Did not see the ending coming at all and my mouth fell open when they showed MeeMaw’s house. i assumed it would be the Cooper home that was damaged.
I love this show and I would love it if they spun off The Coopers and kept it going.
Nothing against the actor who plays him(he’s great) but Sheldon is my least favorite character on the show.
If you remember, an entire season of “Dallas” was Pam’s dream (Bobby’s death, etc.). Artistic license is allowed in television…
In Sheldon’s wedding Georgie is there. But no mention of Mandy or his daughter..you need to explain this!
I absolutely loved the way George protected his daughter during the tornado! It was a breathtaking bonding scene. I loved that Georgie surprised Mandy with a beautiful ring. I loved how the preacher pitched in to help Meemaw clean up after her house was destroyed. Enjoyed Sheldon’s jet ride to Germany!
I thought the dramatic post tornado scene with Missy and her Dad was truly emotional and showed the skills of these two actors. The love between Father and Daughter , though sometime very rocky shown brightly after Dad possibly saved Missy’s life.
The father-daughter scenes were the best part of the episode, and don’t even get a mention in this story.

Love the show but am tired of Sheldon character.
While Armitage plays the character perfectly, I no longer like the Shelfon character. I felt the same about BBT after many years. Missy is adorable.
Georgie is great .
Big fan of Annie Potts.
Sorry, thats just me ….
Let Young Sheldon stand on its own. TBBT is not a bible – Let It Go !
Thought it was good with a little bit of everyone & for everyone. I loved Missy’s reaction to seeing the family car turned over in the tornado & she and dad together. I would like to have seen more positive reactions between Missy & Sheldon regarding Sheldon’s going away. Maybe I missed a discussion between them in earlier episodes, but they have have supported each other in previous situations & to me Missy’s reactions were a bit too negative., although somewhat understood.
Not the usual type of episode for Young Sheldon, and I think that added to the quality of the episode. Some seriousness in the middle of a comedic episode adds more “umph” to the episode.
PUT IN SPOILER ALERTS.
